Kathy Armstrong is a performer and educator who shares her passion for African music with many people. Since 1984 she has studied, performed and taught the music and dance of Ghana, West Africa.
Kathy trained as a percussionist at the University of Toronto where she received her Bachelor and Master's degrees in music, with as emphasis on multicultural education.
She has travelled extensively in East and West Africa, including periods of intense study in Ghana, with master drummers and dancers. Under the guidance of her principal teacher, Fred Kwasi Dunyo, Kathy has given many workshops and performances throughout North America. While in Toronto, she directed the University of Toronto West African Ensemble and performed with Flaming Dono Drum and Dance Ensemble.
Kathy has extensive
experience teaching students from pre-school to University level, as well
as professional educators. She is also the director of the Baobab Young
Performers, which provides students aged 12-16 with a unique opportunity
to learn and perform the traditional music and dance of West Africa.
