Geoffrey Lavelle (luv ELL), Poet
Lavelle lives at 3055 Carlsen Street, Oakland, California 94602. His phone number is (510) 531-4157, his e.mail address tufu2@pacbell.net.
Lavelle has had articles and poems in O!!Zone and other magazines. His chapbook, An Expatriate's Sketchbook, was published by Harry Burrus. His work has drawn a few comments in the small and micro presses, but nothing extensive; on the net, Glossolalia reviewed An Expatriate's Sketchbook.
Lavelle has a website, too. There you will find samples of Nick Van Borst's poetry, Van Borst being high on Lavelle's list of contemporary poets who are important to him. Others on that list are
Harry Burrus,
Sekou Karanja,
Lawrance Ferlinghetti,
Allen Ginsberg and
Frank O'Hara (dead but still contemporary)--and
too many others to mention. About poets of the past, he says, "I love all the classics and turn-of-the-twentieth-century poets, but I'd like to call attention to a Chinese poet of the middle Tang dynasty, Tu Fu. He has many translators.
I recommend Ken Rexroth and David Hinton."
He considers himself "open to anything" as a reader of poetry. "I'm most moved by an honest expression of
an artist's humanity in the face of a horrible history and an
indifferent universe," he says.
