NGEL
WINGS
|
Little Webmistress Angel |
Today
we are used to see angels almost everywhere. They appear as if by magic
in our homes on TV, they pop up on magazin covers or dance on stage in
a play. Many
of them are seductive young women wearing beautiful feather wings. Who
would not want to be like them? But beside those delusional pictures the
believe in angels has always been a very personal one.
|
|
While nowadays everyone of us can hold a different view on the subject of angels, in the past it was the church who dictated how the heavenly messenger had to look like. The winged helpers were portrayed in hundreds of religious pictures, statuettes and sculptures. Most of these personifications were based on descriptions found in the Bible. Later those ideas began to mix with the artists´ own ideas as well as the general opinion of the particular epoch. |
||
"The
Proclamation of Cortona" by Beato Angelico is only one of many pictures
by this artist devoted to angels.

A
stone angel sculpture by an unknown master between 1270 and 1280 BC.
|
|
Even more contemporary artists have chosen angels as their favorite objects. Again most of the heavenly messengers are portrayed as having huge feather wings. Sometimes they are even sprouting more than one pair. |
||
To
William Blake (1757 - 1827) the archangels were a symbol of power and
energy. Blake was guided by angels and was even instructed to paint by
them.
|
"Ascent
of the Blessed" by Hieronymus Bosch, showing angels of light at a
tunnel after death.
|
But
not just angels are portrayed as sprouting wings. In this canvas picture
by Gianfilippo Usellini called "The Big Battlefield" from 1950
the topic of a fight between angels and devils has been picked up. Here
also the devils, embodiment of evil, are winged just like their opposing
angelic fighters.
|
Wings are viewed as symbols of freedom, purity and hope in life after physical death. This symbol can be found everywhere round the globe and also in cultures in Turkey, Mongolia and India too. On the right you can see the epitome of purity and beauty - a ballet angel from "Angles Flight". |
Today
it is common use to dress small children as angels for various occasions.
Like many products you can find a multitude of online shops where you
can buy your favorite wings.
|
|
Dolls clothes have always imitated real wardrobe. Thus the toy industrie has picked up this trend and offers winged Barbies and other dolls. Winged Barbies can be bought at the Mattel homepage. |
