Salamander brings theatre and drama in education to young audiences through-out Ontario and Québec. The company offers performances and workshops in schools at all levels and performances for the elementary panel. Holiday workshops, public performances and artists' residencies can also be arranged. The following are programs currently available to schools for the 98-99 season.

PERFORMANCES
 


Excalibur
Excalibur tells the tale of King Arthur and of a time when men lived and died by the code of the sword. Children have always taken comfort in the heroic ideal; here we go beyond Xena and Power Rangers to our cultural heritage. Salamander's unique style blends shadow puppetry, stunning vocal music with strong dramatic content.

Available December 7-18.

A World of Stories
The audience is invited to explore other cultures in a exciting mix of seven stories from around the world. The show features, puppetry, mime, masks, music and dance. A World of Stories is based on "South & North, East & West" published by Oxfam UK. Available May 10 - 21.

WORKSHOPS

Playmaking / Jouons ensemble (English / French Immersion)
Two Salamander animators introduce your class to the joy of play creation, using a secret formula which (once we share the secret) builds a play worth watching every time.

Shadow Play / Jeu d'ombres (English / French Immersion)
Using found materials, light and shadow, vocal characterization and everyone's imagination, students and teachers are introduced to the creative possibilities of the shadow box theatre. Participants will build a shadow theatre, develop a short play inspired by legends of King Arthur and learn a variety of skills for on-going drama activities.

Time Travel / Passé au présent (English / French Immersion)
Explore local history through drama. Students can become navigators, pioneers, canal builders and take other important historical roles as they explore the dreams and struggles which built our country.

Simply Shakespeare
Give your students an actor's introduction to the Bard. Become text detectives and learn to decode and relish the sweep of Shakespeare's language. The goal is a comfort with the mechanics of blank verse which allows children to enjoy speaking the text.

Calling the Shots
Put your students behind the camera for a crash course in movie-making. Doing leads to an understanding of decisions and their power to shape our world through video imagery (School to supply video camera).

Hero Talk
The Beowulf story and rhyming dialogue, a dynamite combination to help your students define what makes a hero!
