It wasn't much later when a loud voice stopped ChilHyun.
"Hey you!"
ChilHyun froze, but didn't dare turn around,
"You need a ride?" the gruff voice asked, this time in a friendly tone.
ChilHyun looked back and squinted into the blinding head lights of a truck.
"Are you dumb? I asked you if you needed a ride! Where are you heading?" , the man sitting at the steering wheel motioned ChilHyun to the back of the truck.
ChilHyun nodded gratefully and jumped in the open trunk. The heavy bag fell to the floor as he sat down.
"Where you going?" the man asked again.
"Somewhere else. Just get me to wherever you're going." ChilHyun answered tiredly and closed his eyes.
ChilHyun blinked numbly into the afternoon sky as the truck man shook him awake.
"Hey~boy! Get up! This is as far as I go--!" ChilHyun stood up and jumped out of the truck.
"Where are we?" He asked looking around him.
"Seoul. That's pretty much as far as you can get from Pusan in a night. Who are you anyway?" The truck man looked suspiciously at the bulging bag that ChilHyun carried.
"I'm a runaway. I'm a coward." ChilHyun pulled his cap down farther over his eyes as he thanked the driver and walked away.
"Hey you! You need some help? Did you run away from home? You're a student aren't you? Maybe I should turn you over to the cops." the truck man grabbed ChilHyun's sleeve and glared down at him.
ChilHyun yanked away. "Thanks for bringing me here. Now forget about me." He ran off before the truck man could stop him.
The busy streets of Seoul overwhelmed ChilHyun as he looked about him with awed eyes. The little town on the outskirts of Pusan, so small that it wasn't even on the maps, had been his home for all of his 18 years. He had only heard about the capital of Korea, Seoul, and had always dreamed of coming here. Of course, he had planned it so differently, but he was here, wasn't he?
ChilHyun wandered aimlessly around the confusing city, worrying for the first time about what he was going to do here. He thought once of going back, but immediately threw away the idea. ChilHyun bit his lip.
He'd have to do something, because he could never ever go back. Not now...not after he had fled in fear. Not after...ChilHyun pulled a heart shaped stone from the back pocket of his bag. He fingered the smooth rock as he fought the tears that threatened to fall.
ChilHyun rushed toward a nearby restaurant. He hadn't had a single meal since yesterday's lunch, and he was starved.
The waitress stared as ChilHyun finished a second pan of pizza by himself.
ChilHyun had always eaten more than a lot, but always seemed to stay thin. Maybe it was due to the steady dance practices after school, or maybe it was a natural thing. But ChilHyun had always easily inhaled a whole pizza, and in his hunger, two wasn't a problem.
ChilHyun picked up his bag and walked his way to the counter. He pulled a well-filled wallet from his pocket and carelessly took out a few bills and handed them to the cashier. He collected his change and walked out happily, not noticing a few boys glaring after him.
Dark fell again, but the streets only grew busier with cars and people. ChilHyun decided he'd have to find some kind of inn to spend the night in. He turned into a narrow alley.
A snarling laugh made him whip around to find 6 tall boys blocking the way back into the street. ChilHyun's eyes filled with fear.
"Hey~what're you staring at?" One boy stepped toward ChilHyun. He smirked and grabbed ChilHyun's chin.
"Pretty face you've got there...eh? You a girl?" The boy laughed and the others laughed along loudly.
ChilHyun blushed hotly. The thing he hated most was to be called a girl. His hands slowly clenched into two fists.
"We don't want to mess with your fine face, so turn in your wallet and bag, and everything will be fine." The boy stuck his hands into his pockets and grinned.
ChilHyun backed away, his hands holding the bag tightly.
"Hey! Didn't you hear what he said? Give us your wallet!" Another boy spoke impatiently.
ChilHyun shook his head. "Please. This is all I have. I need this to..." Before he had a chance to finish, a fist jammed into his stomach.
ChilHyun gasped for breath as he looked up at the first boy.
"We asked nicely once. I'm giving you one last chance. Hand them over." The boy growled.
ChilHyun didn't move.
The boy's knee kicked up into ChilHyun's chest this time. "You son of a bitch! Give me your god damn wallet!" He yelled.
ChilHyun felt a sharp pain when he breathed in, but ignored it. "NO! I can't. Please...let me go just this once."
The boys jeered at ChilHyun as they moved closer to him. "You're one brave @#%@#, but you're stupid as a baby. Don't make us mad. We're not used to being forgiving."
ChilHyun shook his head again. "Please..." he started to beg.
Before he could go on, he felt a sharp blow on his face and chin. He reeled back to feel a kick in his back and another fist fly to his stomach.
ChilHyun's hand unconsciously covered his back pocket, that contained his wallet. His fingers gripped tightly around the strap of his bag. He couldn't let go. His whole life was in it. His hand gripped the stone. The stone she had given him.
Screams and fists filled the air around him and ChilHyun could feel a sharp pain run through his whole body. A kick sent him smashing down onto the floor and a foot stepped into his stomach, nearly stopping his breath. Before ChilHyun could recover, a hand grabbed his collar, pulling him up and immediately a knee kicked twice into his chest. Blood pore from ChilHyun's mouth and he felt a unstandable ache in his chest.
The hitting stopped for a second as one of the boys tried to pry the wallet and bag from ChilHyun's hand. But ChilHyun only gripped tighter.
"You no good bastard! You still need more?" A fist rammed into his chin again, filling his mouth with blood. ChilHyun spit out, unfortunately, in one of the boys' eyes. The rage in his eyes made ChilHyun shrink back, but his stomach was punched and before he could cry out, a kick sent him down on the floor, again.
ChilHyun looked up pleadingly, but the cold eyes that stared down at him were cruel. Unmercifully, feet trampled over ChilHyun, ignoring his screams.
When ChilHyun still didn't give up his wallet, the leader motioned for them to stop. ChilHyun lay gasping for breath on the ground, his lip all busted and his eye swollen. With one swift movement, the boy grabbed ChilHyun's hair and pulled him up.
"You still haven't had enough? You're tougher than you look~ But my boys here, they liked the look of that wallet, you see. We're not giving up till we get it." The boy's hot breath snarled into ChilHyun's ear. A moment later, ChilHyun's head smashed into a steel pipe.
ChilHyun slumped to the ground weakly. He felt his hands being opened, but couldn't stop them. Breathing was hard enough, for the pain in his chest was so sharp that he couldn't even scream. ChilHyun felt the world spin around him and his head hurt like hell. He felt the boys kicking him as they passed by, satisfied with the fight and the reward. His eyes began to close and the dull pain in his head got stronger. He heard voices yell around him and tried desperately to open his eyes. But the strong light blinded him and suddenly the world turned black.
"Hey~hey...get up, will you?" ChilHyun heard a voice calling him. He tried to open his eyes.
"Hey! Are you awake? Do you feel all right? WooHyuk! He's up!" ChilHyun blinked and tried to get up, but fell back moaning in pain. The round pair of eyes looked worriedly down at him.
"Are you OK? You've gotten beaten pretty bad. Can you move?" Tony asked ChilHyun.
ChilHyun bit his lip and tried once again to lift his body. This time, the pain in his back was less, and he was able to sit up in the bed.
Tony smiled brightly. "Good. Damn! I thought you were dying, man! You've been sleeping for 2 days straight!"
ChilHyun held his aching head in his hands. Why was it pounding so bad?
"What's your name?" Tony asked.
ChilHyun looked up at him blankly.
"Who are you?" Tony asked again.
ChilHyun stared, and slowly shook his head.
Tony's eyes grew big as WooHyuk came up to the bed.
"You! Do you know who you are? Where you live?" WooHyuk asked urgently.
ChilHyun opened his parched lips. "Who are you~? Where am I~? Who... am I?" He asked in a cracked voice.
"No~!!" Tony groaned and exchanged a glance with WooHyuk.
"Water...please..." ChilHyun gasped, and WooHyuk ran to get a cup.
After gulping down the whole glass, ChilHyun sank into the pillows and closed his eyes. His head hurt so much.
As ChilHyun fell back into sleep, WooHyuk and Tony stared down at him.
"Argh! What are we going to do with him?" Tony cried.
"It's definitely memory loss. This is serious. We can't just send him out in the streets again or something! He'll just have to stay with us until he remembers something...anything!" WooHyuk answered with a sigh.
"I guess you're right. But...how the hell did he end up in our hands?" Tony groaned as he pulled the blanket tightly around ChilHyun's shoulders.
"Stop whining Tony. You know you're glad you can take care of someone besides me. And someone who doesn't even push you away!" WooHyuk smiled as Tony wiped ChilHyun's warm face with a wet cloth.
"Ha ha...So I like protecting and caring for people...so what?" Tony pretended to fake a punch at WooHyuk's arm.
"So you should have been a nurse. Or a mom." WooHyuk laughed at the thought of Tony in a nurses' uniform.
"Shut up." Tony turned his back on WooHyuk.
"You're the one who started it." WooHyuk smiled.
A soft hand woke ChilHyun the next morning. ChilHyun squinted into the morning sun that shone through the apartment window. He lifted his head to look at the person next to him.
Tony smiled. "Do you feel better now? You've been pretty out of it for the last few days."
ChilHyun nodded and tried to sit up. Apart from the dizzy ache in his head, he felt better...but better than what? ChilHyun frowned up at Tony.
"Do you remember anything? At all?" Tony peered anxiously in ChilHyun's face.
"I...I...no...my head hurts when..." ChilHyun's frown grew darker as the pounding in his head got stronger. He moaned as he covered it with his arms.
"Don't try if it hurts you. We...me and WooHyuk...found you in the alley near our house. You were busted pretty bad, no doubt one of those silly street gangs, no id, no name, no nothing. We brought you here to our house, and you've practically been in a coma the last few days! We almost gave up on you~." Tony's fast voice only made ChilHyun's head swirl.
"Thank...you...I'm sorry." ChilHyun spoke in short gasps.
"Don't worry about it! We couldn't just leave you there, now could we!...But don't you have a home? a name?" Tony asked once again.
ChilHyun shook his head. "I...don't...know...I can't...remember..."
Tony sighed. "That's all right. We'll take care of you for the time being. Are you hungry? You want something to eat?" He got up and moved toward the refrigerator. ChilHyun nodded enthusiastically.
"There you go!" Tony spread a nice simple meal in front of ChilHyun's hungry eyes. "We don't have much right now. WooHyuk's gone shopping."
ChilHyun didn't hear him as he started shoveling down the food. The twisted pain in his belly slowly relaxed and the headache seemed to disappear.
Tony smiled as he watched ChilHyun eat. He had been worried about ChilHyun, and it was a relief to see him sit up and swallow food. Even if he didn't remember anything about himself.
The door slammed as WooHyuk walked in. Seeing ChilHyun, his face broke into a big smile.
"Hey! He's awake!" WooHyuk exclaimed as the groceries dropped on the counter.
"Yeah. Hey...uhm...you~ This is WooHyuk. Did I tell you my name? I'm Tony." Tony looked over at ChilHyun.
ChilHyun nodded and smiled. "WooHyuk? Tony? Hi."
WooHyuk glanced nervously at Tony. Tony shook his head slightly.
"So...what do they call you?" WooHyuk smiled brightly as he sat across from ChilHyun. ChilHyun shook his head bewilderedly.
"I don't know. I can't seem to remember anything, at all. I'm sorry." He hung his head as he tried desperately to think of something.
"No. That's OK." WooHyuk's white smile made ChilHyun feel more relaxed.
"Do...am I suppose to know you?" He asked cautiously.
"Oh. No...we found you in the alley. Man! You were a mess! Can't you use your fists? Those street gangs aren't anything!" WooHyuk laughed.
"Oh yeah! Hey~ We found this in your hand." Tony held out a small white stone. "You were holding on to it so hard that we barely got it out. Does this bring back anything?"
ChilHyun shook his head and bit his lip. His mind was blank.
"You can stay with us for a while. Until you remember where you belong. Don't worry about anything." Tony patted ChilHyun's shoulder.
ChilHyun nodded gratefully. Until he remembered....
"Ring Ring~!"
The telephone interrupted the three in a lively conversation five days later. ChilHyun's body had almost completely healed, though his memory was still as black as ever. Tony and WooHyuk were friendly, kind people and they were soon all very close.
WooHyuk stopped laughing long enough to answer the phone. But as he listened to the voice coming through the receiver, his face turned serious.
"Yes." "Yes." "We'll be there." WooHyuk set the phone down and looked up at Tony. Tony nodded and looked down at ChilHyun.
"Uhm...? We've...hey WooHyuk? Why don't we take him with us?" Tony asked.
WooHyuk hesitated a moment as he gave ChilHyun a look over. ChilHyun's scared eyes melted his heart in a second as he nodded.
A few minutes later, Tony and ChilHyun were sitting in the back of WooHyuk's car. Tony and WooHyuk were decked out in dark suits, pants perfectly creased and shirts brilliantly white. Sunglasses shaded their eyes and a grave expression covered their faces. ChilHyun squirmed uncomfortably. Tony smiled.
"Sorry we couldn't do anything about your clothes. All our other suits are at the cleaners. But your face does enough." Tony winked at ChilHyun. ChilHyun was dressed in one of WooHyuk's black hiphop pants and a white blouse shirt. He was a shocking contrast to the formal Tony and WooHyuk.
"Where are we going?" ChilHyun asked.
Tony's face suddenly turned strict. "You'll see." He answered shortly in a tone that ChilHyun didn't dare answer back to.
In thirty minutes, WooHyuk stopped the car. They were in front of a tall building miles away from the nearest city. The door to the car was opened by a few men dressed like Tony and WooHyuk, and the three stepped out. Tony and WooHyuk nodded to the men who bowed down low to them as ChilHyun followed them timidly into the building.
Only a dim light dared to peek into the darkened hall as the three headed inward. On either side was a long line of men dressed in black suits bowing so low that their heads almost touched their knees. WooHyuk and Tony walked on without noticing, but ChilHyun looked around him with awed eyes. This was like something out of the movies! He hesitated a little, staring at the bowed heads when a sharp look from Tony sent him scurrying after them.
ChilHyun followed them onto an elevator. As the elevator started to the top 10th floor, Tony cleared his throat.
"Uhm...you...don't talk. Whatever you do, just stay still!" Tony's eyes demanded as he spoke.
ChilHyun nodded. "Where are we?" He started to ask.
"Hush!" WooHyuk warned as the door to the elevator opened.
A shrill voice reached their ears as they stepped out of the elevator.
"It's been almost an hour since we called for you! Get the hell over here!" ChilHyun looked up to see a very tall, pale guy screaming at Tony and WooHyuk.
The two bowed down low murmuring apologizes.
JaeWon suddenly noticed ChilHyun standing behind the two.
"YOU! Who are you? Who dared to bring a trespasser in..." The shrill voice started, but WooHyuk stepped in.
"He's a boy we picked up sir. He won't talk." JaeWon hesitated a moment and eventually opened the huge double doors behind him.
WooHyuk and Tony bowed their heads as they walked in, and Tony motioned for ChilHyun to follow. JaeWon ran ahead and reached the dark oak desk before anyone else.
"Sir! They're here." He spoke heavily to a dark figure at the window.
The figure stood up and walked toward Tony and WooHyuk. He lifted his head and ChilHyun gasped noiselessly in surprise. He had expected an old, at least, middle-aged man to be the leader of such group, but here he was staring at a young face...practically a boy!
"Sir." WooHyuk and Tony bowed down to the dark man.
"Thank you for coming." HeeJun's deep voice spoke softly. His big eyes turned toward ChilHyun. At his inquisitive expression, JaeWon jumped in.
"Those two brought him with them. We had no warning of anyone else, let me assure you Mr.HeeJun...." HeeJun silenced JaeWon with a wave of his hand and walked toward ChilHyun.
"We found him almost dying near our apartment, sir. He seemed to have been caught by a few street kids. They weren't easy on him, and he hurt his head. He can't remember anything." Tony explained hurriedly.
HeeJun reached out and lifted ChilHyun's chin with his hand. ChilHyun shook with fear as he tried to back away. But his feet seemed to be glued to the ground in his fright. HeeJun smiled.
"He has a pretty face. Very handsome. Like a sculpture. What's your name?" HeeJun's rich voice was kind.
ChilHyun shook his head. "I don't know...sir. I don't remember anything." He croaked out.
HeeJun nodded and his big eyes filled with sympathy. "Look up!" He demanded, and ChilHyun dared to look into HeeJun's eyes.
"I like you. I like the looks of you. I like boys with pretty faces. Like yours. I'm HeeJun. Don't be scared. No one will hurt you. So you lost all memory?" HeeJun asked.
"Yes. It seems so." ChilHyun answered in a shaking voice.
"Tony! WooHyuk!" HeeJun raised his voice ever so slightly as he called the two names.
Tony and WooHyuk were by him in a second. "Yes sir!" They spoke in unison.
"What do you call him..?" HeeJun asked looking at ChilHyun.
"Uhm...he doesn't know his name~" WooHyuk stammered.
HeeJun frowned slightly. "What do you call him..?" He asked again in a tight voice.
"We don't use a name, sir." Tony answered bowing his head.
HeeJun nodded as he looked into ChilHyun's eyes. "You fight good?"
ChilHyun shook his head. "I..I don't know." He answered quaveringly.
"He was a mess when we found him, sir. He didn't seem to be a fighter." Tony offered. HeeJun ignored him and put his arm around ChilHyun.
"I'm going to name you." He announced in a deep voice. WooHyuk and Tony exchanged surprised looks and JaeWon jumped forward.
"HeeJun! We don't know anything about this boy! For all we know..." His shrill voice screamed. HeeJun shot a look at the red faced JaeWon, who pressed his lips together and became quiet.
"Call all the boys" HeeJun spoke quietly.
JaeWon nodded without a word and walked out the double doors. WooHyuk and Tony hesitated and followed him, after bowing lowly to HeeJun.
ChilHyun looked frightened as HeeJun walked slowly to the window and took out a cigar. He looked nervously toward the closing double doors.
HeeJun inhaled deeply and let out a cloudy haze of smoke. ChilHyun stared at him.
HeeJun laughed. "Are you scared of me? Relax. I just liked your eyes. Don't be frightened. I don't usually take orphans from nowhere, but I'm making an exception. Did you see how JaeWon reacted?" HeeJun laughed again. "You'll have it easy with us. Has Tony and WooHyuk told you about me? No? Well...we are the top of Seoul, basically. Everyone dances to our hands...especially mine. You'll get the best treatment since I took fancy of you."
ChilHyun relaxed a little at the warm smile HeeJun gave him.
"Can...I ask you...a question?" ChilHyun's voice trembled slightly.
HeeJun laughed and nodded.
"How...old are you?" ChilHyun peered into HeeJun's face.
For a second, HeeJun stared dumbfounded at ChilHyun. No one, besides JaeWon, ever EVER asked him a personal question. But then he broke into a hearty laugh.
"I'm twenty-two. I'm young, right? Too young to be so high, some people say. But I worked my way up, with my bare hands. No one helped me. I don't have a single uncle or relative here...I don't have the 'background' that is usually required. But I got lucky. The former boss...he helped me out at a hard time. Like I'm going to help you." HeeJun smiled at ChilHyun again. ChilHyun didn't know that he was hearing something even JaeWon didn't know for sure.
ChilHyun continued to stare at HeeJun. He seemed vaguely familiar. His eyes...he knew them!...but he didn't.
HeeJun turned to see ChilHyun's puzzled face. "Is something wrong?"
"I...I..seem to remember your eyes from...oh my head!" ChilHyun gasped as he caught up his head in his hands. The old pounding was starting again.
HeeJun hurried over to ChilHyun. "Don't try to think just yet. Memory loss is usually a temporary thing, but if you try too hard, it'll be permanent. Be careful." HeeJun's steady hands helped ChilHyun into a chair.
ChilHyun gasped for breath and slowly the pounding got fainter. He took a deep breath.
Suddenly the double doors flew open. WooHyuk bowed to HeeJun. "They're waiting sir."
HeeJun nodded and helped ChilHyun up.
They walked to the ground floor, ChilHyun with HeeJun in front, and WooHyuk in the back. When they reached the 1st floor, a few men opened two iron doors in the back. HeeJun walked in, motioning for ChilHyun to follow.
ChilHyun followed HeeJun closely down the stairs, and found himself in a enormous hall. It was 10 times bigger than the building itself, so it must have been the basement. And it was packed with thousands of men in dark suits. In unison, the men bowed low to HeeJun. HeeJun nodded and worked his way to the front where JaeWon and Tony, and now WooHyuk stood waiting.
HeeJun put his arm around ChilHyun's shaking shoulders.
"Here is H.O.T, the most powerful underground gang in all of Seoul." He laughed spreading his hands toward the bowed heads.
HeeJun motioned for all of them to look up. He cleared his throat.
"This is KangTa. He's the newest member of our family. I don't want any of that new enterance fights or junk. No one is to lay a finger on him or say a harmful word about him. Anyone who does pays to me. Understand?"
"YES!" An amazing sound rang on the walls that scared ChilHyun...no, now KangTa. He started to sweat nervously.
"Wow!" Tony exclaimed out loud as soon as the 'headquarters' turned out of sight. Tony beamed at the still dazed Chil...no, KangTa and WooHyuk grinned through the rearview mirror.
"You are one lucky guy~ Man! I haven't seen HeeJun take to someone so quickly and so completely in all my days!" Tony exclaimed excitedly.
"Tony's right. HeeJun's really moody and distant most of the time, and he rarely even smiles! To strangers he's a terror. He never takes in anyone before sending boys to find out about the person. And he never ever makes quick decisions. His announcement to adopt you probably shocked the whole gang, though they didn't show it. You'll have it easy, as long as you're not cocky." WooHyuk put in.
Tony laughed. "You must have made a pretty awesome first impression. The only important thing with HeeJun when it comes to people is feeling. He judges everyone by the 'feeling' he gets. It's kinda risky, but he's never been wrong until now. It's funny...once he became boss, H.O.T has become bigger, size-wise and power-wise."
Chil...KangTa nodded numbly. He still didn't fully understand what had happened to him. After HeeJun had introduced him to all those men, they had bowed to him as well as HeeJun. JaeWon suddenly was very friendly and WooHyuk and Tony had stared at him in complete awe.
He frowned a little. "Tony? I don't mean to be...rude or anything, but H.O.T is a gang, right? Don't you have to worry about the cops or anything?"
Tony burst out laughing, to KangTa's surprise and even WooHyuk cracked a grin.
"No no no. KangTa. Don't think of us as a little street gang or one of those gangs in the movies. We're the top group in Seoul. No one messes with us. We even have a few cops as members! Even the government listens to HeeJun! The whole city moves to our command. Of course we have a few rivals and all that junk, but we're pretty safe." WooHyuk explained because Tony was still laughing.
KangTa nodded again. To him, this was all so new and strange. Actually, everything was new and strange. His head still pounded when he tried to think about anything before he had lost his memory.
WooHyuk turned into the parking lot of a shopping mall. "HeeJun wants us to have a few suits tailored for you. He's going to take you to his personal coordinator later, but he wants you to have some decent clothes for now." Tony explained as the three got out of the car.
WooHyuk led the way to the men's department and stopped at the most expensive looking formal wear shop. KangTa looked around in wonder as the salesmen and women rushed to serve them.
"Oh~ Mr.Tony~Mr.WooHyuk~!" The top saleswoman cooed.
Tony smiled brightly. "HyeJin. Did you miss us?"
"Of course....Mr.Tony~ It was mean of you to stay away so long!" She cried as she took their jackets.
"What can we do for you today?" The head salesman, YoungJin, smiled brightly.
"Not us today. HyeJin? YoungJin? Meet KangTa." WooHyuk introduced the shy KangTa.
The girls all gasped at KangTa's handsome face and HyeJin turned her smile toward KangTa.
"He's so handsome! Mr.Tony. Mr.WooHyuk. Where do you get such handsome friends! As if your faces weren't enough." She giggled.
Tony leaned back in the sofa. "Pick out a few suits for him. One black and the rest you decide. I think 3 will be enough, right WooHyuk?"
WooHyuk nodded as he sat down next to Tony.
"Mr.KangTa? Will you come this way?" YoungJin escorted the awkward KangTa toward the back rack, where the most expensive suits were hung.
An hour later, WooHyuk, Tony and KangTa were heading out the main entrance of the mall. KangTa was dressed in a navy blue suit in the latest design. The clothes alone would have caused people to stare, but KangTa's fine, handsome face turned all the heads of the females shopping.
Tony laughed at KangTa's embarrassed face. "You look stunning! Look at those girls stare!" KangTa blushed redder.
WooHyuk put his arm around KangTa. "You've got it all, KangTa. Looks, money, and HeeJun."
"Money?" KangTa stammered.
"I guess we'd better categorize the money with HeeJun. He's going to go all the way with you." WooHyuk laughed.
KangTa didn't answer. He felt uncomfortable in the stiff suit and under the gaze of the whole mall.
KangTa was silent until they reached Tony and WooHyuk's apartment.
"WooHyuk? What do I have to do, now?" He asked timidly as they changed into more comfortable clothes.
"Here. We got you some clothes that fit our taste with the extra money HeeJun gave us. We didn't know what style you like, so we just picked out stuff we liked. It's mostly hip-hop." WooHyuk threw a few stuffed shopping bags to KangTa.
KangTa pulled out a gray wool collared shirt and a pair of baggy overalls. This was more like it. He pulled off his new suit.
"You look great in just about anything. HeeJun doesn't consider hiphop as a fashion, but he doesn't care what we wear. As long as we wear suits for H.O.T. Oh. Didn't you ask me something?" WooHyuk looked up at KangTa.
"Yeah. What'll I have to be doing?" KangTa looked more relaxed in the overalls.
"Nothing much. HeeJun's going to be calling you often, now, so just do what he tells you to." Tony assured him.
KangTa nodded. "Oh. OK."
"Now. You have to know a couple of things. One, you ALWAYS bow to HeeJun and JaeWon. You'll have to bow to us, too. And until HeeJun clarifies your ranking, it'd be a good idea to bow to all the boys, too. Always call HeeJun and JaeWon, 'sir', notice we do, too, even though we use HeeJun's name when JaeWon isn't there. JaeWon's father used to be the vice-president of H.O.T, but he died of heart problems. JaeWon took his place, and he considers his job very important. He never breaks tradition, but HeeJun often does. JaeWon can't do anything without HeeJun's permission, so he disliked HeeJun for a while, but now they're best friends. JaeWon won't permit us to call his name or HeeJun's in his presence. Anyway, don't get on JaeWon's wrong side, because JaeWon can be higher than HeeJun when he gets mad. Watch how the others act around HeeJun and copy them, but I think HeeJun will give you those directions soon." Tony finished. Looking at KangTa's confused and scared face, he laughed lightly.
"Hey...why the heavy face? Don't worry about anything! You have the two top command leaders for friends and the president of H.O.T for protection! You'll have it easy, trust me." Tony reassured KangTa.
KangTa nodded absently.
"Do you fight?" KangTa looked startled at HeeJun's question.
HeeJun smiled. "I guess not. Actually you don't know, do you?"
KangTa nodded.
"Hmm...I'll teach you, then. You'll have to be able to use your fists in this world." HeeJun laughed. He surveyed KangTa from top to bottom.
"You look good. Your face shines in a suit. All men do. Your body seems strong, though. You're thin, but you look steady. I'll have an instructor teach you the basic skills, and then you'll have to work out those skills. Ah. And KangTa?"
KangTa looked up.
"Don't look so nervous around me. I want to be your friend. You don't have to be afraid of me or anyone in H.O.T. Don't bow to anyone besides me and JaeWon, Tony and WooHyuk are the head leaders of the committees, but I don't want you under them. We'll see how you do in training, and I'll give you a few boys to take care of you. You'll be my right hand man, if you do well." HeeJun smiled patting KangTa's shoulder. KangTa's eyes and voice and his face went well into HeeJun's heart, and though he didn't know why, he trusted KangTa with all his heart and soul.
KangTa's fighting skills were soon put to test. HeeJun was seen to frown the first few days, but KangTa's loyalty and hard work soon paid off. KangTa began to live up to his new name, and he became a fear to the rivals. KangTa...a heavy blow...was just what ChilHyun became. His punches became famous among the underground gangs and it was reported that even WooHyuk couldn't stand up to one of KangTa's fists. But more than KangTa's skills, the way he glared at you out of the corner of his eye was supposed to be deadly. His sharp face and glare were feared even by H.O.T and his own men. But the glare was only thrown when KangTa was mad, which wasn't often, but when he was, everyone in his path was in danger. KangTa's gratefulness to HeeJun showed in his every action, and he was the most loyal server of H.O.T. His life revolved around HeeJun and soon he became part of the underground system of power, money, blood and death.
(Many many months later)
"WHAT?!?" HeeJun roared as he whirled around to face JaeWon.
JaeWon bowed lowly. "I'm extremely sorry, sir. We did our best, but the new members that they used are good." JaeWon bowed again.
"We haven't lost a single acre of land or a single case or a single man in the last year. Is H.O.T getting weaker? Have we already lost control?" HeeJun spoke in a dangerously soft voice.
"No sir. I'm sorry sir. We'll try again, sir." JaeWon bowed low.
HeeJun was silent for a few moments. The fight for power was almost forgotten nowadays, for H.O.T's power was great, but recently a new group, SechKies had appeared. They were by far a weaker gang, their skills and brains were pathetic compared to HeeJun's, but due to their 'connections', they had a reasonable amount of power in the government. Now JaeWon was reporting that 5 men had been killed in last nights skirmish. He sighed and turned.
"That will do. Don't send out your boys again until they've trained more. And call KangTa for me." JaeWon nodded and bowed as he walked out. He personally thought that HeeJun put too much trust in KangTa, but KangTa seemed loyal and he trained his boys well. He took out his cellular.
"Sir!" KangTa bowed to HeeJun.
HeeJun turned slowly and looked at KangTa. His perfect face and fine body ceased to amaze him still. HeeJun always felt better at the sight of KangTa.
"You know the leader of 6Kies, don't you?" HeeJun asked sitting in front of the desk.
"Yes, sir. Eun JiWon, sir." KangTa bowed.
HeeJun paused a moment before taking a document out of his desk. He handed it to KangTa.
"I want you to take this to him. Deliver it personally to him and only him. Don't send anyone else, and don't give it to anyone besides Eun JiWon himself." HeeJun said darkly.
"What~~" KangTa hesitated as he took the files.
"They're papers that contain evidence that SechKies are getting their power from the government. And how sneaky they are being. We know their every trick, but we haven't talked. I want them to know that they don't mess with H.O.T. We're not that dumb." HeeJun answered in one breath.
KangTa bit his lip and waited a second. "Sir. Do you think that would be wise, sir? They...their men are stronger than we expected. Last night..." KangTa started.
"Were you there last night!?" HeeJun's eyes flashed lightening for a second.
"No sir. I heard from JaeWon sir." KangTa reassured him.
"Go on." HeeJun dropped back into his chair.
"Last night, five of JaeWon's strongest were killed. SechKies don't know anything about mercy or gentlemanly attitude. They do whatever they want, but that seems to be deadlier." KangTa said.
HeeJun nodded. "I'll keep that in mind. Keep our boys away from them for now. And deliver the document as I told you. Take your men with you. I don't want your face to get hurt." HeeJun closed his eyes as a sign for KangTa to go.
With a deep bow, KangTa left the room and headed to his waiting car.
"Call the boys, JiHoon. Have them meet me at the front of the SechKies office in 30 minutes. Be quick!" KangTa said shortly.
KangTa got out of his car and was soon surrounded by a dozen of his men.
KangTa's 'right-hand', JiHoon, bowed to KangTa. "Sir! They won't allow us in, sir!"
KangTa nodded his head to his right. Immediately, 3 men shot out and kicked open the door. JiHoon led KangTa in through the splintered wood.
They were stopped by 7 tall men, but KangTa's men moved through them as if they weren't even there. KangTa didn't have to look back to know that those 7 were probably either dead or seriously injured.
He walked up undisturbed to the 6th floor, where Eun JiWon's office was located. A couple of guards stopped them at the door.
"What do you want?" They sneered.
KangTa stood silent for a second. Then he shot a look at the two.
"I am KangTa of H.O.T. I have come under the order of our leader, Moon HeeJun, to deliver this," KangTa raised his briefcase, "to Eun JiWon."
His cold voice startled the two guards as they stared at each other, wondering what to do. KangTa's men took the chance to barge open the double doors.
"What the~~" Six men were in the room and one of them jumped up as they saw KangTa. KangTa didn't hide the horror in his eyes as he looked around the office.
Unlike HeeJun's perfectly orderly and immaculate office, Eun JiWon's room was cluttered and down right dirty. Cigarette smoke drenched the walls and there were noticeable stains on the carpets and sofas. KangTa had heard about SechKies disorder, but this was the first time he actually saw an example.
Eun JiWon, a comparatively handsome man in his twenties, stood up.
KangTa walked up to him and bowed. "I am KangTa of H.O.T. I have come by command from our leader Moon HeeJun."
JiWon turned pale at the word, H.O.T. He licked his lips nervously as he stared at KangTa. KangTa returned his gaze without a flicker.
"What...does he want?" In his nervousness, JiWon used a harsh voice that bothered KangTa.
"This, sir." KangTa took the files out of his briefcase and handed them to JiWon.
JiWon took them cautiously and flipped through them. A few seconds later, his face turned red with fury.
"What the hell is all this?" He shouted at KangTa.
KangTa stared back at him. His jaw clenched, but he answered politely. "Mr.HeeJun said that all he has to say is in those files. He would like for you to return the property that is rightfully ours."
A snicker from behind startled KangTa. He whipped around. The man who laughed was Kang SungHoon, the VP of SechKies. He was said to be brainless and very strong.
"Come and get it back, why don't you? You aren't much~ It was kid's play to send you all off last night!" His sickening voice and laugh annoyed KangTa.
"May I understand this as a challenge and report to our leader?" He asked in a tight voice.
Eun JiWon started to speak, but SungHoon stopped him. "Go ahead. I haven't anything to do these days, anyway. I want some fun."
KangTa walked out of the office quickly. He glared at SungHoon as he passed him. "It won't be fun when we get started." KangTa whispered.
"2 deaths last night, sir. We underestimated SechKies power." WooHyuk looked worriedly at HeeJun. "They ruined another one of our casinos last night. It's not looking good."
Tony stood nervously. "Sir. Kang SungHoon, sir. He's behind all of this. He's using unfair tricks. Girls and whiskey."
HeeJun stared at him. "What?"
"Girls and whiskey, sir. You know no man can stand the lure. It's Kang SungHoon's own weakness, but it's also his strong point. He uses girls and alcohal to wear out our men before they crash in." Tony's ears turned a bright red.
HeeJun sighed deeply. "Where is KangTa?" he asked.
WooHyuk and Tony exchanged uneasy looks.
HeeJun noticed their nervousness and quickly sat up. "Where is he?"
"Sir...he...KangTa is...he's with Kang SungHoon, sir. He was pissed when SechKies sent their men as spies, you know, as guests at the casino. No one could stop him." WooHyuk answered nervously.
HeeJun dropped his head in his hands. "Who's with him?"
"We found out he went 5 minutes ago. We sent our boys after him, but...he went alone, sir." Tony twitched.
"WHAT!!!!" HeeJun screamed.
Kang SungHoon sneered right into KangTa's face.
"What do you want?" He asked.
"I demand you to stop all this at once! Spies and girls? What next?" KangTa nearly spit out.
"Ah ah ah!! I can't tell...it wouldn't be any fun if I did, now would it?" SungHoon laughed loudly.
KangTa trembled with rage. HeeJun had always been a sincere gentleman to him and KangTa had never heard of tricks that were used in the under world. He hadn't lived long, his lost memory was still under a wave, only a year. Life was still clean and pure to him, no matter where he was. But this!!!"
SungHoon jeered at KangTa. "You H.O.T think that you're the world. Well we're going to show you that you aren't!"
KangTa let out a stifled breath. He could feel the back of his neck get hot.
"You think you are all honest and truthful and you think you're all gentleman! Wake up! You're kkangpae's! Who cares if you're H.O.T? You are all a bunch of gang members!" SungHoon shouted at KangTa. "You haven't been awake for very long, now have you? You haven't heard of H.O.T besides from your own side, right? Well, I'm going to enlighten you. Recently, H.O.T killed off a whole hotel full of people. You didn't know about that did you?" SungHoon laughed at KangTa's astonished face.
"The hotel owner wouldn't pay up. So H.O.T just burned it down. The whole hotel full of innocent people. Now do you think that we're being tricky? And that precious leader of yours. He's practically a magician, I've heard. He's got a few tricks up his sleeve, t...uh!" SungHoon gasped as KangTa grabbed him by the collar. Then he let out a laugh.
"You can't hit me. They say your fists are deadly, but look around you. There are only 2 fists, and more than that of us." SungHoon nodded to the ring of men surrounding the two. KangTa hesitated and let go.
"Ha...sissy." SungHoon whispered as KangTa turned out of the room.
KangTa ignored him at headed toward the door when SungHoon grabbed him.
"Uh uh. Did you think I'd let you just walk out? No way. Fellows? Tie him up. I want to practice my sparring." SungHoon pushed KangTa toward two heavy men.
"Let him go." A deep voice sounded. SungHoon looked up in surprise, but suddenly stared in fear. A dark figure stood at the door. His silky front hair fell over his face and his eyes glittered dangerously. All 20 guards at the door lay on the floor, which was a puddle of blood. The man looked up. It was HeeJun.
"HeeJun!" KangTa shouted in shock. HeeJun had never actually come face to face with any of their rivals since he had become the leader of H.O.T.
"Let him go." HeeJun repeated.
SungHoon blinked nervously and the two men slowly let go of KangTa's arms. Suddenly, at HeeJun's quick nod, KangTa's fists jammed into the two men's stomachs and HeeJun jumped nimbly over the couch kicking into three men at once. Soon all the men, except SungHoon were sprawled on the floor. HeeJun glared at SungHoon.
"Don't mess with us." He said and led KangTa out the door.
"HeeJun. I'm sorry." KangTa said once they were in the car. HeeJun ignored him.
"HeeJun..." KangTa looked anxious.
"Don't scare me like that again." HeeJun's voice was weak. KangTa nodded.
"HeeJun. SungHoon...he said...the hotel." KangTa hesitated.
HeeJun looked up in surprise. Then he turned his head. "It's all true. I didn't want to hurt you. KangTa. You are so clean. You are what I wanted to be. Your fists are like death, but you're so gentle inside. You're still young. But KangTa. It's time you learned about the real world of H.O.T."
KangTa was silent during dinner that night.
"Heys! Ta? Why the long face?" Tony poked KangTa.
"Huh? Oh...Tony?....Do you like being in H.O.T?" KangTa asked without looking up.
Tony frowned suspiciously. "Why?"
KangTa didn't answer.
Tony sighed. "Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. The world seems so rotten from our point of view a lot of the time. Sometimes I forget all the beautiful things the world contains. But HeeJun brings it back to us. He loves the world too much to be a leader of a gang. He should have been some leader of an intellectual committee or something like that. You know, he hates blood? Its kind of unbelievable for the president of the biggest underground gang to be like, but its true... HeeJun has a really hard past, you know. He was in one of those backward gangs down in the country. His sister, too. I'm not sure, but something happened to the sister, I forget her name, she ran away, and HeeJun got found by our former leader. Lee SuMan. He suffered from a great deal of guilt for a few months, but he got over it. Anyway, what was the question? Oh. Well yeah. I don't regret the fact that I came in here. I'm glad I did. I don't think I would have been able to do anything else."
KangTa wrinkled his brow and swallowed. The clean world he had known was being poisoned with dirt. Of course, he had killed people and seen several deaths, but the violence and dirtiness of all this enraged him. He bit his lip. But he was going to change himself and live in this world. He had only lived a year, it wouldn't be hard to change a year's work.
"Argh! The bastard still doesn't get it, does he?" JaeWon yelled.
HeeJun stared out the window silently.
"We can't just let them get away with all that, can we?" JaeWon shouted.
Tony agreed. "HeeJun! The underground is dirty, but BRIBERY? Isn't that going too far? Especially to the government?"
HeeJun turned around and looked at the four in front of him.
Red-faced JaeWon, fuming with rage. Frowning Tony, trying to fight down his frustration and anger. Cool WooHyuk, but with eyes glittering with danger. And KangTa. HeeJun smiled involuntarily. KangTa with a serious expression on his cute face. No anger, no threat, nothing showed on his face. HeeJun still couldn't read KangTa's eyes. It had been almost a year since he had first discovered KangTa, but he still didn't know him well. To be sure, KangTa didn't either. No one could find out about KangTa's forgotten past. There were times when a blank expression showed on KangTa's face and sometimes a flickering memory seemed to pass his mind. But if he tried to remember anything, KangTa said he felt a painful pounding in his head. No doctor could cure it and KangTa and HeeJun settled to lose the past.
HeeJun blinked. SechKies had bribed one of the government officials and as a result, five of H.O.T's most successful casinos and clubs were turned over to SechKies.
HeeJun turned his eyes to JaeWon. "JaeWon."
"Yes sir."
"Take your boys and do all the back research on the six. You know what kind of research I'm talking about, right? Weaknesses, past relationships, dirty business. The works.....Tony!"
"Sir."
"You have the dandies, right? Take your best faces to the clubs and casinos that they hang at. Get the girls on our side. You know how, don't you? You're a man. Use that!....WooHyuk."
"Sir!"
"You do the book work. You have a lawyer's degree, we need to dust that out again. Oh. And put some of your fighters with the SechKies kids. Not directly, you know. If they want some tricks, we'll give them a magic show." HeeJun's eyes sparkled as they turned to KangTa.
"KangTa."
"Yes sir."
"You...come with me. I'm going to need you for a special job. Your face and sweetness are needed. Spread out your men under those three, except for a few of your best fighters and brains. We won't need too many heads for this job. KangTa. You keep that face nice, you hear? We won't be able to finish this thing without it." HeeJun smiled mysteriously.
"Now go!" At HeeJun's command, all ran toward the double doors. HeeJun leaned back in his chair, eyes glistening as they planned the next move.
"What will I have to be doing, sir?" KangTa asked when he was back in HeeJun's office.
"Did you spread out your men?" HeeJun asked with his eyes closed.
"All but 20, sir."
"Good. KangTa. Sit down." HeeJun motioned to the sofa. KangTa peered at HeeJun strangely, but did as he was told.
"KangTa? Did anyone ever tell you about my past?" HeeJun got up and moved to the seat across from KangTa.
"Not much, sir." KangTa answered.
"I was a street gangster. Pretty tough I thought myself. The right-hand man of our leader, the best fighter.... We ruled the tiny town, basically. I had a sister. She was...in the same gang. She had a pretty face, but her skills were better than mine. She used that a lot. Jumping on people when they were down. She pushed them down and then kicked them. Ha ha...those were the days~" HeeJun's eyes became dreamy.
"She was so sweet. Everyone fell for her. Even our rivals. That's where the trouble started. KangTa. Our boss was in love with her, but she despised him. She was only in the gang because I made her. And...my sister. She was kinder to one of our rivals, who was also head over heels for her, than him. One day, our boss got angry because she refused him and went off with the other guy. He was drunk went he killed that guy and made it seem like she did it. She got scared and ran away that night. When our boss woke up and found out what had happened, he turned the blame to me. I lost it, because I had loved my sister very much, and I had trusted my leader. I was in prison for about 3 months until I was bailed out by Lee SuMan, who had heard about me through various kids." HeeJun focused on KangTa again.
"My sister. I haven't seen her for nearly 4 years, now. Since we were 19. We're twins, you see. Unidentical... I haven't been able to find her, but a few days ago, someone located her. That's where you come in. You pretend you're a normal guy, interested in her, ask her out a couple of times, and bring her to me. My sister likes fine men. She'll come...if she hasn't changed too much. I'm guessing she would run if I showed up myself. Ten to one, she's still scared at the memory." HeeJun explained to KangTa, who sat listening carefully.
"But why would we...." KangTa started.
"..need her? The SechKies main weakness is girls. We use her to get them down. She's a pro when it comes to that. And yet she's still clean~Isn't that amazing?" KangTa blushed furiously.
"KangTa. Her name is Moon EunJi. And this is her picture." HeeJun showed KangTa a framed picture of a very pretty girl. KangTa noticed that their eyes were alike. Suddenly he felt the old familiar pounding in his head.
The second house to the right...ah! There it was. The small brick villa. 7th floor. Fourth window from the left...dark green curtains...there! KangTa scanned the tall building and found the window which HeeJun had told him about. He motioned for his boys to watch for any sign of movement and sat down to wait...and wait...and wait.
Three hours later, she finally appeared. The same face in the picture KangTa carried, but for the shorter hair that neatly framed her face, now. She was alone when she went into the villa. It was obvious she lived alone. KangTa nodded. Now all they had to do was wait till the next time she left and came home.
The next day, she left home early in the morning. KangTa sent men to follow her, and they reported that she had gotten on a bus to a small office building. She was a secretary at one of the smaller businesses.
At seven P.M., KangTa stood nervously behind a tree as he waited for EunJi to appear. He memorized his lines in his head over and over again. He was suppose to say he had seen her on the bus and followed her home. He needed to ask her out on a date. It was simple.
KangTa saw her walking down the street. He waited patiently until her back faced him. At the exact moment, he tapped her on the arm. He put a big smile on his face and started to say his lines, when she turned around and screamed.
"ChilHyun!!" she gasped.
KangTa reeled back as if shot. Her eyes...his eyes...stared in complete shock and disbelief. KangTa's head began to pound uncontrollably and he shouted out in pain. Suddenly his eyes widened and he turned and ran.
EunJi stared at KangTa's disappearing back.
KangTa ran as if the earth had no end. He couldn't feel his feet touch the ground or the people bump in to him. He just ran like a mad man.
Sweating and crying, KangTa stormed into the apartment. WooHyuk and Tony were there, waiting for KangTa.
"Hey Ta? How'd it...what's wrong?" Tony and WooHyuk rushed to KangTa.
KangTa began to scream and his cries filled the whole apartment. KangTa's hands jerked at his hair and tears ran from his eyes. WooHyuk and Tony stared in fear as KangTa dug his fingers into his scalp until blood began to run. They didn't dare touch him. KangTa's high-pitched scream grew into a cry of anguish then into a helpless sob. Noticing that KangTa was getting calm, WooHyuk grabbed his arms and Tony held his head. A few struggles later, KangTa sat silently, with tears running down his cheeks.
"What's wrong?" Tony asked for the second time.
KangTa squirmed and tried to touch his head, but Tony and WooHyuk held on tightly.
"What happened?" WooHyuk tried.
KangTa's tears flowed faster, but soon the muscles in his body loosened and he gasped in exhaustion. His glittering eyes looked up at the two.
"I remember." He said simply.
KangTa sipped a mug of hot coffee. Tony and WooHyuk had washed him up and dressed him again, and he was sitting in bed. Tony glanced nervously and WooHyuk. They wanted desperately to know KangTa's recovered past, but didn't dare hurry him. They didn't have to wait long, though.
"Tony. WooHyuk. My...my name is An ChilHyun. I'm 19...no...20 years old now. I was born in YoungChang, a small town near Pusan. I lived there all my life." KangTa...or ChilHyun...looked up with saddened eyes.
"I was in Ko-1 when I met this girl. She was so pretty and so sweet. She lived in an orphanage. I fell in love with her. Tony. WooHyuk! She was an angel! Her face, her gestures, her smile...they were all so pure. We loved each other and were so happy. But..." Suddenly KangTa hung his head.
"She...she had a hidden past. I don't know how they found out, but rumors started that she was a murderess. That she had killed someone in Seoul. I didn't believe them...not until she herself told me it was true." KangTa heaved heavily at the memory. But he went on.
"She was repentant. Said that she had thrown away her old life and wanted to make a new start. She wanted to be kind to the world now." KangTa's voice broke. WooHyuk and Tony stared at him as he cleared it and kept talking.
"She was so sorry and pitifully unhappy, that the people started to bother her. They'd jeer at her and spit in her face and kick her around...But she just took all of that. At school it was worse. No one would sit with her and the teachers wouldn't let her take tests. I...I loved her, but..." KangTa's face cringed in agony.
"I was a coward. I should have been stood by her. I should have loved her changed person. But I was scared. Not because she had killed...killed a man, but I was scared of the other people. I was scared of a future among people who knew my love was a....killer at one point in her life. I was stupid. But I was scared. I ran away from home. If I had stayed, I could have used the scholarship for Seoul University, but I chose to run. She...her sweetness hurt me. I couldn't believe that she hadn't always been the perfect angel I had loved. She was still an angel. She told me that she loved me, and that she would understand if I didn't anymore. She said that, and I STILL ran away. I'm a coward. I am...I am..." KangTa burst into tortured tears.
Tony and WooHyuk looked dumfoundedly at each other. KangTa...KangTa...the KangTa that had killed hundreds of people up till now, had been cowardly enough to leave the girl he loved?!
KangTa lifted a tear-streaked face. "She was her. The girl I left is..HeeJun's twin sister. She's her."
Tony yelled out in dismay. WooHyuk groaned as he sank down on the bed. Both were thinking the same thing. 'What is HeeJun going to say to all this? What is he going to say when he finds out his beloved KangTa had deserted his sister...?'
KangTa...now ChilHyun...knelt in front of HeeJun. HeeJun's back was turned to the window, but his shoulders were quivering with rage.
"Sir. I am at fault sir. Please. Forgive me sir." ChilHyun bowed his head as he waited for his punishment.
"Kang...no, ChilHyun." HeeJun spoke after a long pause. "I loved my sister dearly. She was half my life. I...I don't know if I can forgive a man who hurt her so badly." ChilHyun's shoulders sank and tears flew to his eyes.
"But...ChilHyun...I love you almost as a brother. And to tell you the truth, I have hurt EunJi more than you have....." HeeJun sighed as he turned around.
"ChilHyun. I'll let you make the choice. You can...stay with us. With H.O.T. Your current rank will be kept and nothing will change. Not even your name. But you can also...leave H.O.T. A suitable amount of money will be given to you, so you can start a new life as An ChilHyun. You will never refer to H.O.T again as long as you live. We will never bother you if you leave us. The decision is yours." HeeJun's voice was like iron.
ChilHyun cringed. To leave H.O.T? To go back to his normal life. To go to college and become the attorney he had always dreamed to be? Or stay with HeeJun, Tony, WooHyuk, JaeWon....and KangTa.
ChilHyun felt the burning glare of HeeJun's eyes. ChilHyun had expected to be removed from H.O.T, possibly killed, when HeeJun found out. But HeeJun had not shown his anger once. He had ordered him to his office early this morning. And he had not said a harsh word.
Suddenly ChilHyun lifted his head. His eyes glittered sharply.
"Sir! I am...KangTa, under the lead of Moon HeeJun of H.O.T. I will serve you to my last breath sir." HeeJun looked up quickly. His hands shook as he heard KangTa speak. He let out a soft sigh of relief. Nobody knew how much HeeJun cared for KangTa. HeeJun could...would forgive him for every wrong. And he was glad that KangTa had returned.
"Good. You can go, now." HeeJun weakly waved his hand toward the door and KangTa bowed as he walked out.
A few minutes later, JaeWon burst in. "Sir. Your sister. She came...by her own will, sir. She's here."
HeeJun ran wildly into the conference room. His sister...EunJi...was...here~!
He ran in to see a small girl with her back to the door. He gasped.
EunJi heard a noise from behind her. Her heart thumped crazily as she turned slowly to face...
"HeeJun!" she whispered.
"EunJi...EunJi..." HeeJun cried running toward her. He grabbed her up in his arms and began to weep uncontrollably.
HeeJun gasped out sobs of joy of guilt...of love. His love for his sister had been stronger than the tie of death, and seeing...holding her once again was like...
A few minutes passed silently as HeeJun wept. But once the first shock of joy diminished, he noticed that the shoulders he held were trembling and that they were small and weak. He pulled himself away from EunJi and looked into her face. Tears ran silently down her face, which hadn't changed at all in the past 4 years. Yet it had, HeeJun noticed when he looked closer. Her eyes, once filled with fire and confidence, held sweet sorrow and fear. And her whole body shouted of sorrow...and death. HeeJun stared.
"Brother. It is me." Her voice was soft and weak.
"EunJi...you have changed!" HeeJun gasped unbelievingly.
"It has been long..." EunJi hung her head as she answered.
"No...EunJi! What happened to you! Who made you like this!!" HeeJun felt the rage choke at him.
"No one...I..."
"It was Kang...ChilHyun, wasn't it?" HeeJun said in a shadowy voice.
At the mention of the name, EunJi's eyes filled. "No...HeeJun. No. It was my...guilt. My own fault..."
HeeJun felt a pang of guilt as he looked into EunJi's eyes. He had help hurt her...led her to run away. It had been too late, to comfort her, she had gone before he could explain anything. If only...
HeeJun sighed. "EunJi. I want you with us." He went straight to the point.
"HeeJun. I can't. I only came to...to say good-bye." EunJi answered softly.
"Good-Bye?" HeeJun asked.
"Yes. Don't look for me anymore. I'm going to live another life. I have a real job, now and no one who knows me knows of my past. I'm going to make a fresh start." EunJi answered shakily, as if not confident.
The uncertainty in EunJi's once powerful voice angered HeeJun. His own sister...how could she have changed so much. How could she be so weak?
HeeJun turned his face.
"You're a fool." He said cruelly.
"HeeJun..." EunJi gasped.
"Stupid. Don't you understand? You can't lose your past. You ran from it, and look at you now. I faced that fact and I'm the boss of the biggest underground gang in Seoul. You?" HeeJun laughed coldly. "Wake up, EunJi. There won't be secrets in the world that you can keep hidden forever. When people find out, no matter how much they trusted you before, they're going to turn on you. It's all part of human nature!!" HeeJun watched as tears flooded EunJi's eyes. He gulped down a feeling of pity as he went on. "Wasn't the thing down in YoungChang enough for you? All the people tormented you...they treated you like a roach." HeeJun's voice grew harsher.
"Please HeeJun...don't..." EunJi begged as she fell forward on her knees, crying helplessly. HeeJun ignored her.
"You worked at the orphanage you lived in. You were loved by all the children and the neighbors. But the minute the rumor started, didn't you feel the cold wind that brushed by you?" HeeJun paused. Closing his eyes to EunJi's white face he gasped out. "Even ChilHyun deserted you."
EunJi's face turned a deadly white and she stared at HeeJun. Her whole body shook as she sat there. Tears that wet her face suddenly evaporated and HeeJun shrank back in fright. EunJi wasn't breathing. HeeJun couldn't move.
It seemed like hours to HeeJun before EunJi blinked. Her face was full of tortured pain and unmerciful death. She looked up at HeeJun.
"What do you want me to do?" She asked quietly.
"EunJi~EunJi~" KangTa cried out the name in sobs. Tony sat up.
It had been two nights since KangTa had recovered his past. Everyone, even KangTa himself, had wished it and hoped for it, but now that it had actually had been revealed, KangTa couldn't sleep without calling her name. As he was doing now.
Tony bent over and shook KangTa. "Hey Ta! Wake up! Hey! It's a dream!"
KangTa gasped as his eyes opened. "Oh Tony... I can't live without her!"
Tony sighed softly as he comforted KangTa. "But KangTa... You have. You've lived a whole year without her." He said.
KangTa turned his head. "That's what kills me the most." His voice was filled with agony and pain. "That it was possible for me to forget her for so long. I don't deserve to love her. I am.."
"You couldn't help it!" Tony cut in. "Any person in his right mind would have..."
"But I wasn't in my right mind!" KangTa screamed. "I was in LOVE!!!"
Tony was still as KangTa's shoulders shook with tears of shame. He felt so helpless. If only HeeJun's sister hadn't been...If only KangTa hadn't remembered...
"KangTa. Calm down." A soft voice spoke in the dark. WooHyuk had come in the room silently and now sat on the edge of KangTa's bed.
"KangTa. Listen to me. HeeJun will let you meet her again. So go and talk to her. Don't torture yourself like this." WooHyuk could feel his friend's pain as if it were his own.
"I can't." KangTa's weak voice spoke. "How can I face her when I left her at the hardest time in her life. How can I look into her eyes when I can see the wound that is there because of me."
This time no one spoke out. There was nothing to say. There was nothing that they could do. Except...
HeeJun paced the floor for nearly an hour. Suddenly he paused and turned to Tony and WooHyuk who stood by his desk.
"So you're saying that KangTa wants to see EunJi again?" He asked.
"Yes...I mean, no..." Tony stammered wildly.
"Sir. He can't sleep or eat or do anything these days. All he has done since he has remembered everything is sit as if he were a sculpture. When he sleeps he has nightmares and wakes up calling her name and when he talks he only blames himself of leaving her and accuses himself of cowardliness." WooHyuk spoke hardly.
HeeJun sighed. KangTa was his most beloved follower. He had loved and trusted him so much...almost like a brother. But to him, EunJi was a priceless treasure.
He loved his sister even more than himself. He didn't know how he could protect the both of them. It was true, the wound that he, himself had given EunJi was even greater than the one by KangTa. But...
"What do you think I should do?" He asked helplessly to WooHyuk.
"Sir. KangTa will die soon if something isn't done." WooHyuk spoke coldly.
"He'll die of starvation or he will commit suicide. He has already attempted twice."
HeeJun looked up in horror. "What! KangTa..."
"Sir. I think they should be allowed to meet just once. Without a third person. So they can sort out their feelings." Tony suggested.
HeeJun was silent for a long minute. Then he nodded.
"Tony send for KangTa and WooHyuk. Go bring EunJi here." He said and fell weakly into his chair.
HeeJun led EunJi to the conference room. He stopped at the door.
"Go in." He said nodding toward the door.
"Why? Who's there?" EunJi looked bewildered.
"ChilHyun." HeeJun opened the door for her and nodded meaningfully.
EunJi stepped back, but HeeJun pushed her in gently and shut the door behind her. Tears flew to her eyes as she met eyes with the boy that had made her so happy at one time. So unbearably happy.
KangTa felt a lump run up his throat. She looked so weak. So sorrowful. He wanted to run up and hug her and hold her and feel her. He wanted to love her again, so bad.
EunJi was the first to speak. "ChilHyun. Do you feel better?" She tried to hide the trembling in her voice, which now sounded hard.
KangTa nodded.
EunJi forced a smile on her face. He looked so pale. And so fine. He had always been the handsomest boy in school. The smartest, finest and sweetest boy. And he had once been her's.
KangTa met the smile with his. His heart was beating in his throat and he dared not open his mouth for fear she would see it. He couldn't see the love that he once had in her big eyes. He imagined hatred and dissappointment....and sorrow in her eyes. The eyes that had trusted him so.
EunJi's heart skipped a beat at KangTa's bright smile. Everything was just so confusing. She had never wanted to see him again. She had wanted to forget him. The fact that she had lied to him. The fact that she was not good enough for him had always been in her heart. But now...now with him in front of her, she wanted to lose herself in his arms.
KangTa cleared his throat. "EunJi." He said hoarsely. He dropped his head from her gaze. He thought he felt an accusing gaze from her.
EunJi looked painfully at KangTa's bowed head. 'He doesn't even want to see me, now...' she thought to herself. "ChilHyun." She answered.
"How have you been?" He asked softly.
"Fine." She answered coldly.
A pang of pain shot KangTa's heart. Her cool voice sounded so icy.
"You will do the job for HeeJun?" He asked, also icily.
"Yes." EunJi answered shortly.
"Be careful." KangTa spoke absently, not knowing what he was saying.
"Don't worry. I'm used to this kind of thing." EunJi spoke cruelly, reminding herself that KangTa detested her for her past sin.
"Oh." KangTa knew EunJi was hinting that he had deserted her because of her sin.
There was a long pause before EunJi stood up and turned toward the door.
"I have to be getting back to HeeJun. The job is tomorrow night." She said.
"Yes. Go." KangTa felt his love for EunJi being burned up in flames. 'Don't go! Please don't go!! I can't go on without you! I can't! ' His heart screamed.
"..." EunJi put her hand on the doorknob. 'ChilHyun...I love you...please say you'll forgive me...please!' Her heart called out.
"EunJi!" Her name burst out of his mouth against his will.
EunJi's heart stopped as she froze.
"I..I..I.." KangTa's couraged failed at the last minute. He sank back into the sofa.
"My name is KangTa. I'm not ChilHyun any longer." He whispered.
EunJi felt tears pour down her cheeks. She raced out of the room slamming the door behind her. KangTa fell forward toward the door with his hand stretched out. His love, his life, his world just walked out of the door. Tears of shame and hate toward himself spilled out his eyes.
EunJi didn't know how she had gotten there, but she was in her bed. Her breaking heart hurt...it hurt so much. His last words. What did they mean? Was he saying that the ChilHyun that had loved her so much was now gone? Was he saying that he was willing to change his name to forget that they were ever together? Did he mean ... EunJi wept stormily, hoping and praying that her love for him, her love that refused to die, would disappear with the tears.
The next night.
HeeJun looked down at the thousands of serious faces that were grouped in the basement room. In the very front were JaeWon, WooHyuk, Tony and KangTa.
HeeJun turned his head. EunJi stood at the very highest place on his right. He smiled at her softly and she smiled back. There was no sign of nervousness in her face, which was like stone. HeeJun turned back to his men.
"Tony!" He called out.
"Yes, Sir!" Tony answered loudly.
"Have you got the girls to cooperate?" HeeJun asked.
"Yes sir. Our men have persuaded them to stay on our side, sir." Tony's face was serious.
"WooHyuk!"
"Yes sir!"
"You have your men surround the building. You know the entrances, right?"
"Yes sir. We have that all under control. And sir! We have a signed document stating that those clubs are ours. We'll have it ready for EunJiWon." WooHyuk smiled nastily.
"Are they realistic? Will he fall for it?" HeeJun bent his head.
"SechKies doesn't seem to have a single lawyer amongst them. And they don't know the first thing about law. They won't suspect a thing." JaeWon snickered.
HeeJun's eyes laughed. "KangTa. You place your men inside the club. Don't let them know you are H.O.T. And especially don't show your face. KangTa, anyone who's seen you won't ever forget you. You're so fine." HeeJun winked at him, not noticing EunJi's shaking face.
KangTa nodded silently.
"JaeWon. You know SechKies well. Instruct the manager of the club and the servers. And then stick with me."
"Yes sir."
HeeJun rubbed his hands as he smiled. "Now go! Do well. We need this one. If you all just do what you need to, EunJi will do the rest. Go and report back here tomorrow at dawn!"
The floor cleared as fast as it had been filled and soon, only HeeJun, EunJi and 50 of HeeJun's personal protecters were left in the enormous basement. HeeJun took EunJi's arm and let her out to his waiting car.
EunJi rubbed her sweating hands on the sides of her skirt. She wasn't nervous.
Not exactly. This had been almost routine 5 years ago. Feeding wine and whiskey to men until they were drunk. And then when their minds were still hazy, she'd put sleeping pills in their drink. They would fall asleep and then she'd let the others do the rest. It was simple. And she was a pro.
But this time it was a little different. She'd have to persuade Kang SungHoon to take her to his house. And while he was sleeping, she would have to search the house for the evidence that he had bribed the judges of the court. Somehow JaeWon had found out that the documents were SungHoon's office. But she would have to get out before the alarm went off. The alarm was set to go off 5 minutes after any enterance in the office if Kang SungHoon didn't press in the code.
HeeJun smiled at EunJi one last time as he stepped out of the room. He headed to his car and back to the headquarters. This would be a piece of cake.
11:22 P.M.
The only customers in the whole club were all KangTa's men. The music was booming and like always, waiters were serving everyone politely. There were men pretending to be drunk in the back and people on the dance floor. From the outside, it all looked fairly normal.
12:02 P.M.
SechKies' EunJiWon, Kim JaeDuk and Kang SungHoon walk in. KangTa watched them from the corner of his eyes. 'So there's only 3 of them. JaeWon must have knocked off the other three on their way.' He thought. A few minutes later brought a call to confirm the thought. The other leaders of SechKies had died of an 'accidental' car crash.
12:15 P.M.
12 girls, all under Tony's control, surrounded the three members of 6Kies.
Cocktail and club soda had started the night, which was getting darker and darker. Only weak soda was fed to an unsuspecting Kang SungHoon.
12:32 P.M.
EunJi comes out. KangTa looked on in worry as EunJi's smiling face sat next to Kang SungHoon. Her hands poured glasses of whiskey for SungHoon and she deliberately leaned closer to him. She flirted easily, to KangTa's rage, and SungHoon was already falling for her.
1:47 A.M.
SungHoon, with his arms around EunJi, leaves the club. His eyes are empty, but he has a triumphant smile on his face as EunJi chats brightly to him. JiHoon laughs amusedly at KangTa's enraged face.
At KangTa's nod, he contacts WooHyuk who is waiting outside.
2:10 A.M.
Only 10 men out of the 93 of the SechKies' men that arrived that night are breathing. Eun JiWon and Kim JaeDuk are taken to HeeJun. The 'fake' documents are enough to scare them and they confess, to HeeJun's delight.
HeeJun leaned back in his chair, satisfied. They had two confessions. Now with EunJi's documental evidence, Seoul was as good as their's.
Meanwhile, EunJi giggled at one of SungHoon's jokes as the car sped toward his house. SungHoon kept trying to touch her, but she escaped nimbly. This was her expertise, but she let out a sigh of relief when the house came into view.
EunJi looked around the house quickly and noticed that there would be no one to interrupt her. All the servants seemed to have dissappeared, and Kang SungHoon sent all but 2 of his men home. EunJi smiled secretly.
"Mr. SungHoon," she giggled. "I want a drink...I'm soo thirsty."
"I'll give you something that'll quench your thirst better than wine." SungHoon smiled heavily as he bent toward EunJi.
"No no~" EunJi's laugh sounded high. "I want a drink-- I'm too wide awake for anything."
SungHoon laughed thickly and teetered over to the side table for the bottle of brandy. He poured two glasses, overfilling both of them, and then came back with nearly empty glasses, having spilt most of it on the way.
EunJi laughed again as she took her glass and held it up. "Cheers?" she smiled.
SungHoon was tore his eyes from her body and smiled stupidly as he lifted his glass. As the two glasses met, EunJi gently tipped hers foward sending a shower toward SungHoon's face.
"Oh...I'm so sorry." EunJi cooed as she bent foward to wipe his face.
Cursing and spitting, SungHoon pushed her away. He ran toward the bathroom.
EunJi's lips stretched into a smile as SungHoon disappeared. From her hand she pulled out a small white paper package. She slowly unfolded it and emptied the white powder in SungHoon's glass. Then she spat it in.
"That's for being such a bastard." She murmured as she mixed the whole thing with her finger.
By the time SungHoon barged in, EunJi was sipping her brandy calmly.
One look at SungHoon's eyes told EunJi that he was awake, and that if she wasn't careful, he'd get what he wanted. EunJi swallowed the uneasy feeling she got and smiled brilliantly.
"I'm so sorry about the brandy. I didn't mean to. How could I to someone so handsome and fine as you?" She said. 'Handsome my foot!' She thought.
"Shut your stupid bitchin' mouth and get over here!" Roared SungHoon nastily.
"Oh Mr.SungHoon....what's the hurry? We have all night." EunJi said. 'My what mouth? I'll get you back for that.' she thought.
"Please? Let me give you a drink. You look so hot." EunJi held the cup with sleeping powder in it toward SungHoon.
SungHoon sat down weakly next to EunJi and took the cup. He was feeling a little burned anyway. He drank the whole glass at once.
2 minutes later, SungHoon was snoring away on the couch.
"Shut up you #@!*?$!" EunJi hissed. She hesitated a moment, but closed her eyes as she held up the knife in her hand. She remembered that awful day when she had last held a knife in her hand. The expression on the boy's sleeping face. The red puddle on the white velvet booth. EunJi stopped herself just in time. She had promised HeeJun to finish this job and she was going to do it. EunJi bit her lip and stabbed her knife into his throat. SungHoon would be in hell by the time the sun rose the next morning.
EunJi hurried out and ran down the stairs. She could hear the 2 guards having their own little party in the kitchen and smiled in relief. Now all she'd have to do was find the documents.
The office was a mess. The desk was cluttered with nasty magazines and the ashtray was filled with cigarette stubs. EunJi wrinkled her nose.
Hurriedly she sorted through the few papers in the file cabinets. Nothing.
The search through the bookshelf and folders ended up as nothing again.
EunJi's heart started to race as she saw that there was 2 minutes left. She bent down on all fours searching the ground. Papers there were many, but no sign of...oh! EunJi ran over to the window seat. There, was a bundle of folders. The very top one had the signed contract. EunJi smiled as she hugged the papers to her chest. As she ran out the door, something on SungHoon's desk caught her eye. EunJi turned for a better look. The thing that had made her stop was a sheet of paper with KangTa's picture glued to it. EunJi felt her heart drop as she stared at ChilHyun's picture. He always looked so good. She felt a tear trickle down her cheek. What would he think if he saw her just now. Crying...for him.
The ChilHyun who had loved her hated to see her cry. Especially for him. He had scolded her for hours when she had cried over his sprained ankle. Suddenly EunJi noticed the writing next to the picture.
"Moon HeeJun's right hand. We want him done with." It was SungHoon's writing.
"Will Do." It was an answer by 'NRG', a weak gang, but one who was rumored to have the best brains in Korea. One who had no wish for power, but wish for blood. They were the gang that helped every gang kill. They were murderers.
The date was set to June 7th. Tomorrow. EunJi couldn't move. She heard the alarm go off behind her. But she couldn't 'move. ChilHyun~~
"What the!!!" HeeJun's eyes whirled.
"The alarm. It went off before she came out sir." JaeWon tried to calm HeeJun.
"Where is she." HeeJun was running out the door.
"Sir...I..." JaeWon started.
"WHERE IS SHE!!!!" HeeJun turned around and roared.
"Life sentence..." KangTa fell weakly to the floor.
Tony hung up the phone and buried his head in his hands. "I knew she couldn't make it. It was way too risky. The..."
WooHyuk shoulders slumped. "Well. She hasn't told. About us."
"She will eventually. She can't help it! They'll find out about it by something she says!" Tony protested.
"Yeah. I guess." WooHyuk sighed at his fate.
"She won't." KangTa's voice turned the twos' heads.
"She won't tell. She won't." Tears poured out of KangTa's eyes.
"KangTa..." Tony looked sympathetically at KangTa.
"She won't tell. Not even if her life was in danger. She won't tell about us. She'd rather die." KangTa sounded so sure.
Tony and WooHyuk looked at each other and sighed. Well there went one worry.
But KangTa. His eyes looked like death.
KangTa felt the hot tears run down his eyes. She wouldn't tell. Never. He knew EunJi to the core. She was an angel. He knew it. Even if she had killed someone. Even if she still killed a person. She was the sweetest, most loyal, most loving person in the whole world. She was the one for him.
And he hadn't been able to protect her. Tears wet KangTa's cheeks as his hands clenched into two fists. He hadn't been there for her when she needed him.
When she was in trouble. He was a worthless being that didn't deserve to live. KangTa felt himself wishing that his life could just end there. A life that never deserved to began.
"I'm going to go for a walk." KangTa announced in a choked voice. WooHyuk and Tony nodded silently as KangTa stumbled toward the door. Pity and sympathy filled their eyes as he ran out.
KangTa raced down the stairs of the apartment. He wanted to get away from everything. The hate, the blood, the tricks, the dirtiness of the underground. Everything that had taken EunJi away from him. Everything that had made him helpless. KangTa fought the stinging tears as he ran out of the alley. He ran so hard that he didn't even notice the dark shadow behind him.
KangTa hung his head as the cool wind blew in his face. The narrow alley that led out of the apartment met an intersection and he hesitated for just a moment before swerving toward the road to his right.
It was just a second. Just one second when KangTa heard a crack and felt himself being pushed to the ground. KangTa fell foward face front on the sidewalk and couldn't catch his breath for a moment. A figure slumped upon him...It was EunJi.
"EunJi!" KangTa ignored the pain of the fall as he scrambled up.
Bright red blood pored from EunJi's side as KangTa stared in horror.
"EunJi!! What happened! What.." KangTa's eyes whirled.
The leader of NRG cursed under his breath as he pointed the gun again. "I'll have both their lives now. That bitch of a girl can't stop me again, whoever she is..."
His finger settled on the trigger as he smiled to himself.
But that shot was not to be. WooHyuk kicked the dead man to the side of the road and hurried toward EunJi and KangTa.
"ChilHyun...Are you OK?" EunJi smiled weakly as she looked up into KangTa's eyes.
KangTa grabbed EunJi in his arms and shook her hard.
"What the hell is going on here!" He screamed.
"They're after you...They were after you. I couldn't let you go..." EunJi gasped out in short spurts.
"And you.." Tears ran down KangTa's eyes. "You saved me." He ended weakly.
EunJi's eyes fluttered and she bit her lip. The bleeding was getting more serious.
"Stupid. You fool. Why did you just let me die. I wanted to. I wanted to so bad." KangTa sobbed out, not thinking straight.
No answer came from EunJi. KangTa suddenly gasped. "EunJi!!"
EunJi strained to open her eyes that demanded to close. "KangTa. I couldn't let you go." She said softly, she raised her hand to caress KangTa's teary face.
A light slowly filled KangTa's eyes as they grew wide. He pulled EunJi close to himself. "You loved me. You loved me still." He didn't notice the blood run into his white shirt.
"I do love you. Please ChilHyun. Please say you'll forgive me and say that you love me...just once. For the last time." EunJi's voice got softer.
"I love you. I don't know if I deserve to hold you. To touch you. To hear this from you. But EunJi. I love you." KangTa held EunJi close as he breathed out.
EunJi sighed as if her every wish was fulfilled. KangTa looked down at her with eyes full of recovered love. It was then when he saw the blood.
"EunJi!!" KangTa's voice trembled as he looked around at the warm puddle of blood he was knelting in. He sat there, stunned. A moment later, though, he was ripping off his shirt.
"ChilHyun!" EunJi gasped out, now finding it hard to even breathe.
"I won't lose you again. I'm not going to let this be the end. I'm not going to let you do this for me!" KangTa wrapped his shirt around her trying desperately to stop the blood.
"Here. Let me." KangTa looked up to see WooHyuk knelting next to him. With a steady hand, WooHyuk tied the now red shirt securely and looked over at KangTa.
"Take her to the hospital. I'll take care of everything else here." WooHyuk's face didn't change a bit as he turned back toward the apartment.
KangTa nodded and picked up EunJi in his arms. The trickle of sweat that fell from his forehead dropped hesitantly as KangTa ran. He ran, trying to outrun the uneasy feeling in his back.
"EunJi!" It was only a few minutes later when EunJi's pale face looked up at KangTa's.
"I'm OK. Don't worry. They say I'll be OK." EunJi comforted the sobbing KangTa.
"I'm sorry. It's because of me. It's all because of me." KangTa sobbed out tears of relief and pain. He could cry now that the danger was over.
"No. I did it for me. I couldn't...I wouldn't be able to live...if...anything happened to you." EunJi's gentle voice soothed KangTa.
"You're an angel. My angel." KangTa's voice was steady as he stopped his tears and looked into her eyes.
EunJi squirmed in happiness. Tears sprang to her eyes. "I can risk my life a hundred times to just hear those words. Oh ChilHyun. I thought I would be too late. I thought that the last year without you would repeat. Except this time, it would last a lifetime."
"I missed you so much. When I discovered you were gone that day, I thought of...ending my life. It seemed meaningless to live on without you. The...neighbors got worse. They turned me out of the orphanage after you left. I almost did commit suicide. But something told me...something told me you were still there. I didn't want you to see me again. To make you feel the pain of betrayal again. But I wanted to live another life. So that...just in case we met again, I would be able to hold up my head." EunJi spoke softly into KangTa's bent head.
"I'm sorry. You don't have to forgive me. I don't deserve that." KangTa's voice was muffled as he spoke into her arms.
"No...ChilHyun. Let's just forget all that. Please." EunJi pleaded as KangTa raised his eyes.
"EunJi! How did you...Aren't you supposed to..." Sudden realization started KangTa.
"Prison? ChilHyun. Do you think anything is too strong when you love someone. Nothing could hold my love for you back. Not chains, not guards...not guns." EunJi laughed softly as she looked down at her bandaged side.
KangTa shook his head. "You shouldn't have done it for me. Not for me." He looked down at his shoes, soaked red with blood.
"There's nothing I couldn't have done for you." EunJi touched KangTa's cheek.
"I love you." KangTa spoke steadily.
"ChilHyun...no, you are KangTa now." EunJi's eyes immediately filled as she turned her head.
KangTa turned it back. "Yes...I'm KangTa now. Your KangTa."
EunJi smiled contentedly with tears sparkling in her eyes.
KangTa's eyes met her's and he reached out and held her gently. KangTa raised his lips to touch her when the door banged open.
"HeeJun!" KangTa started up in surprise, but fell back in relief.
HeeJun ran toward EunJi. His eyes showed horror and shock and fear as he looked into her face.
"HeeJun. I'm OK. Don't look like that. I had to do what I did." EunJi smiled weakly up at him.
HeeJun opened his mouth to say something, but couldn't. Instead, he whirled around and his fist reached KangTa's chin.
"HeeJun!" EunJi screamed out as KangTa fell over.
KangTa looked up in surprise as he wrapped his sore chin with his hand.
"You bastard. Look what you did! Look what happened to her because of you!" Tears of rage pored from HeeJun's eyes as he roared.
"HeeJun please..." EunJi begged from the bed, not able to get up.
HeeJun didn't pause a moment as he reached out for KangTa's collar.
"I should have finished you off the day I found out you hurt her like you did. You undeserving son of a bitch. I'm going to kill you. Did you hear me? I'm going to see the end of you!" HeeJun's voice rang through the room as he grabbed KangTa's neck.
"HeeJun...I..." KangTa started to protest, but seeing HeeJun's eyes, he closed his eyes. Settling to his fate.
"You coward. How dare you hurt my sister. My only sister. She meant the world to me. She was hurt enough by me. Why did you have to hurt her again!!! You don't deserve to breathe. You don't deserve to live. You don't even deserve to die. But I'm going to do you a favor and kill you. If I wasn't the gentleman I am, I would have let you rot till the mice ate you. But I'm going to let you off easy." HeeJun's fingers slowly wrapped around KangTa's neck.
"No!!!" EunJi ignored the ripping bandage as she sat up and screamed. "Please HeeJun! He didn't do anything wrong. Please don't HeeJun!" Love and forgiveness screamed out with her voice, along with the cry of pain that followed it.
"EunJi!" HeeJun cried out her name. He hesitated a moment. Then he dropped KangTa to the floor, hard.
"I'm letting you go. But I'm warning you. Get out of my sight. I don't want to see your face ever again." HeeJun spit out. He turned on his heel, running for the doctor.
"KangTa! Get out... Get out before HeeJun gets back. He...he'll forgive you once he calms down. But until then..." EunJi started gasping out between pained breaths.
"EunJi. I have to leave you again. I don't want to, but HeeJun's right. I'm a coward. I hurt you too much. I'll leave for now, but I'll come back. If you love me, I'll come back. Remember this? I have it with me." KangTa showed EunJi a heart shaped stone. "I'll be back...you have my word."
EunJi nodded painfully, the blood soaking the torn bandage a bright red was ignored in their brief embrace.
"I love you." KangTa whispered as he raced out of the room.
Five hours later, EunJi lay awake staring up at a dark ceiling. HeeJun sat breathing softly next to the bed. EunJi stared at HeeJun with loving eyes. Her brother. He always took care of her. After the fire that had killed their parents, HeeJun had been EunJi's protector. He was the one who had taught her to fight. He had been the one who had brought her into the dark world she was in. He was the only light that she felt inside that world.
EunJi thought of the white stone that KangTa had showed her. It was so smooth and perfect. She remembered the day she had first found it.
It was a hot summer day. She and KangTa were skipping stones on a lake. She had stooped down to find a flat stone, when her fingers touched the heart-shaped white rock. She had given it to KangTa. To keep it for always...if he loved her.
He had made her the happiest girl in the world that day. He had kissed her. He had said he loved her. He had...he had promised her...he had given her his word that he would keep the heart always. Forever. Tears trickled down EunJi's cheeks. She remembered how it felt to be loved. To belong to someone. To be a treasured person inside someone's heart. ChilHyun's...no, now KangTa's heart.
The day he had left...EunJi had felt that he had taken the bright sun with him. She couldn't feel any warmth or light. EunJi had thought of suicide, but the fact that he had taken the stone with him had made her stop. Life had been worse than hell after KangTa left her side. EunJi didn't mind the jeering of the neighbors or the nasty tricks of her once kind friends. But when she learned that KangTa had ran away because of her, because of her ugly past, she couldn't go on as before. Shame and fear showed in her every motion and look, and she too ran away.
HeeJun murmured something in his sleep and EunJi looked up. HeeJun. He would be there for her. He would take care of her until KangTa came back. He would be her sun... How shocked and scared she had been when KangTa had first discovered her. And she had felt as if the world had come to an end when she found out HeeJun was the leader of H.O.T. To go back to the world that had driven everyone she had cared for away from her was unthinkable at first. But HeeJun had made her do it. He had the power to do anything. Even control her life. But now she was glad she had come back. EunJi knew that she had to come back to the dark to find what she was looking for. The light. The bright, everlasting, clear light of life. EunJi made a vow in the dark of the night. She would find a way to get HeeJun and her beloved KangTa, as well as herself back to the beautiful world that had once been.
A soft touch woke her the next morning. The glare of the sun through the half opened curtains made her squint her eyes.
"EunJi. You have to eat. Open your mouth." Tony's voice rang in her ears.
EunJi tried to move, but her side hurt too much. She moaned out in pain.
"EunJi~" Tony sighed deeply as he supported her. EunJi cringed as he settled her into a sitting position.
"You have to eat. Argh! You're just like KangTa!!" At the name, EunJi's eyes opened wide and she forgot her wound.
"Where is he? Where is KangTa?" EunJi croaked out. Her voice sounded scratchy and dry.
"I knew that would get you up. Here. Open up. This'll soothe your throat." Tony put a spoon to her lips.
EunJi turned her head and felt the liquid wet her neck. "Where is KangTa?" She asked.
Tony wiped her neck as he sighed again. "He's gone. Don't you remember?" Tony said gently.
EunJi nodded as she sank back into the pillows. That was right. KangTa had left again. But he had promised to be back this time. She had his word for it.
"EunJi. Will you please eat?" Tony pleaded. EunJi laughed at his tired eyes as she obediently opened her mouth.
"There's a good girl." Tony slowly fed her mouthfuls of soup and EunJi had to admit that she felt better.
"You're Tony, right?" EunJi asked once the bowl was empty.
"Mmhmm." Tony nodded as he set the spoon on the table. "I'm Tony. We haven't met formally, yet, have we?"
"I only saw you once at the meeting before..." EunJi's face grew dark as she trailed off. But then she brightened and went on. "HeeJun told me all about you."
Now it was Tony's turn to turn his head. EunJi frowned. "What is it?"
Tony hesitated before he opened his mouth. "HeeJun..."
"What's wrong with HeeJun? What happened to my brother?" At EunJi's frightened voice, Tony smiled slightly.
"Oh. Don't worry. He's not hurt or anything. He's just a little tired from stress and over work. He...collapsed last night. He was the one who took care of you the last couple of days. Now I have two patients." Tony joked.
EunJi smiled back uneasily. Tony hastily changed the subject.
"You feel OK? It's a relief that we have two doctors among us. We couldn't let anyone whe wasn't one of us in here, you know." Tony said.
It was only then that EunJi looked around the room she was laid in. She gasped in surprise as her eyes took in the richly decorated room. Thick Indian carpets were spread on the dark wooded floor and a huge oak mirrored wardrobe stood across from the upholstered bed. Dainty prints danced on the cloths elegantly draped on all five tables that stood in the room, and lace curtains quivered in the breeze through the open window. Paintings in heavy gold frames hung imposingly on the papered walls and delicate details perfected the enormous room.
Tony laughed openly at EunJi's awe. "You like this room? Wait till you see HeeJun's. Or even the one we're going to move you to once you're a little better. You know this is HeeJun's house. He's pretty rich." Tony laughed again.
"Is he?" EunJi gasped out.
"Undoubtedly. The late president of H.O.T, Mr.SuMan, left him everything. This house, his fortune, H.O.T, and power. HeeJun has half the stocks and he has businessess striving in all parts of the world. With the economy booming as it is now, he'll double...triple his fortune in a few years." Tony explained contentedly.
EunJi could only nod silently. This wasn't the world she had thought of.
"Of course, money and fists are the only way to survive in this world. Bribes and extravegant spending is a must, you know." Tony went on.
EunJi nodded, more knowingly this time. Of course. The underground world always ended up like this. The riches and 'business' was all a trick.
EunJi sighed. "Aren't the cops after me?" She asked tiredly.
"Don't worry about that. HeeJun persuaded them that you were probably dead. You just have to be careful and not show yourself for a few months." Tony said.
"Oh." EunJi suddenly felt tired again. She lay back down into the pillows. Tony hurriedly helped her.
"You going to sleep again?" Tony asked her.
"Mhmm...Oh Tony?" EunJi popped open her eyes.
"What?" Tony stared down at her.
"I'm the president's twin sister. Aren't you supposed to bow down to me?" EunJi teased.
"Ha ha...You know that you rank equally with us! HeeJun had that all clarified a long time ago." Tony laughed loudly.
"Just kidding." EunJi smiled as she closed her eyes.
HeeJun woke with a start. Sweat poured down his face. He breathed out slowly.
"The nightmare again?" JaeWon looked down at him sypathetically.
HeeJun nodded with a sigh. He had dreamt for 5 days straight that EunJi was fading away. The same dream over and over again. Only this time, KangTa was with her. HeeJun sighed again.
"HeeJun. Don't worry about anything. EunJi's doing fine. She has a little fever, but that's because she lost so much blood. She'll be fine once she gets her rest." JaeWon comforted HeeJun.
HeeJun nodded again. This time more assuredly.
"Do you have everything in control down at H.O.T?" He asked.
JaeWon nodded. "WooHyuk is taking care of everything. He has our boys out looking for NRG and SechKies. And he has submitted the file to the court as evidence of SechKies' bribe. We really need that documental proof, but we can do without it." HeeJun nodded approvingly.
Suddenly Tony rushed in. "HeeJun! I mean, sir!" Tony glanced at JaeWon.
"What is it? Is something wrong with EunJi?" HeeJun said, alarmed.
"Oh no. Sir. EunJi...she brought this." Tony handed him a paper file.
JaeWon and HeeJun gasped in unison. It was the documents that were in Kang SungHoon's office.
Seeing the two's flabbergasted faces, Tony explained quickly. "Sir. She hid them in her clothes until the cops found them, and took them from her. But she got them back on her way out."
HeeJun fell back, laughing. "EunJi! I knew she'd do it!" He gasped between breaths.
JaeWon smirked as he flipped through the long awaited file. "SechKies? Here we come."
(8 days later)
"WHAT!!!!!!" HeeJun roared.
JaeWon shook his head as if he couldn't believe it himself.
"We lost it, sir. The clubs, the casinos. Everything against SechKies."
"How?" HeeJun dropped weakly into the mountains of pillows.
"I don't know, sir. We had everything! Evidence, written confessions, contracts..." JaeWon sighed. "SechKies is behind all this, sir."
HeeJun held his head. "What does WooHyuk say to all this?"
"He says it's impossible by the book, but SechKies doesn't play by the rules. He's positive it's another trick card. Sir. He says it's useless to fight this one. He suggests we use a different method." JaeWon answered.
"Call him. Tell WooHyuk to come to me. You and Tony go to the headquarters." HeeJun suddenly found himself wishing KangTa were here. KangTa was always calm and cool-headed at situations like this. He always got HeeJun thinking straight. HeeJun sighed as he waited for WooHyuk.
"Sir." WooHyuk bowed low as he entered HeeJun's room.
"WooHyuk. Can you tell me what is going on here?" HeeJun asked slowly.
"Sir. SechKies' Eun JiWon and Kim JaeDuk broke their word, sir. They got to the courts before us and told how we got our evidence. The court could still use the evidence, no matter what source, but though Eun JiWon isn't clever, sir, he knows what he's doing. He bribed the officials and we were charged with breaking and entering, posession of private property and a few more nonsense charges. I got the court to remove them, law is law after all, but they won't budge on the ruling. SechKies gets full posession of all the clubs they first stole from us." WooHyuk spoke coldly, not blinking or pausing once.
HeeJun let out a long sigh. "So what do you suggest?" He asked after a long pause.
"Sir. I think we'd better step off this incident and try another tactic." WooHyuk sank down in a nearby chair.
"...Do you think we should just use our men to barge in one of the clubs. That way is a little old-fashioned, but it'll work just fine against SechKies, now that most of their men are dead." HeeJun frowned.
WooHyuk shook his head. "Sir. I agree that that is the best shot we have, but sir. SechKies has been joined by NRG. NRG has strong men, though very few."
HeeJun nodded silently. "WooHyuk." He said. "Take your men and do a back research on the whole gang. NRG and SechKies, both. SechKies, we know about, but NRG we don't. The leader is..?" HeeJun paused, looking at WooHyuk.
"Dead, sir." WooHyuk answered promptly. "He was the one who aimed at KangTa."
HeeJun nodded. "OK. Do the research and don't let anything get in your way."
"Yes, sir." WooHyuk answered strictly.
"And WooHyuk?" HeeJun asked sinking into his bed.
"Sir?"
"Don't act so formal. JaeWon isn't here. That cold voice of your's is annoying." HeeJun closed his eyes.
WooHyuk flashed one of his famous grins. One that could melt an iron heart.
"HeeJun?"
"Yeah?"
"Shut up."
HeeJun chuckled and rolled over, exhausted.
WooHyuk waited until HeeJun was snoring softly before he went out of the room.
He sighed and put his hand to his head. It had been almost 10 days since the accident and suddenly being in charge of everything had been stressing.
Especially now that everything was going wrong.
WooHyuk whispered a few orders to his 'right-arm', SeungMin. Tony and JaeWon had told him to stay with HeeJun for a few days. To get some rest, for one, but also to take care of the two patients. SeungMin was suppose to be their 'messenger'.
WooHyuk headed upstairs to his room. Tony, JaeWon, KangTa and himself all had their own rooms in HeeJun's spacious house. They rarely ever stayed here, but somehow, the rooms were always ready. WooHyuk paused in front of his door. He frowned a second, but turned abruptly and walked down the hall.
He nodded to the guard who opened the door to the room EunJi was in. No sound could be heard in the big room. As the door clicked behind him, WooHyuk headed toward the 4poster bed.
He heard soft even breathing through the dark draperies that hung around the bed. WooHyuk looked down to see a basin full of water, still cold, that Tony had put down to cool the feverish girl off. WooHyuk smiled too himself. Tony should have been a doctor. He was always the one who didn't blink an eye as he bandaged wounds, no matter how serious. He was always the one who stayed awake all night to look over anyone who was sick. Living with Tony, WooHyuk was sometimes sick because OF the attention that Tony gave him, but WooHyuk was always grateful. His mother was the only memory of love in the strong man's heart, and her early death made him the silent, cold person he looked. But then Tony had entered his life, the first person who was warm to him after his mother.
WooHyuk pushed the draperies to one side and peered down at the sleeping girl.
With a sudden gasp, WooHyuk caught his breath. EunJi's eyes were closed and a slender hand lay upon her flushed cheek. WooHyuk looked in wonder at her innocent face, so unknowing and clean. Untouched by the devil that WooHyuk could feel eating at his soul sometimes, WooHyuk could see through EunJi's heart, it was so clean and pure.
No one knows how long he stood there, staring down at her. But looking at her, WooHyuk found himself. The WooHyuk that he had lost in the swirling dark mist and fog. The silent moments that passed were to be treasured as the happiest and unforgettable time in his life.
With a quivering hand, WooHyuk removed that warm, dry cloth from EunJi's hot forehead. He dipped it in the basin, ringing out the cool water. He wiped her face with a gentleness unknown to him and set the cold cloth back on her forehead. WooHyuk hesitated a moment, but his fingers didn't seem to pause at all. He touched her face, lightly brushing the tips of his fingers on her cool skin. WooHyuk felt a new sensation fill his body, tingling him from the top of his head to his toes. WooHyuk closed his eyes, not knowing what else to do with himself.
A sudden movement startled him, as EunJi turned slightly in her sleep. She murmured something, so soft and quiet that WooHyuk had to stoop to hear it.
His lips pressed together tightly and he snatched away his hand, practically running out the door.
"KangTa..." EunJi had whispered.
It was much later in the day when WooHyuk's calm face submerged from his room. No difference could be seen in him, but if you looked closely, the light in his eyes had changed amazingly. Nothing was different, except everything.
WooHyuk paused in front of EunJi's room.
He smiled to himself. WooHyuk hadn't been able to understand his sudden feeling at first, but unlike most people, WooHyuk was always very sure of himself.
He could figure out everything, even his own heart. His heart. His feeling. He knew that this was...love.
A pang of regret struck his heart, but WooHyuk ignored it. Hours alone had led him to the conclusion that it was useless to fight his heart. He decided to let himself go. To open his heart to the pain and the heart ache. WooHyuk knew that love that had no chance at all would only hurt and wound him, but he was helpless. He could only pray and hope. Pray that he would be able to forget her and his love for her. But that was almost unthinkable...impossible.
WooHyuk turned abruptly from the door. He headed to HeeJun's room.
HeeJun awoke as WooHyuk walked in.
"WooHyuk. Do you need something?" HeeJun asked groggily.
"No. HeeJun. When are you going to let KangTa come back?" WooHyuk asked suddenly.
HeeJun stared at him. Then he turned away. "I don't know." He answered drily.
"Where is he?" WooHyuk asked.
"How should I know?" HeeJun began to look nervous.
"HeeJun. You don't mean that you just let him go. Without sending anyone to follow him? You...KangTa??" WooHyuk swallowed the uneasy feeling he felt.
HeeJun hung his head. "I was angry WooHyuk." He said quietly.
"HeeJun! Are you out of your mind? They tried to kill KangTa, HeeJun. What if something happened to him? What are you going to tell EunJi?" WooHyuk cried in dersperation.
HeeJun turned pale. "I don't know." He answered again.
WooHyuk sighed heavily. "We need to find him, you know."
HeeJun nodded silently.
"How?" WooHyuk murmured to himself. But there was no answer. There was nothing he could do.
"WooHyuk?" A voice woke WooHyuk, who had fallen asleep on the window seat of EunJi's room.
"EunJi." WooHyuk hid the joy in his voice and smiled quietly.
"You are WooHyuk, right? Where is Tony?" EunJi searched the room with her eyes before speaking.
"He's at the headquarters with JaeWon. I'll be here instead for a while." WooHyuk explained and walked toward her.
"Oh." EunJi nodded understandingly. "Sit here." She pointed to the chair that sat next to the bed. "Talk to me. I'm bored."
WooHyuk smiled and sat down. "Do you need anything?"
"No. Just some company. I don't like to be alone..." EunJi trailed off and turned her eyes to the blue sky that streatched outside the glass window.
"Do you miss him?" WooHyuk asked gently.
EunJi nodded, tears filling her eyes. "Do you know where he is?" She asked turning to WooHyuk.
WooHyuk had to turn his head. Her wet eyes, big and innocent, seemed to see right through his ugly soul. "No." He answered truthfully.
"Oh." EunJi sighed. She fingered the stone that never left her hand. It had been 9 days since he had left her with only this stone heart to comfort her. He would be back soon. He promised her. KangTa would be back. Soon.
EunJi smiled into WooHyuk's solemn face. "Are you good friends with my KangTa?" She asked cheerfully.
WooHyuk felt a slight pain, but smiled back. "Tony and I found him all beaten up and half-dead in the back alley. We were the only friends we had until...he met HeeJun and joined H.O.T. Until he...remembered."
EunJi nodded knowingly. "Tony told me. KangTa...the ChilHyun I knew, didn't fight too well, though. Does KangTa?"
WooHyuk laughed. "KangTa? His fist lives up to his name. He knocked me down flat in a second, and I'm suppose to be 'tough'. KangTa has a kind heart, though.
He doesn't use his fists if he can help it."
EunJi beamed proudly. "ChilHyun, I mean KangTa was always like that. In our old town, everyone was his friend. Everyone loved him. He was so kind to everyone. To everything." EunJi's voice grew hazy.
WooHyuk blinked at her. "Do you love him?"
"Mhmm...With all my heart." EunJi said.
"Even when he left you?" WooHyuk persisted.
EunJi flinched. "Yes." She bit her lower lip and looked up into WooHyuk's eyes.
She dropped her eyes from his gaze and sighed. "Actually, he hurt me, too. I tell myself that its only natural that he left me, but I deep inside he left a wound.
KangTa made me cry more than once. He hurt me more than once. But WooHyuk. Isn't that normal? Doesn't love come with hurt, as well as happiness?" EunJi looked anxious.
WooHyuk nodded comfortingly. "Love can hurt you." He said a trifle absently.
JaeWon nodded to his men and they spread out, hiding themselves in various places around the building.
JaeWon waited until he spotted Eun JiWon, former president of SechKies and Chun MyungHoon, former VP of NRG, coming out of the casino together. There were more men surrounding them than expected, but not too much that they couldn't handle.
At JaeWon's signal, his men jumped out and sprang toward the two unexpecting men.
But NRG and SechKies were quick, though not smart. Their men fought as well as if they had been prepared.
Blood and gasps filled the dark night as time passed slowly. JaeWon bit his lip as he saw his men fall one by one. Eun JiWon's lips stretched to a smile of victory.
But a few seconds later showed him that nothing is over until...well, until it was over. JaeWon's fist knocked him to his knees and Eun JiWon felt blood on his clothes. He glared up, eyes full of hate...and danger.
"AHHH!" He screamed and collared JaeWon. The two were neck to neck, fighting for their lives, for their teams.
A minute later, Eun JiWon laughed down on JaeWon's face. JaeWon's arm was twisted behind his back and Eun JiWon held a gun to his head.
"I'm going to blow your brains out and then, I'll blow your leader and his whore of a sister away. Nothing is going to get in my way. Nothing." He sneered in a scratchy voice. His finger tightened on the trigger.
"Bang!"
JaeWon opened his squinted eyes in surprise. He had heard the gun go off, but he...he was still alive. He whirled around. Eun JiWon was standing next to him, with the same dumbfounded expression on his face. There was no gun in his hand.
"JaeWon duck!" A familiar voice yelled. JaeWon didn't have time to think, but crouched to the ground.
"Bang!" JaeWon saw JiWon slump to the ground. Blood seeped out of his skull.
JaeWon turned his eyes to where the bullet had come from. He caught sight of a black shadow running away, and a sudden feeling of recognizition passed his mind, but couldn't make out who it was.
JaeWon suddenly felt queasy. His body became weak as he held his head.
His "right arm" ChangLyul, helped him up.
"ChangLyul. What happened?" JaeWon asked unsurely.
"I'm not sure myself, sir. We all saw the gun go to your head, and didn't know how to stop him, and heard the gun go off, but...Sir! A bullet came from no where and hit the gun out of Eun JiWon's hand." ChangLyul pointed to a dented gun a few feet away.
"And then another bullet hit Eun JiWon sir." ChangLyul finished.
JaeWon looked amazedly toward the alley where he had seen the shadow.
"What the hell..." He murmured to himself.
"Sir...Are you all right sir?" ChangLyul asked in concern.
JaeWon pushed him away and ran his fingers through his hair, dampened with sweat. "Shut up and let me think."
ChangLyul silently led JaeWon to his car. The cool air-conditioner turned on full blast, drying the sweat that drenched both bodies.
"ChangLyul. Did any of you recognize the person who saved me?" JaeWon asked finally.
"Some of the men said that the person killed several men during the fight, sir." ChangLyul started. JaeWon nodded remembering the few men who had fallen unexpectedly and suddenly without reason.
"But no one saw his face clearly. I'll ask around sir." ChangLyul said, picking up his cellular that was ringing.
A few minutes later, he hung up, his eyes filled with surprise and wonder.
"What is it?" JaeWon asked impatiently.
"Sir. We may know who our savior is..." ChangLyul said.
JaeWon suddenly felt a tingle in his body. He knew that voice, it was....
"It's..." The two started in unison.
"..KangTa." Both ended.
"The voice. It was KangTa's voice. I knew I knew it!" JaeWon exclaimed.
"HaNeul says he saw the face directly, sir. He's sure, sir." ChangLyul added.
"I'm sure, too! Wait until HeeJun hears this! KangTa!! Ha! I knew he would come in handy some day!" JaeWon began to laugh.
"Wait until I tell HeeJun that his KangTa saved the day...and my life. He'll be thrilled!" JaeWon couldn't stop exclaiming.
ChangLyul smiled too, but then frowned. "Sir. Uhm..wasn't Mr.KangTa...uhm...dismissed temporarily by The Mr.HeeJun?"
JaeWon stopped laughing for a second. "Oh. Yeah. That's right. Oh well, HeeJun probably misses KangTa more than anyone, so he'll be only happy for an excuse to get him back. I don't think that's a problem."
"What? Are you sure?" HeeJun exclaimed as WooHyuk delivered the news.
"Yes, sir. JaeWon said that the voice belonged to KangTa, and a man saw him for sure." WooHyuk grinned at HeeJun's flushed face.
HeeJun tried to hide the pride that he felt, and looked up at WooHyuk.
"Bring him back, HeeJun. KangTa deserves to be with us." WooHyuk said.
HeeJun nodded slowly. It was true that he had missed KangTa more than he would admit. His anger had blown off the minute KangTa had left, and he had regretted his actions ever since.
"Find him for me, WooHyuk. Bring him to me." HeeJun said and turned over to dream of EunJi and KangTa coming back to him.
JaeWon and Tony looked at each other in desperation as men came in one after another to report their find. Nothing.
H.O.T had searched the whole city, but KangTa was no where to be found.
"What are we going to tell HeeJun?" Tony asked.
JaeWon shook his head. "Who knows." He answered.
"Damn! Where is the guy?" Tony wondered slamming down the phone that had reported more of the same news.
Tony's "right arm" Mikey ran in, gasping for breath. "Sir!" He paused to bow.
"What is it?" Tony asked alarmed. "Did you find KangTa?"
"No, sir. NRG and Kim JaeDuk formed a new group...OPPA, and they've killed 23 of our men. At the club." Mikey announced.
JaeWon and Tony looked at each other in despair, and got up from their chairs.
They ran our, each shouting orders to the men that followed them.
A few minutes later, Tony found himself thick in the middle of black suited men, fists barreling through the air, each fighting to die for their leaders.
Suddenly, though, all was silent. Tony and JaeWon looked in confusion as the newly found OPPA members rushed away. Were they giving up already?
Just then Tony saw a tall man, handsome face, very young standing among kneeled men. He was the leader of OPPA, Kim SangTeh. He stepped forward along with former NRG's Chun MyungHoon.
A smooth smile spread on SangTeh's face as he looked down at Tony and JaeWon. Chun MyungHoon whispered in his ear. "Those two are the arms and legs of H.O.T." SangTeh nodded.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Kim SangTeh, leader of OPPA. And you are Tony An and Lee JaeWon from H.O.T?" SangTeh smiled.
Tony and JaeWon nodded numbly.
"I have a message for your leader. Tell him that OPPA is boss now. H.O.T time is over. We'll have the whole town under our thumb. It is useless to try to stop us, so don't waste your time. Just back off real easily and you'll be OK." SangTeh spoke with a sticky smile. His voice was as pleasant as if he were talking of the weather.
"Who the hell do you think you're talking to?" JaeWon rushed at him, red faced.
SangTeh stepped back, his hands in the air and a mocking expression on his face.
Tony stopped JaeWon and looked SangTeh in the eye. "Don't under estimate us. We'll see who wins."
"We will." SangTeh's eyes laughed as he turned away with his men.
Tony led a fuming JaeWon to the car. "Who the hell is he?" Tony murmured under his breath.
JaeWon gulped down the cold water that was given to him. "Find out everything you can on Kim SangTeh and his men. HURRY!" He screamed to his men.
SangTeh leaned back in the seat of his car and bit the cigar that MyungHoon offered him. MyungHoon lit it and SangTeh drew in deeply.
"H.O.T is tougher than I imagined." He said after awhile. "But not tough enough. Who is their leader, anyway?" He faced MyungHoon.
MyungHoon frowned. "Who was it..? Oh yeah. It's Moon HeeJun. He's the leader and the brain of H.O.T."
SangTeh suddenly turned pale. "Who?"
"Moon HeeJun. Why? Do you know him?"
SangTeh pulled the cigar from his lips with a trembling hand. "I...I" He glanced at MyungHoon and put on a fake smile. "No." He finished.
"Calm DOWN, JaeWon. You're going to piss off HeeJun if you rage like that." Tony had to run to keep up with JaeWon's fast strides.
"You calm down. The nerve of him! Does he know who we are at all?" JaeWon walked even faster.
Tony sighed as he hurried after JaeWon. They paused a moment while the guard at HeeJun's door let them in. After a quick bow, the two rushed to HeeJun's bedside.
WooHyuk looked up at them in surprise. "What are you two doing here? I thought you were going to stay at the headquarters."
"We needed to talk to HeeJun and you personally. HeeJun. We have trouble." Tony said gravely.
"Trouble, my foot! We have a stuck up bastard with no manners or respect!" JaeWon shouted out.
HeeJun frowned. "What are you talking about."
Tony and JaeWon exchanged looks. At Tony's eyes, JaeWon sat down on a chair next to WooHyuk, silently.
"Sir." Tony said. "The remainder of NRG and SechKies were put together as a new group called OPPA. They're stronger than our former rivals, but not enough to worry about. But their leader..." Tony trailed off.
"What about their leader?" HeeJun asked curiously.
"Their leader is either dumb or obnoxious. He suggested that we get out of his way, unless we wanted to get hurt. That OPPA is taking over Seoul." Tony ended.
HeeJun snorted. "Words come easier than actions." He laughed.
"Sir. This is not a joke. He was serious. I think we need to worry about this." Tony said.
HeeJun nodded solemnly. "Do what ever it takes to get our place back. Who is this leader, anyway?" He asked.
"He's young, sir. Around your age. His name was...Kim SangTeh." Tony answered.
"Wha~~!" HeeJun gasped and turned white.
Three pairs of eyes turned to him and looked at him curiously.
"Did you say Kim.Sang.Teh?" HeeJun asked in short breaths.
Tony nodded catiously.
HeeJun fell back into the pillows and closed his eyes weakly. A moan escaped his lips.
"HeeJun?" JaeWon called. "Is something the matter?"
HeeJun opened his eyes and stared up at the three. "Its a small world." He grinned sarcastically. "Kim SangTeh was the boss of the gang EunJi and I were in a long time ago."
Tony, JaeWon and WooHyuk stood open-mouthedly. HeeJun laughed drily.
"I wanted to forget the bastard. To wipe him out of my life. But I'm glad he's back. I'm going to make him pay back." HeeJun's eyes narrowed dangerously.
"JaeWon! Get Pierre to come here. I need to dress for a meeting with my former boss. WooHyuk? Get OPPA on the line. And Tony? Make arrangements for dinner at our hotel. You know the small one with no people. And surround it." HeeJun threw the covers off the bed.
"HeeJun! You sure you're well enough to..." Tony started, but stopped at HeeJun's firy eyes. There was no doubt that HeeJun was good and ready for what would be happening.
His shoes glistened in the twinkling light of the chandelier that brightened the spacious room. The white suit hung handsomely on his manly frame. The small pearls that trickled down his old fashioned waistcoast shone impressively while the impeccably white jacket was richly adorned with many silver buttons. His hair, dyed a sophisticated black, resembled a lion's mane, wild and neat. A big silver hoop hung on each ear and a thick silver chain hung around his white neck which appeared over the soft folds of the silk frilled collar of his blouse. HeeJun's dark eyebrows arched up ever so slightly as his eyes fell on a dark suited man.
His suit rippled nicely as he glided across the floor to the table near a tall window.
"HeeJun!" SangTeh nervously stood up as HeeJun's white form appeared.
HeeJun bowed low. "Sir." He said, smiling as if mockingly.
SangTeh gulped and wiped the sweat that threatened to fall down his forehead.
He tried to smile. "Sit down HeeJun."
HeeJun bowed and sat, lifting his piercing eyes up at SangTeh. SangTeh sat across from him and tried to act calm.
"Would you like to order something first?" SangTeh asked, not making eye contact.
HeeJun ignored him. "So you are our new rivals." He said.
SangTeh twitched restlessly.
HeeJun laughed loudly. "Who would have known. You and I...rivals."
SangTeh stretched his lips into a fake smile. "Yeah."
HeeJun leaned back in his chair and looked straight at SangTeh. "So...how is it in your new group? Do you treat your men as you use to? And your girls, of course." He asked, his eyes twinkling.
SangTeh's ears turned a bright red as he fumbled with his water glass.
HeeJun laughed nastily. "Your clothes aren't as fine as I expected." He said looking SangTeh up and down. "I thought you would be decked in the most expensive suit you could find. Especially with all the money you probably have. The money...haha...I know well enough where you get that." HeeJun spoke meaningly.
SangTeh's chest heaved and he bit his lip. His fists clenched tightly.
HeeJun's eyes squinted. "Has your fighting gotten any better? Or do you just use your men to do everything for you?" He asked.
SangTeh knocked over his water glass as he stood up suddenly. "Moon HeeJun! If I were you..." He yelled, ignoring the stares.
HeeJun looked up at him without flinching. "I you were me, you would already be dead. The way you treated me, if I wasn't me, I would have left you." HeeJun spoke in a cold voice.
Smoke seemed to seep out of SangTeh's ears as he tried to calm himself. He smiled hurriedly. "HeeJun...my man....Hey. What are you talking about? We were best buddies! Best pals."
HeeJun laughed tauntingly. "Pals? SangTeh. Don't lie."
SangTeh's lips pinched together tightly. "HeeJun. You know me. I love you like a brother!"
"A good thing you don't have anymore brothers." HeeJun swallowed a gulp of water.
SangTeh sank down in his chair weakly.
"HeeJun. What do you want?" SangTeh asked in a low voice.
"Want?" HeeJun raised his eyebrows. "Everything. Everything you took away from me."
SangTeh looked away and sighed. "HeeJun that was then. What can I do for you now?"
"Apologize. Get down on your knees and beg forgiveness to me and......EunJi." HeeJun said.
"EunJi? Is she OK?" SangTeh hung his head and blinked the tears away.
"What the hell does that have to do with you!!" HeeJun roared. At the stares of the people in the restaurant, HeeJun lowered his voice. "What do you care? You just tell her what really happened. You tell her the truth and then get out of this world."
"HeeJun. I..." SangTeh started in a weak voice.
"SangTeh." HeeJun's voice was dangerous. "Do you even know how much you hurt her? How much she suffered?"
A pained expression flashed on SangTeh's face. His shoulders slumped.
"Coward. You useless piece of..." HeeJun looked up. "You know, I trusted you. I served you so well. I lent you money. I fought instead of you. I gave up EunJi for you. I was loyal to you even after you betrayed me. You don't know how much it hurt. To see her eyes. To see your eyes." HeeJun choked up.
"HeeJun. I was drunk then." SangTeh said softly.
HeeJun's face filled with a look of exasperation. "You bastard. I'll get you back. I give you my word, I'll get you back." He murmured as he pushed back his chair.
He turned out toward the entrance, but stopped and turned back. "You lift a finger against our group again, and you'll pay." HeeJun snarled.
SangTeh leaned back weakly, his eyes closed in obvious pain. He motioned to the waiter to bring him a drink. He needed something to ease himself.
SangTeh picked up his cellular phone. "MyungHoon? Call off the men...for now."
HeeJun threw off his clothes and sank into bed. The world whirled around him.
A knock sounded at the door followed by WooHyuk. "HeeJun. You okay?" He asked worriedly.
HeeJun nodded. "You won't have to worry about OPPA for awhile. I have it under control."
WooHyuk sat in the chair next to the bed. "What happened?"
"Nothing. We just talked." HeeJun said, smiling to himself.
WooHyuk didn't answer, but waited. HeeJun soon spoke again.
"WooHyuk? You don't know exactly how Mr. Suman found me, right?" HeeJun sighed. "I...my sister. SangTeh, the leader of OPPA, was in love with her. Well, more than that, he wanted her. But she hated him. He blew his top one day and killed the guy she was going out with, also one of our rivals. Actually, I didn't like the way she was going with a rival, and had done everything in my power to get her to go to my beloved leader. She wouldn't, and SangTeh got angry and drunk. EunJi and the rival were at a club, SangTeh got me...he got me to drug EunJi, lightly, of course. And he killed the other guy. The knife he used was the first thing EunJi saw when she woke up. The bloody knife in her hand and a dead man next to her. I was there when she screamed. Oh WooHyuk! You can't imagine how she screamed." HeeJun held his head in sorrow of the memory.
"She was in absolute terror and ran. I tried to follow her, but SangTeh caught me. He was awake then, and he made me promise not to tell anyone he had killed the man. I promised. Like a fool, I promised. The cops were thick, the dead man was the son of a senator, and SangTeh got scared. He went and squealed to the cops that I was the killer and then fled. I got caught and I pleaded guilty. I spent months in the poorhouse until Mr.Suman bailed me out. And then the rest is how you know it." HeeJun ended. He looked up into WooHyuk's shocked face.
WooHyuk stared numbly. "So...EunJi never killed...anyone?" He finally asked.
HeeJun nodded. "She thinks she did. I don't know how to tell her she didn't. I did...once, but she wouldn't believe me. She thought I was trying to comfort her." HeeJun sighed.
WooHyuk’s heart pounded. "So no one...knows the truth. Not even her? Not even KangTa?"
HeeJun nodded again. WooHyuk felt the world do a backflip. So EunJi wasn't a killer. No wonder the whole story never made sense. No wonder he couldn't bring himself to ever believe it. WooHyuk smiled to himself.
HeeJun looked at him curiously. "Why the smile?"
"I'm just relieved that she's not...well you know, that she never really ended anyone's life." WooHyuk explained.
HeeJun laughed. "She finished off SungHoon."
WooHyuk snorted. "He would've died anyway. We put poison in the sleeping powder."
HeeJun laughed again. "Whatever." His face turned serious again. "WooHyuk? What do you think I should do? Should I get SangTeh to confess in front of EunJi? That past is eating away at her. She needs to know the truth. But seeing SangTeh again..." His brow creased.
WooHyuk looked thoughtful. "Find KangTa first. She needs him most."
WooHyuk felt his heart squeeze, but swallowed the feeling...she needed him.
SangTeh paced until the dark red carpet seemed to have worn into a path.
He muttered under his breath the whole time cursing his past, HeeJun, EunJi and the whole damn world in general. He sighed, He had liked EunJi...a lot. Too much.
She had been so headstrong and sweet and...pure! So unlike the girls at the clubs. He had...he had killed that man. It had felt so good then, seeing the man that had been in the place he had wanted to be bleed to death.
He was drunk crazy so he had laughed and thought of killing her along with him. But even in her sleep she was smiling...tauntingly at him. He had felt a hot surge of revenge and had plunged the knife into her hand.
A day later, when he came to his senses, he almost lost it. He had asked his loyal servant and best friend, HeeJun, to cover for him just a little while until he got the money for bail. He had taken HeeJun's every penny..."for bail", and then he had run.
SangTeh slammed down the glass of wine. He watched the red juice and crystal glass smash into smithereens. HeeJun just needed to say a word to turn all his own men, as well as H.O.T against him. He just needed to tell the men of OPPA how he had deserted his own man, and stole from him to end SangTeh's life. HeeJun had every reason to tell the truth to the court and turn all his lawyer buddies and cops. HeeJun needed just to lift a finger to make SangTeh crumble. If HeeJun had been a street nothing, SangTeh wouldn't be worried. It would be his word against HeeJun's. But HeeJun was the top of the most respected underground group in Korea. His word was law.
HeeJun knew everything, and he would do everything. HeeJun could talk about anything. The 10 Billion that SangTeh had stolen, the death that SangTeh had done, the forgery, the tricks, the lies.... SangTeh knew HeeJun and HeeJun would never ever forgive. If it were only about himself, it would be a different thing. But SangTeh had hurt HeeJun's most precious thing. His sister.
SangTeh felt the sharp pieces of glass screw into his hand. His eyes were full of determination. There was only one way to stop HeeJun. The best way.
His lips stretched into a smile as he pressed a button on the phone.
"MyungHoon? Get the hell in here. I want Moon HeeJun....dead."
WooHyuk's steady hands lifted EunJi out of bed. Her bandage had been removed the other day, leaving only a small sign of the bullet hole.
She was much recovered now, no more fevers and restless nights. Only a little weak from the loss of blood. She clung closely to WooHyuk.
"WooHyuk?" She asked. "Where are we going?"
WooHyuk smiled at her gently. "To KangTa." He answered.
EunJi's eyes grew wide. "What? KangTa?" She gasped.
WooHyuk felt his eyes fill at her happiness. "Yes KangTa."
EunJi squirmed out of WooHyuk's arms and shook him. "Where is he? Where is KangTa?" She breathed out.
WooHyuk steadied her. "Not yet, sweetie. Not just yet. He'll be here soon."
EunJi nodded sorrowfully. "Where is he?"
WooHyuk lifted EunJi again. "Your brother went to find him, himself. You trust HeeJun, don't you?"
EunJi's eyes filled with joy and relief. "HeeJun! Oh he'll find KangTa! I know he will!"
WooHyuk looked down at the happy face. He smiled to himself. Love was so sweet. WooHyuk could only feel the happiness of love now. He knew EunJi couldn't love him, but he didn't care. Loving her himself was all he needed.
HeeJun's shoulders sank in lost hope as one by one, the sources that had been sai
