Trip to Marikina

Dear Friends Forever,

. . .

Update on Eddie -  Accdg. to Arlette, he is doing fine.  Dalawang beses na
raw namamasyal sa mall na malapit sa Marikina.  Going out and doing your
normal thing is really encouraged by the doctors.  At least, we can say
that he is really improving.  The first time is always the most difficult
becuase you become dizzy with so many people around you.  That is why you
have to do it to make you adjust again to normal living.  His arrhythmia is
OK na raw.  Wala na sigurong extra beat when he is with Arlette. Hindi na
natataranta ang puso niya kay Arlette.

So long and take care, all of you.

Love,
Ruth

Subject: The Power of Prayer

Hey Guys (and Gals, of course)

Can we all use this power to help Arlette Aquino-Umali (and Eddie!)
overcome! This can be more powerful than any financial assistance...

                            THE EVERLASTING ARMS

When the doctor told me that my precious six-week-old son, Paul,
was
blind, I went into shock. I tried to pray but for some reason I couldn't.

Hours passed and I still could not form words into prayer.
Meanwhile, news of my baby's disability spread among our family, friends
and
church congregation. An army of prayer warriors carried their concern for
Paul, my husband and me to the Lord.

Two days later, while I was bathing Paul, something almost
mystically happened. Ever so quietly and gently I was reminded of the Bible
verse "...and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deuteronomy 33:27). I
had the distinct feeling of being buoyed up, supported. And my depression
began to lift.

Paul is an adult now. Though legally blind, he went to college and
is employed; he can read with special magnifying glasses.

I discovered on that day long ago that even when you yourself
cannot pray, the prayers of others can intercede for you. That barrage of
prayers didn't change Paul's problem, but it changed me. Ever since, in
good
times and in bad, I've been sustained by the knowledge of His everlasting
arms.

You will provide the strength I need.
You will gladden my thoughts with hope.
You will bring the joy of a new day."

dear manny,

finally managed to drop by ed umali at makati med yesterday afternoon.
he was in good spirits and was actually sitting down being his usual
jolly self. from what happened to him, it may not be a bad idea for the
rest of us to get our regular check-ups. this is something i myself
avoid unless made mandatory by management. ed was talking about changing
his lifestyle after this --- cutting down on the fats and the alcohol
and the late nights, etc. on the other hand, ed is 2 or 3 years older
than me, so maybe i still a bit of time left. except that he was saying
that one of the bypass patients operated on about the same time as he
was barely 20 years old.
anyway, ed's case showed again how special it is to be a prepian. we
do take care of our own, somehow. the response to the plight of the late
miss cruz and now with ed is so heartwarming. we may not have been in
touch with each other for 30 years after high school, but when we did
decide to get togther again, we certainly got together in more ways than
one. makes us feel like we belong to one family.
ed will probably be out of makati med by today or tomorrow. i
suggest that we keep in close touch and see how we can be of help to him
and arlette.

Subject: Visited Eddie Umali at MMC

with Ruth Flores last Saturday. He looks okay. However, meron siyang ubo
saka arrythmia (heart skipping a beat), baka naman in-love lang talaga. May
mahaba siyang tahi sa left arm where they harvested the artery for the
triple bypass that he underwent.

Eddie's sense of humor is intact. Sabi niya, he was hoping that the incision
on his chest would from  a letter 'S', para Superman, kaso, letter 'D' pala,
kaya ayun, Darna!

Regarding the decision na isugal na lang ang buhay, tinanong daw siya ng
friend niya kung tumama na ba siya sa Lotto or sa Sweepstakes. E hindi pa!
Kaya wala raw siyang karapatang buhay niya ang isugal this time!

Sabi ko kay Eddie, ang problemahin lang niya ay ang magpagaling.

I gave Arlette a xerox copy of Mila's article about our reunion. I showed
Eddie their Prep 66 Annual while Ruth and Arlette discussed outside the room
(limited visitors sa telemetry).

We did not stay long because of the color coding but were able to interact
with some of their relatives, too.

Ana B. Urbina

Dear Jojo & Rudy.

. . .

As for Eddie and Arlette.... You must have read my e-mail by now.  This
afternoon, Ana and I went to see them.  They had some relatives visiting at
the hospital.  As we were talking, suddenly, Arlette approached her aunt,
started laughing and then broke down.  Gusto ko na ring umiyak, kaya lang
kausap ko si Eddie. May problem na naman siya.  He developed arrhythmia (
iwon't spell check anymore cause I'm sleepy).  We continued talking as if
nothing was happening between Arlette and her aunt, kasi parang ayokong
makita si Eddie na bumigay rin, but he kept on looking at Arlette.  Pero
sandali lang naman ito and Arlette started acting herself again. Medyo
kabado nga ako pag ganito na.   Hindi kami maka-imik ni Ana.  Then I got
the chance to bring her out in the corridor and told her that I have
written to our classmates and hope that  she and Eddie won't mind it.  We
are just trying to help.  She is very grateful for this gesture.  Since I
am sending all Prep 65 a copy of this, please don't feel pressured by my or
Ana's accounts about them.  To us, it is an outlet to express our feelings
that are just too difficult to keep to ourselves lest we burst into tears
also.

I have received two pledges already.  Thank you very much.   Some of us
here have given directly to her. But now I suggest we give it on a lump sum
to Arlette when they are about to be discharged. However, to lighten her
burden and with your pemission, may I tell her about your pledges  so that
she can at least count on this na. To those who made pledges, I will
contact you by phone as soon as I can.

Let's keep praying for good health for everyone.

Love to all,

Ruth

Subject: Arlette and Eddie Umali

Dear Friends Forever (Prep '65),

Ana's decision to tell all about Arlette and Eddie may or may not be
welcome to all.  But I felt something must be done about the situation.

This morning, I was able to visit Eddie at Makati Medical Center.  Arlette
was there, as expected, watching and taking care of her husband, with a
mask on her face because  she had cough and colds.  Eddie said he had
triple bypass and that he is OK now but he developed pneumonia after the
operation.  From my own experience as a bypass veteran (Feb.7, 1997), I
know that this is not good at all (luckily, I didn't get it then).  This
will definitely affect his recuperation.  But I know that the team of
doctors of the Heart Foundation of Makati Med headed by Dr. Jorge Garcia of
Washington D.C., are the best, and hopefully, they will be able to arrest
this in Eddie's case. I really made it a point to come as early as I could
to give moral support to Eddie and Arlette as well.  I would have gone
sooner had I learned about it earlier. I want Eddie to call me anytime to
ask about the pains he will be experiencing, so that I can help assuage his
fears. (I found talking to  a bypass vet, next to God in my prayers, very
helpful, therapeutic and  really encouraging.)  I guess I am just trying to
emulate what some of our classmates, my other friends,  and relatives did
when I was in the same bed.  I know how much it meant to me and my family
during those days. Their visits, prayers, telephone calls, cards and
flowers, before and after the operation, are still fresh in my memory. I
am, and will forever be, very grateful to all  of them, specially to Ana's
and Tessie H's son's  blood donations, which must be on stand by , just in
case I would need it.  Again, I was lucky enough not to need any
transfusion.  Eddie and Arlette need our moral support.  Please include
them in your prayers. When we are many who knock at His door, the Good Lord
will listen.

I knew from reading Class '66 e-mails b/w Manny Canillas and Benjie
Santillan that the family also needs some financial help. I took the
courage to ask Arlette's permission to write about this to our batch  '65.
After all, even if Eddie belongs to '66, Arlette has been one of us,
especially  with the girls during our Girl Scouting days.  And so with her
permission, albeit with some hesitation, iyakan, and kahihiyan on her part,
I am writing to you.  Eddie, as the patient, is in trouble.  But Arlette,
as the other half, is more problematic.  She is the one bearing  all the
burden of taking care of Eddie, encouraging him to get well and not to
worry, and doing everything she could to raise funds.  ( I heard that
Eddie's primary concern  before and after the operation is how they are
going to pay.) Their package hospital bill for the bypass is about
P650,000.  But Eddie was hospitalized before the operation and had already
incurred a lot of expenses.  From experience also, the final bill will be
higher than the package deal  (which they will tell you in the end that
the package amount  is just an indicative figure). Their insurance is only
up to P200,000, P50,000 of which they have already used up.   Arlette has
converted some of her vacation leaves into cash. She is also selling some
of her jewelry. They do not have any savings left because they are helping
their families also. Any help from us will be most appreciated by the
family. Please remember that I was the one who insisted that I write you
all about this, for whatever worth this may bring about.  Nahihiya  talaga
si Arlette.  At I am sure si Eddie rin, kahit hindi siya ang kinausap ko.

You may think that I am too forward in spearheading this (again?). But for
the love of a classmate, I will do it again and again.  After all, I think
of all of you as more than classmates but friends forever. Kulang na lang
mag-blood compact tayo sa samahan.
O sigue na, tumigil na kayo ng iyak.

Love to all,

Ruth

Hi, folks!
This is an e-mail train of prep66 about Eddie Umali. I forwarded it to Ruth Flores when she asked me if I think it is okay kung mag-abot siya kay Arlette pagdalaw niya sa Makati Medical Center. Sabi ko oo, kasi nabasa ko na nga dito sa prep66 info na they need help.
Ruth says I should broadcast this to you, apat na taon din naman daw nating kasama si Arlette, plus active girl scouts ang most of the girls, at si Arlette ang leader, di ba nga?
I hesitated to broadcast, because Pat said baka mapahiya sina Arlette at Eddie.
Pero mukhang tama si Ruth, so here it is.

Perhaps, for funds coming abroad,  it would be more convenient if we just send it

where it's coming from. such as "Prep 66 is depositing $_____  into your account..

Don't worry about  your messages to  Ed and Arlette. I'm sure that they will know of

As for the mechanics of  helping Ed from there, Butch and Fred had already started
something. Maybe you can send it to Butch.  The last time out, he was exemplary
in his fund drive for Ms.Cruz. When, he was not getting any response from the emails, he
started faxing and calling our classmate there and then gave us an accounting of all
contributions.  I will have to ask Ana to get Arlette's bank account number so Butch
can send it directly there.

dear manny,

it's amazing and very touching to know (i actually had goose pimples when i
read the emails) what you and the others (benjie, ray, pat & frank, etc.)
have done to make all these happen on ed's behalf.

joe and i would like to contribute $100 and more.  but since we don't have
the cash, here's how i plan to generate it:  i'm the manager of my
artist/sculptor brother rafael ("paeng") de jesus, jr., here in new york
(his manager in manila is emily tongco-abonal c/o plusphilonline.com).  in
the history of the art association of the philippines (aap), he is the only
2-time first prize winner of the annual national art competitions that they
sponsor.  he joined the competitions twice only (the 2nd was 2 years ago
when he went home to visit being away for 10 years).  he has been featured
in philippine newspapers like bulletin, etc., and the philippine art
magazine "chimera".  he has had several art exhibits in manila, 2 exhibits
in soho, new york, and the philippine center on fifth avenue, new york.  we
are in the process of setting up his website over the internet so
prospective buyers can get a glimpse of his art and his resume.  one of his
award-winning paintings is in the lobby of far east bank in makati, and the
other in the office of david sycip, jr. (rizal banking corporation).  his
collectors include the asian development bank, planters products, erlanger
commercial corp. (hong kong), kim il sung (former president of south
korea), roman cruz, jaime c. laya, rita kalaw ledesma (of metropolitan
museum of the philippines), rey orosa, rey david, topacio berenguer
interiors, lor calma, joe calma (interior designers), etc.

i will be going home first week of sept to visit my 91-year-old mom (she's
also in the hospital for pneumonia; thank god hindi naman serious; she'll
be out in a few days).  i will be bringing a lot of my brother's paintings.
his prices range from $50 to $2000.  the first $100 out of the proceeds
from the sale of any paintings to any prepian(s) will go to ed's account.
and therafter, 10% of sale of all paintings to any prepian(s) .

i will provide all the info (website, email addressess, ph/fax nos., etc.)
as soon as the website is established.

good luck and thanks a lot again for your concern all your fruitful efforts.

cheers,

       manny,

just called up rm.431 and there seems to be no ed u., prep 66,
nor arlette a., prep 65, rejoicing over yonder. gotta tell our ed it's not
yet the time to be engaged in physically-taxing intimacies with a prep 65
granmomma. so where, oh where do i visit him tomorrow a.m.?

ray was supposed to drop by the house to deposit his k's before
he flies to germany, unless you got to him first. anyway, i dunned jerry b.
for another 10k after he showed me how he can handle poder in the palace by
putting me on the jalopy F-27 presidential flight which almost did not make
it to vigan, ilocos sur because of a defective landing gear -- but that is
another story.

talked to ed a few minutes before he was wheeled to the o.r. on
my way to the airport; shared with him a prayer which carried me thru that
F-27 flight of another story.

way to go, ed and arlette, will always pray for you and all!!!

                                                 love you,

Subject: Prayers for Ed

Dear Manny,
Pls let Ed know that we are praying for his speedy recovery. I'm pretty
sure he is in very good hands since the surgeon must be Jorge Garcia . I
just came back again from Manila myself   because of Tatay. Ed is lucky
that they caught  it in time and that Dr. Garcia is in town. I will
definitely include him in my prayers.

I also bumped into Jerry Barican in one of the restaurants by Dewey Blvd
. Cora Santos was also there in Manila (she is based in Australia) and
was visiting her Dad also. What I did was to give her your e-mail
address, and she'll be the one to contact you when she goes back home. I
did not contact you anymore as I had my hands full shuttling from one
doctor to another, one hospital to another. Let Ed know how lucky he is
-as some people are not operable because of their age, and  or
complications to other organs of the body .

. . .

This is all for now, Manny-thanks again for getting us all connected.

 dear manny,
so sorry i was out when you called  the office earlier today.  monday is
always a day for conferences and this noon i also managed to get away
for a while and keep arlette and pat company at the makati med while ed
was undergoing surgery.  pat who just came home reported that ed's
operation seems to have been successful and he was wheeled out of OR to
the ICU at around 7 pm.  he will be there for the next two days which is
the most critical period after a major surgery.
 . . .
 thank you and best regards.

(see Pat's message at end of this email)

Is there anybody else who can go with Benjie, Boyet and me to visit Ed
on Sunday around 5:00 pm?

From there we can go to Intramuros to help Josie celebrate her daughter's birthday.

Jerry! be sure to be there at Intramuros. Jess has a lot of questions and
EQ has a lot of chismis (mainly about you, I think. :-)

Boo!  Josie's been trying to get in touch with you.  Can you make it too?

Manny

dear manny,

arlette informed me this morning that eddie will undergo a quintuple
heart bypass early monday morning, june 21 at the makati medical
center.  he was brought there last thursday after complaining of back
pains which started in angeles, pampanga last week and which turned out
to be a heart attack.  he was also confined for a day or two in angeles
and was rushed back to manila after that.

he is now confined at rm 431 and arlette would like you to inform the
rest of your classmates and also wish that you could form a prayer
brigade of some sort for a successful operation and speedy recovery.
i hope you and some classmates will find time to visit him this weekend
to lend eddie and the rest of the family morale support. he needs
encouragement as up to this time he is not convinced that he should
undergo such an operation considering that it is going to cost them a
lot and there is so little time to prepare.  franklin and i will try to
visit them tomorrow or probably late this afternoon.  our weekend
schedule is very tight and the car ban is not helping us either.
bahala ka na, manny and thanks so much.
