"Hey Christian"
Dec. 17, 1999

Hey Christian
How does the sun look today?
Have you confronted those holy vultures
That hover over the fields?
And what have they told you about picking the daisies?

Hey Christian
What's your life like today?
Tell me some stories
Of life far away...

And hey Christian
What have you praised today?
Have you told yourself how good you look
In an overrated way?
Have you ever looked through the glass
To stare at the animal within?

Hey Christian--
I think I know you
From a past life;
You didn't know what you wanted then;
I suppose you do now;

Why do you hide magic
In your eyes?
Don't you think I see it with mine?
And why must you always
Speak of what's above?
Does it give you a better sense of love?

What's this you say?
There's a demon in my soul?
How did this come about--
How did I stoop so low?

Oh help me, Christian,
For I think I've floated astray;
I seek the light you speak of
But fear I'll be pushed away;

So many years
I've spent in error,
Dizzied by winding roads;
Just once again
I'd like to be in your shoes,
To find out what you know;

Look at these shoes,
All tattered and torn;
I've yet to see any
So weary and worn;
But they've taken me places
You'd namely call hell
And they've taken me back to
That booming church bell;
But their souls are wearing thin;
I fear upcoming miles--
Just once I'd like to find a home
And erase my religious files;

Hey Christian
How does the sun shine today?
Would you put in a good
Word for me
As I walk the other way?

Some day in the field, we'll meet again;
We'll run barefoot through
Bone-freezing snow
And leave the daisies
Where they grow;

But until then,
I'll spur on these shoes
To finish my walk on Earth,
You see, I've got some business here
I should attend to first;

Oh, and Christian...
I pity you when you pity me--
Go off, be free, you saint;
For a rich one I'm not, on my tower of sin,
But somehow a poor one I ain't~
