I am a kid at heart, and also a gradfather, so it's not surprising that I was captivated by Ken and Joan's Book of Bugs.

Bugs the like of which I've never seen,
Across the screen they strut and preen,
With silly rhymes to delight your kid,
                Better than you ever did.

Children won't learn much about the biology of insects when they look at pictures like the Blind Date Bug or the Couch Potato Worm. Just the same, the book is every bit as educational as for example Dr Seuss's delightful books of nonsense. It will capture the imagination of a reluctant novice reader, and could be the first step towards a lasting love of books.

Also, it can be the first primer in being an internet user. The Book of Bugs is an e-book. The copy supplied to me was in HTML format. That is to say, it was readable by browsers, the same kinds of program that read web pages. In no time at all, a child will whizz around within the book, not even realising that s/he is being taught useful 21st Century skills.

Joan James and Ken Seamon are married and live in Melbourne with their two Russian Blue Cats. They are also authors and illustrators of Michael Manley and the Magic Milking Machine, and Michael Manley Meets a Mummy, both published by Bookmice.
