Song Translation

When I took Latin in high school, one of our projects was to translate a song into Latin. I did "Moon Over Bourbon Street" by Sting because I thought it was horribly amusing. I was, and still am, rather pleased by the result!

Luna Supra Bourbon Via

Ibi est lunam supra Bourbon Via haec nox
Video facies tam transgedi sub pallida lux lucarrae
Habeo non delectus sed sequi ille vox
Clarus lucis, populus, luna et omnis.
Precor quique dies esse validus
Enim scio quid oporet sum erro

{Chorus}
Videtis non me umbram
vel auditas sonus me pedes
Dum ibi lunam supra Bourbon Via

Erat multi anni abhinc ille fieri quid sum
Capiebam in haec vita similis integer agnus
Nunc possum non osendo me facies tum meridies
Et solum videtis ambulo abs lux luna
Margo me petaso abdat oculi bestia
Habeo facies unus quo delinquo, sed manu sacredos.

{Chorus}

Ambulat omni dies per viae New Orleana
Est integer et paravulus ab familiae divitae
Steteram muti tempori foras haec fenestra tum nox
Contendere cum me imbutus in pallied lux luna
Quomodum sum ego haec ita quando precorere Deus supra?
Oporet amo quid perdo, et perdo res amo!

{Chorus}

-Sting, Somnium Turturibus Caeruleas

Moon Over Bourbon Street

There's a moon over Bourbon Street tonight
I see faces as they pass beneathe the pale lamplight
I've no choice but to follow that call
The bright lights, the people, and the moon and all
I pray everyday to be strong
For I know what I do must be wrong

{Chorus}
Oh, you'll never see my shade
Or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over Bourbon Street

It was many years ago that I became what I am
I was trapped in the life like an innocent lamb
Now I can never show my face at noon
And you'll only see me walking by the light of the moon
The brim of my hat hides the eye of a beast
I've the face of a sinner, but the hands of a priest

{Chorus}

She walks everyday through the streets of New Orleans
She's innocent and young, from a family of means
I've stood, many times, by her window at night
To struggle with my instincts in the pale moonlight
How could I be this way, when I pray to God above?
I must love I destroy, and destroy the thing I love!

{Chorus}

-Sting, Dream of The Blue Turtles

A thought on vampires..

The subject of vampires has always been a vague one, surrounded by the mist of often cruel and bloody superstitions. In each one of us, we hold the image that authors, such as Bramn Stoker, have ingrained upon us whenever we hear the terrible name of Dracula. Nosferatu and vampire have the same effect, more or less.

Perhaps humanity has been to harsh on vampires. We never gave them a chance to be people. We simply threw into the shadows of the night like garbage and gave them the label of monster.

Was this fair? Today's movies portray vampires as seducers, murderers, and profaners of the dead and living both. Stoker went as far to claim a vampire's only goal is to steal from the living what the living hold dearest, whether it be love or blood.

Modern movie makers have made Stoker's illusions become reality on the silver screen. The latest of movies carrying the name of Dracula shows Dracula molesting poor innocent (yet voluptuous) Lucy and later forcing an affair with the not-so-unwilling Mina, but it was still all his fault. Somehow. Figure that one out for yourself.

Does Hollywood want us to believe that vampires are the only marital-breaking, sinning, unlawful persons in the world? Surely not. Then why do they always force the image upon vampires as such?

I am not saying that all writers are making vampires appear as monsters. Some do vampires justice in their novels or short stories and should be celebrated for breaking the status quo. These few people are growing in number, as the public is slowing coming to realize that not all vampires are evil and seductive.

After reading what I have written above, one might come to the conclusion that I believe in the existence of vampires, which might make one wonder if my sanity is intact (Not that it matters). In today's world, it is widely accepted that vampires are objects of folklore used to frighten young children, sometimes into obedience in the Slavic countries.

Not that I'm saying I entirely rule out the existence of vampires. That would be foolish and naive.

Somewhere, in another time, in another world, in another dimension---well---you never know.

It could happen.
