Among contemporary poets, he considers
W.S. Merwin, Frank Stanford,
C.D. Wright, Forrest Gander and Frank O'Hara particular favorites, and he admires William Blake, Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Rainer Maria Rilke,
Federico Garcia Lorca, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton among earlier poets.
Describing his tastes in poetry, Long says, "I am not big on Language Poetry, except for Creeley. I like postmodern and
formalist poets in general."
