Bazooka Joe, the patch-eyed star of the comic that wraps every piece of Bazooka bubble gum, turns 50 this year. Others nearing the big 5-0 may be amazed to learn that Joe hasn't aged a day since 1953. If anything, he looks younger.
The odd 1930s newsboy look he sported until the early 1980s has been updated: The street-wise smart aleck now sports a skateboard and wears his baseball cap backward. Pal Mort still wears a turtleneck pulled up to this nose, but he's grown his hair into a big red 'fro.
To commemorate Bazooka Joe's 50th birthday, Topps Confections, the bubblegum's maker, has given Bazooka Bubble Gum's packaging its own makeover. In addition, Topps will give some lucky Bazooka Bubble Gum buyer a grand prize of $50,000. The contest runs through July 15, 2004. Learn more online at www.bazookajoe.com or phone 800-896-2820.
