In His Own Words: Francisco Dy III

Francisco Dy III sent this update about himself to Mila, our webmaster.

CAREER
I left the Philippines in 1971 after passing the Board Exams for Civil
Engineers to pursue a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering at the
University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.  Rory Asperilla was also
there to do her Master's Degree in English.  I got my MS degree in early
1973 and returned to Manila to look for a job.  No luck as a result of
economic downturn after martial law was declared in late 1972.

In late 1973 I responded to a job ad in one of the local papers for
engineers to work in Singapore.  I started work in Singapore in January
1974 as a Civil Engineer at The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA).
After two years at PSA, I decided to get out of engineering and into the
more lucrative business sector.  Not having the requisite training in
accounting, finance, economics, marketing, etc. I decided to go back to
school.  In September 1976 I enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania
(Wharton Graduate School of Business) in Philadelphia.  I got my MBA
(Finance) in 1978.

After Wharton I decided on a career in the financial sector in Asia.  I
started in late 1978 by joining the Hong Kong office of Morgan Guaranty
Trust Company of New York (now called J.P. Morgan).    I was with Morgan
for about 5 years (about a year each in Hong Kong and in New York and 3
years in Singapore).  I did loan syndication, merchant banking,
corporate finance, financial advisory, debt securities underwriting.  In
1983 I left Morgan and joined the Singapore branch of the Union Bank of
Switzerland (UBS), the largest bank in Switzerland.  I was Head of
Banking and Project Finance at UBS Singapore.  I was with UBS Singapore
for over 3 years.  This included a one-year secondment to head office in
Zurich to do project finance and capital markets.  In 1987 I left UBS
Singapore and joined James Capel (Far East) Ltd in Hong Kong in 1987 to
do equities.  (James Capel is a London-based stock broking firm
wholly-owned by The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank).   I did equity research
and corporate finance at James Capel.

In early 1990 I left James Capel in Hong Kong to return to Singapore.  I
joined Temasek Holdings Private Limited to concentrate on private equity
investments. (Temasek is the main investment arm of the Singapore
Government.  It is wholly-owned by the Ministry of Finance and is the
parent company and controlling shareholder of  companies like Singapore
Airlines, Development Bank of Singapore, Keppel Corporation, Singapore
Power, Singapore Telecoms, Neptune Orient Lines, etc.)   I joined
Temasek as a Senior Vice President and headed Temasek's investment
activities in Asia.  In addition to investment work, I also represented
Temasek on the board of directors of some Government-linked companies.
I was with Temasek for 7 years.

In June last year I left Temasek to join a local company as Chief
Financial Officer.  In addition to finance, I also oversee the MIS and
Human Resources Depts and strategic investments overseas.  There is a
very strong push here for life-long learning and for the application of
Information Technology to stay competitive.  So last month I enrolled at
the Institute of Systems Science of the National University of Singapore
for a degree in Master of Technology (Knowledge Engineering).  This is a
2-1/2 year part-time graduate course covering artificial intelligence,
expert systems, neural networks, fuzzy logic, etc.

FAMILY
My wife is Singaporean.  She teaches primary school part-time.  We have
a daughter (15 years old) and a son (12 years old).  Both are in high
school.  Our daughter is in her final year while our boy just started
his first year.  My father still lives in Philam in Quezon City.  My
elder brother is also in Metro-Manila and my two sister overseas - the
younger lives in Denver, Colorado and the older in Geneva, Switzerland.

INTERESTS
The whole family plays golf and tennis.  My hobbies include surfing the
Net and "fixing" my car.  I also have a keen interest in education in
Singapore.  I am a member of the Advisory Committee of the Faculty of
Business Administration of the National University of Singapore and
Vice-Chairman of the Government's Feedback Unit on Education.
