The
art of using feathers as a decoration for hatches has a long tradition
among anglers. The great variety of feathers is primarily used for the
colorful wings of the small feather creatures.

Fishing
flies come in all different shapes, styles and colors. The flies are specialized
to allure certain kinds of fish or are geared towards special water conditions
like salt- or freshwater.
|
A
whole museum has devoted its location to the art of fly fishing. It is
based in Manchester, Vermont and exhibits a large collection of historic
flies as well as records of the evolution of fly fishing as a modern sport.
|
While
most flies carry descriptive names, some artists give special names to
their fly creatures. The little ones are called "Quigleys Cripple",
"Super Pillow" or "Hula Flies". Some angler clubs
hold usually annual championships to see which fly catches the largest
fish to determine who is the best fly maker.

There
are many classes held to train novice anglers how to create their own
flies and worms. The students are taught how to tie their own flies in
addition to the standard angler repertoire of rod training and casting
styles.
|
There
are many different styles of flies and many patterns ranging from simple
to very complicated structures of elaborate masterpieces. Flies are divided
into various fishing styles like dry flies, nymphs and wets, freshwater
or saltwater patterns, others are called steelheads, streamers, terrestrials
or simply worms.
|
A great variety of fly adorned hatches can be bought in specialized shops. You can choose between ready-made fly boxes and diverse materials for making your own. The creativity of a skilled fly artist knows no limits. No two flies look the same. Each fly has its own distinctive appearance, manner and abilities. |

Many
idyllic streams have become popular fly fishing reservoirs. Fly anglers
are often devoted lovers of mother nature and pay for expensive trips
into far away countries just to be able to fish in unspoiled nature. Unfortunately
many streams suffer from industrial outlet and over-fishing. The fly fishing
industry will have to work closely with environmentalists to ensure the
sport´s future.

Not
only feathers are used to lure fish. Also materials like animal hair,
beads, cork and tinsel are used in conjunction with feathers to decorate
the hatch or are used as the body of a fly.
|
The
striving fly fishing industry makes growing use of the internet´s
marketing and customer service strategies. Many fly shops already offer
their wide range of products via the internet. And if you do not watn
to buy flies, you can still find valuable information on the interesting
sport of fly fishing.
