David Vs Goliath, an Unauthorized Autobiography
Welcome to my web-site. My name is Jan R. Groenewold, and I am the author of David Vs Goliath. After working for the Walgreen Company for almost twenty-one years, I eventually decided to leave the Company after a cursory remark was taken as a threat by my immediate supervisor (pharmacy manager). The book is my account of the ensuing struggle between myself (a self-proclaimed "David") and Walgreen's uncaring bureaucracy ("Goliath"). I'm sure many others have been drawn into similar situations, but never wrote about them for fear of reprisal or embarrassment. Although I knew that many readers would not agree with my point of view, I felt compelled to write anyway and take my chances. David Vs Goliath was written for an audience of pharmacists, to provide insight about the Walgreen Company, but it has lessons for us all without regard to occupation, or position in the business hierarchy. Hopefully my sense of humor will bring a chuckle to the reader. The most frequent comment about the book was that it made the reader laugh. There was, however, a dark side to my writing style, that dimly reflected the inner turmoil brought on by the stress of the job and my dealings with Walgreens‘ management. As you shall see, the Walgreen Company failed not only to reduce stress in the workplace, but also added to it by avoiding the problems that they themselves had caused. The lack of concern and lack of respect shown to me by Walgreens‘ was eventually overshadowed by their desire to fire me or force me to leave. Whether their motives had to do with my age, my affiliation with the union, or some perceived attitude that I no longer cared about my work, I guess no one but Walgreens will ever know. All in all I’ve enjoyed my life. Get your hands on a copy so that you may enjoy it too! Lastly, I would like to leave all you mothers out there with one final thought. Don’t let your babies grow up to be pharmacists! |

This picture was chosen for the back cover because I seldom had time to urinate when working for Walgreens. Ah, the simple pleasures in life...
