SANDY. 'Little Orphan Annie' is still pretty much the high-adventure girl strip it was, when created by Harold Grey in 1924. An Airedale-Collie admixture, Sandy was herself an orphan, or atleast stray

She was also the victim of ritual teasing + abuse, until rescued by Annie. The two have been inseparable ever since

Sandy doesn't speak, she says 'Arf!'. Not 'Whoof!' or even 'Bow-Wow!', just 'Arf!'. And for 75 years, that's been just fine

Grey died in 1968 + the strip's current artist, Leonard Starr renders his characters a little differently: they have eyeballs
