I agree, some well-written thoughts on this page. Also think the Marc could spark a few riots as he apparently has the knack! But, I doubt too many people actually make a "life's work" out of Dark Shadows. They may simply be stating some strong feelings bout something they at least felt was being unfairly raked over the "hot coals" as well. That would hardly qualify them as "psychos, loonies, emotional cripples, or psychiatric cases". For one claiming to be above all that ("friend") you have quite a li tle selection of insults yourself. But I'm sure you checked out all the cases prior to making your diagnosis.

Greg, I read your heartfelt post on alt.tv.dark_shadows. That's what drew me to your very well written article on Dark Shadows, among others. This site is a treasure trove of good reading, and I have bookmarked it. To the point, please do not allow the psychos on that newsgroup or anyone else to dishearten you or make you feel as though you are wrong. Not everyone believes DS is a "holy grail." Not everyone takes being a fan of the show as a life's work. Some of us erely like that show and watch it whenever we please to do so. Those above-mentioned psychos always seem to take that as some kind of invitation to "convert" the "misguided one" by main force of insult and degradation, or to castigate the unbeliever over ot coals, with hot pincers of accusation. Everything is capable of attracting a loonie element. It is unfortunate that such emotional cripples and psychiatric cases give more moderate kinds of fans a very bad name -- "dangerous nut" comes to mind as the first epithet hurled in the direction of in ocent people who merely like a show. All the truly dangerous nuts that came before give the public the very rightful impression all fans need intensive psychiatric treatment. I hate being painted with that brush because I like a television show, one among many. That is why I dislike and largely avoid the dangerous crazies who spend their days posting garbage on alt.tv.dark_shadows. I'm glad at least one person can poke harmless fun at this show, give me a fine read and a good giggle, and most of all, sees the loonies for what they are.

i watch dark shadows monday to friday like clockwork and throughly enjoy it but seriously folks it IS only a tv show albeit one with quite the following after all this time. it's fun entertainment and not high intellect. i found marc's article (as well s his others) about it as enjoyable as i do my cheesy campy favorite show and can't see why anyone would get so worked up over the article.

I too was disturbed by the DS article...On Dark Shadows, when I see actors forget their lines or the sets falling down, or actors missing cues, I don't see bad I acting. I do see a low budget show that was under-rehearsed. IMHO you have to look at the ent re picture. To *me* the fact that these actors filmed a different show 5 days a week, with only the morning and early afternoon to rehearse, is just impressive and is a testament to their skill. As any television reference book will tell you, in the 60s and 70s alot of shows were taped "live on tape" meaning the show was not aired live--but that the cameras did not stop. Editing was not commonly available either-- the equipment was much too expensive. I don't know if the writer of the article has ever one a play, but you get weeks to memorize the script. And on films and television nowadays you get a long time to rehearse and the cameras can stop and start again. On Dark Shadows the actors got their revised scripts at 8 AM and they taped around 3 tha afternoon. They also had to deal with special effects (a first for a soap) and outlandish costumes, not to mention the weird plots. If they missed up, too bad---it went on the air. So it's easy to say that today's soaps & movies have good actors, when we see a polished performance every time. Who knows how long it took a "good actor" to get their lines right? Stepping off my soap box. :-)
