It's going to be one big party for Her Excellency!
Mila's earnest call Elmer's Pakiusap Forever Friends
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 21:00:48 EDT
Nag-meeting kami nina Elmer at Ester kagabi. Sabay na
rin ang blow-out ni
Elmer para sa akin. The suggestion to go to a theme park
as proposed by
Dennis was brought up. The only problem is hati parati
ang araw because
people will be arriving Friday morning and therefore
we have half the day to
do something before the Ms. Saigon show at 8:00p.m. Then,
the next day, half
day na naman because of the Independence Day Ball. Sunday,
some will leave.
So for those who aren't we thought we'd do some shopping.
If people will be
tired and what to take the Sunday "off", those who are
staying till Tuesday
can go for a whole day shopping at Woodbury Commons,
an outlet for over a
hundred stores including designers and other name brand
merchandise stores.
We were deliberating on going to Coney Island (which
comes closest to Dennis'
suggestion or take the Apple Tour of Manhattan or take
visit the Statue of
Liberty or take the Circle Line Cruise for three hours.
The last one will
give everyone the opportunity to catch up on things when
we get tired of
looking at the buildings of Manhattan.

Dear Ana B, and yes, Dear Elmer,
Frist I want to thank you Ana B. for your best wishes
on the Philippine
Reporter's 10th anniversary. Second I want to thank
you Elmer for
responding promptly to my note, and also to answer
your query as why
this "co-conspirator" of yours has been very quiet these
past days.
Yes, the Philippine Reporter celebrated its 10th anniversary
of
publishing with a special issue and a dinner dance last
night -- so I
was so busy helping staff with putting out the anniversary
issue and the
party preparations. It would have been so much
fun if you were there at
the party with us, but given the time/distance/circumstance,
I thought
it would be futile to indulge in wishful thinking.
But during last
night's party, I thought many times about Prep 65 and
how nice it would
be to experience something like our affair with you all
-- that's why
I'm now so excited about our NY Reunion. Anyway,
I just want to let you
know the anniversary issue was published on deadline
time, and the party
(sit-down dinner and dance in a beautiful banquet hall)
was a success --
almost 300 in attendance, including representatives from
the Phil
embassy in Ottawa and the phil consulate general in TOronto
(naisip ko
nga si Ling) the Filipino mayor of Niagara on the lake
(I've already
informed him we may plan our next reunion in his town
-- a very
beautiful place -- dubbed in tourism circles as the prettiest
town in
Canada; he's very kind and has been a wonderful host
to many visting Fil
groups ) representatives of Fil-Can organizations,
friends suporters
and family who have steadfastly rallied behind our paper
through the
years, both in tough and good times.
( I'll scan and e-mail you some
photos of our party-- just to share with you our humble
triumphs and
joys.)
. . .
Elmer, thank you so much for all the coordination you
are doing -- I'm
impressed! --- sorry for being a temporary absentee,
but I was just
having a tough time with our hectic schedule -- but now,
I'm back in
circulation for NY things. First, to confirm the
Misss Saigon and the
fall -- Yes, we are attending!!! And please confirm
asap if our hotel
accomodations are now fine.
This weekend, I will make sure I contact Ed and Tony --
Yes, I'm all for the cruise, and the suggestion of Dennis
that we have
fun in a park -- we did it in LA with Ed, Edith, Daddi
and Hermie,
compliments of Daddie and family. -- it was really fun!!
Hermie and I are ready for a three to five day stay in
the big apple --
we can stay on until the 25th, I guess, depending on
how our Prep 65
plans would go.
Now, I'm ready Elmer for any other assignment you will
give me. Please
don't expel me yet for being an absentee co-conspirator...
WArm regards,
Mila

Hi, folks! This is an update from Elmer about the exciting
New York reunion
(hu, hu, hu, inggit, inggit!)

Hi Ana,
Paki e-mail broadcast naman to the entire Prepian 65 community.
Ikaw lang
ang alam kong may complete and updated e-mail list of
our class. BTW, wala
ka na bang chance na makasama sa NYC? We would definitely
miss you if you
cant make it.
Elmer
<Start of e-mail Broadcast>
New York Spring 1999 New York Update
* The Philippine Community Ball on the 22nd shall be held
at the Grand
Ballroom of the New York Hilton; As of present, there
are 17
Prepians/Spouses/Guests who have signed up and our Consul
General had
already made the necessary reservations (I believe 2
tables so pwede pang
humabol!)
* Most attendees to the Reunion shall be arriving Thursday
or Friday (May
20th or 21st) and leaving the following Sunday or Monday.
As such, the
concentration of activities shall be around that particular
weekend.
* Since not everybody would be seeing Lea Salonga in Miss
Saigon on Friday
evening the 21st, we have decided that only Ling shall
go to see the Miss
Saigon with the theater group, while I can stay with
the rest of the gang
and "PAINT NEW YORK CITY RED (or BLUE to represent the
Prepian logo) THAT
NIGHT". Any suggestions?
* I shall be having dinner with Ling on April 16th, both
to celebrate her
promotion; and, also as important, plan out activities
for the reunion. I
shall give updates on the result of the planning meeting
May 17th or so.
See you in New York.

Asfor my update, yes, Hermie and I are attending the ball
and Miss Saigon.
Please let us know to whom we should address the cheques
for both events --
and how much exactly for Miss Saigon (we know the ball
is $75 each, right?)
Ed de le Rea was in TOronto and Hermie and I met (had
lunch and spent the
afternoon to evening) with him -- and we chatted
about many things, among
them the NY reunion. Yes, he is planning to attend,
but could not be sure
about the date yet, and if Bebeth could make it or not.
I'll call him
again after his business tour so I can confirm his attendance
in Miss
Saigon and the ball. He thinks the hotel in Manhattan
is a good idea.
Tony Aytona is coming -- will attend Miss Saigon, but
not the ball. I'll
call him tonight for further info re hotel, etc.
Francisco says he will try his best to come, most likely
by himself --
He'll be coming from Switzerland where he is overseeing
a project, and
although he's busy with work and further studies in Singapore,
his base,,
he will try to make it to NY.
Efren is sending regrets.
I guess, that's it from my end.
I'll confirm arrival and departure dates, but most likely,
we're arriving
Thursday or Friday, leaving Monday or Tuesday.
Haven't booked our flights
yet.
Will write again soon after calling Ed and Tony.
Cheers!

Hi Ana (Manila), Daddie (West Coast), Mila (Canada), and Rory (DC Area):
I am apprenticing to be Chief of Staff to the Consul General
and my
first assignment is help coordinate the coming NY Reunion.
As our Consul
is very busy, I have volunteered to be the local (New
York) point man
for the said reunion.
So from now on, could everybody send in all info/confirmation
to above
forthcoming affair to both Ling and myself.. Specifically,
we now need
to know:
1) Who exactly are coming ? Actual Prepian, significant
other, kids,
guests, etc......
2) Who would need tickets for the Miss Saigon show for
Friday, May 21st
?
3) How many would be attending the Filipino Community
Ball on the night
of May 22nd (Saturday). Kailangan na ito this week, sabi
ni Ling.
4) Kailan ang balak na dating (NYArrival Schedule please)
and how long
dito sa New York? We need to plan on the activities and
this shall be
dependent on who is here when...
5) Who would need hotel accommodations? For how many nights?
Starting
when? How many rooms / people?
I started thinking that it might make sense for me to
start calling
everybody. In fact I started already and got in touch
with the first on
my list "Atienza-Sangalang, Edith", kasi alphabetical.
But I realized
after talking to Edith, that it would take too long to
call everyone.
So, if there are no complaints (and even if there are
any complaints), I
would like to deputize the above addressees as co-coordinators
for the
affair. Paki-kulit naman everybody on the above information,
and send
them to me ASAP. I shall keep a master listing of attendees.
Last time I talked to Ling over the weekend, we had the
following quick
count of out-of-towners:
Daddie and hubby, Mila and hubby, Rory and hubby and daughter,
Edith,
Delay San Juan-Blank and ?, Girlie Esguerra-de Leon,
Wilma
Guererro-Rodriguez, and Felix Bustos and ?..
Did we miss anybody? And can you please (in your respective
areas)
follow up?
Please confirm everyone who each shall be contacting so
I know who I
have to follow up with myself.
Thanks.... and expecting, hoping, o sigue na nga, pleading
for a
response ASAP by e-mail or telephone.

As for the dinner Jojo mentioned, is that Friday after

I haven't heard back from my UP CN classmate about possibly
getting a big

Ling, who do we make the checks payable to? For

I would love it if we could find a big place where we
can gab away the
nights if we want to. That was why I was asking Mila
about the hostel.
I think $75 is expensive, too, as dinner-dances go, but
I figure it's a
once-in a lifetime thing, to show support for Ling and
to meet the Filipino
community in New York. Definitely want to see Lea, though.

forking that over for the
broadway show though.
I emailed a UP Coll of Nursing classmate who lives
close to NYC to check out
our friends if they have a big house that will be empty
at the time we'll all
be in town. I was thinking
we could all pitch in to rent a big place so
we can make a few days stretch ... or find a big apartment
that rents for a
week at a time. A couple of big apartments?
(depending on our numbers)
Kung
kami lang mag-asawa I think my classmate can accomodate
us or we could also
stay with his cousin who hosted us on our last visit.
By the way, from what I understand since Franklin is opting
to do his
schooling in Manila this time I thought Pat is begging
off for now... tama ba
Pat?
We've also rethought our trips, We might split our trip
into two to take
advantage of the early spring rates to Europe.
Besides, I'm actually doing
more vacation days than I have in store if we did the
15 day stint.
So what do you all think?

I understand the ball is on 5/22. So 5/21 for Miss Saigon should be ok.
It would be so much more fun if we were staying somewhere
together or
close. Mila mentioned a Y where she and Hermie had stayed.
Mila, can you
find out cost & availability?
FYI, solo flight ako, as usual!

Ano na nga ba ang date for the ball? Pls. give
more details on this
(time/venue, $$$, attire, etc.)
Considering this is also the week-end of the ball and
you said you're going
to be very busy - why did you suggest Friday 5/21 for
ms. Saigon? Or did you
mean 5/22 Sat? Now - I'm confused.
Everybody - pls. send Mila your comments/suggestions,
and she and ling can
put together final plan. Thanks.
Ana, let us set the reunion for the week-end of the 22nd
of May. Of course,
people are free to come the Friday before and stay longer
than the week-end
but we will have the core activities during that week-end
and possibly Monday.
I will make myself free on that day. Remember that Saturday
evening will be
completely out at least for me because of the ball. I
need numbers for this
event and the Lea Salonga thing for the reservations.
Evening wear is required
for the Ball but not necessarily for the play. The out-of-towners
usually come
casually. Perhaps we can go to the play on Sunday or
the Friday before. Give
me feedback. Also, pls. e-mail this to Mila. I cannot
memorize her address but
I will also try.

Evelina Ruiz- Velasco and I are coming for the weekend.
Are spouses included?
I've invited Ebong to fly up to Hartford, CT , (the airport
there is only
about 45 minutes from my house)- she's flying from Kentucky.
I can pick her
up, she can stay over at our house, then the next morning,
we can drive down
to NYC (about 3.5 hrs car drive from Northampton). I
think dapat kanya-
kanyang arrangements for housing - as that would be too
much to plan for. Then
we could just follow a pre-arranged itinerary - that
you can e- mail to
everybody as soon as all these plans become concrete.
May 22 works for us.
Ebong said the weekend of the 28th is a holiday (?) -
so it might be tight for
booking flights, unless we know way in advance.
O sige keep us informed. Love, Delay
Hi Ana B:
Please pasa bilis. Wrote this before I read Ling's recent
e-mail to Potit.
Anyway, paki na rin -- Thanks.

---------------------
Hi everyone,
Re the NYC reunion, all I can say is the idea is
so exciting, although no
details have yet been threshed out. Let's just
say this is all in the
planning stage in terms of us having our reunion, what
form it will take,
etc. And we need everyone's ideas and cooperation
and excitement to let
this happen.
It all started in a very informal, unexpected way.
Of course everyone
knows about Elmer's first e-mail bearing the good news
about Ling, followed
by everyone's congratulatory messages, then at some point
in our exchange
of e-mails, Ling mentioned about a community independence
ball, one of the
scheduled functions she would attend, and the wish she
expressed how nice
it would be if our class could also have a table.
(Hey Ling, ngayon,
mukhang tables na -- kkb!); and if I could help organize
some get-together,
and Elmer too, and Ana B. for the Manila group.
And then we picked up from one of Ana B's accounts that
people would want
to go to NY and watch Miss Saigon with Lea, etc. etc,
and with people
thinking this was such a good idea, a nd maybe a good
excuse to organize a
big reunion in N America (I think this is it Elmer, di
ba -- ), building
on the successess of our hastily planned and sometimes
spontaneous
mini-reunions in NY, LA, North California, Vancouver,
Toronto (yes, those
were really brief but nice times with, first Dennis and
family, then Ed,
Jojo, Girlie, Efren, Elmer and family, Rory and family),
and Manila, where
instant reunions are now almost weekly events.
So how about thinking about making NYC a reality?
Pero ang nakakatuwa,
when these ideas were already coming together, sabi
ni Ling, teka muna
raw at hindi pa niya nakukuha ang papers
niya! And when she finally told
us in a phone conversation na nakuha na, she asked
us to await word from
her re her schedule (Right Ling?) , as she might
still have to go to
Manila briefly in April, then come back to assume the
post.
Well, while awaiting word from Ling on the details, its
just fine by her
and us to assume it would be sometime around
May 22 (the community ball
which is, we think, open to those who may be in town
-- let's confirm as
early as we can then ask Ling how we get our tickets
and how much). So
let's plan around that date. With everyone's
help, we can plan our own
Prep event -- as Ling had put it: maybe a stroll in the
park, a walk in the
city streets, dinner in a restaurant, o kahit ano.
Puedeng mag-dress up o
dress down. But isn't it nice to get involved in
brainstorming on what to do?
Despite all the ambiguity of dates, Edith, Potit, Rory,
Jojo, Delay, Ed,
Wilma, Ruth, Girlie, Pat and Franklin, and Daddie have
confirmed. I'm sure
there are others who have already confirmed with some
people, but whom I
haven't had the chance todirectly connect with,
kaya, please keep
communications going, it doesn't matter who you connect
with through our
e-mail network and website, and then perhaps we can all
let Ana B know so
somehow all of us get to be informed in a comprehensive
manner re
developments. At this point, we are all still
asking ourselves: kailan ba
talaga, kasama ba ang mga esposo at esposa, anak, pamilya?
My thinking is:
puede kahit ano ang gusto natin. And I guess
we'll leave that decision to
each one. What do you think?
In fact, everyone in our class should by now know
there is this plan (Ana
B, please suggest how we can let others know who are
not yet connecting
with us online para masulatan), pero wala pang details.
It could be that
Ling can still successfully get us a block of tickets
for Miss Saigon, kung
hindi, kahit sine man lang, sama- sama tayong manood
sa isang big screen
theatre, sulit na di ba? O kaya magpunta sa isang
fun park na parang perya
(just like what we had done in LA, rides and shows, compliments
of Daddie
-- wasn't that great fun Edith, Dennis, Ed?) Tapos,
the usual daldalan,
yes Ana B, chismisan, and you've got to be there!!!
Now as to where to stay, how long the stay, etc, I guess
for now, wala pang
talagang napag-isipan and I suppose if we're a big group,
kanya-kanyang
contact muna sa kamag-anak, hehe!!
There are those expensive hotels and inns; there is a
nice place Hermie and
I had the good chance to discover during our latest weekend
get-away in NY(
when downtown hotels and inns we had contacted
were fully booked ) a
really cool and inexpensive place ( and not bad for it
was definitely
better than staying in a coffee shop overnight, waiting
for the next
available room in some inn-- an international youth hostel
-- very nice,
clean and pleasant (in terms of company, decency, safety
and convenience --
a good walking distance to NYU and St. Joseph Cathedral
and Soho). Buti na
lang tinanggap pa kami kasi mainly para sa international
students yon; at
the time we were there, yung nandoon yung tipo bang student
backpackers
from Europe and Asia, visiting the city for the first
time, either on
scholarship or as tourists. Diyahe kami noon mang-istorbo
kay Ling as it
was a very spontaneous, unplanned trip -- although she
had offered her
place when she learned on our second day we were in town.
But we did
manage to meet her and Eric for a brief coffee chitachat,
at least before
we had to go back to TO. And yes, Elmer and experts
in the area, may we
know other places you might suggest?
So let's all try to make it. For those who haven't
figured out yet where
to go for summer, NYC is certainly a good place to be----
so let's all make
this happen. (Elmer, kami na ang bahala dito sa
Canada ni Ed at Tony --
unfortunately Efren cannot make it, but he wishes us
all the fun), ikaw na
ang bahala diyan sa banda diyan -- sabi ni Ling.
Si Daddie and the
active West Coast gang are very much organized for us
to even worry about
-- and Daddie has said YES! Biglang detour sila to NYC
instead of going
home straight to LA from the honeymoon in Europe
-- yes, it's their 25th
--( Daddie, sorry could not help it -- everyone should
know.) ( And by the
way Francisco, you did say, we have to let you know when
the next big
reunion is so you can plan and let it coincide with your
vacation--. So
how about seeing you and your family there? It
would be nice.) (Dennis,
pag dumating ka, ibibigay ko lahat ng utang ko sa iyong
letrato -- kasama
na yung famous dare-devil ride ninyo ni Hermie.)Tapos,
si Ling, 25th din
this year -- baka puedeng mag-early pre-anniversary get-together?
Ling
ngayon ko lang naisip ito -- baka lang makalusot.
Me? I think I have my own special excuses....
So let's all have our own excuses for making this a special
vacation -- may
it be our collectively turning- or- having- just- turned-
golden, our
anniversaries, or our own special treat for being
the human beings that we
are and for keeping good friendships that will last through
the next
millenium, -- so we can scrimp, beg, steal
save, borrow, win the lotto
just to be there.
So see you all in NY!!!!!!!
Until then (sige na at tapos na ang lunch break ko).
My best regards and good wishes,
CHEEEEERRRSSS!!!!

Hi y'all! from the worker bee in L.A.
Kami po ni Mr. Matic ay may balak dumalaw sa gawi ni Deborah
Ledesma bandang
May 10 for about a week or so, at dahil na nga sa mga
bulung bulungan sa
Internet eh binalak na rin namin i-extend hanggang sa
5/22/99 para makidalo na
sa unang official "appearance" ni Ling. We intend
to be in NYC by 5/19/99.
dalawang major "to do-s" ... Para sa aming mag-asawa,
lilipad na kami pauwi sa
LAX by 5/23/99.
Kung ano man ang mapagkasunduan eh, excited na po kami! See y'all!

dear potit,
at last i have some details of the nyc reunion. thanks.
i might go to lax
sometime in april and because of this new development
i might just move it
to may to accommodate the may thing in nyc although of
course i will have to
see if i can afford a nyc trip since that's a far more
expensive fare than lax.
there are currently some promos specifically for us travel
agents but all will end
by march 31 so i cannot use that privilege. frank
says he will definitely send
me to lax but he has not said anything yet about the
additional leg.
girlie and ruth are going - girlie is leaving manila about
the first week of
may but i guess she will still go to canada where her
other relatives are. many of the
classmates from manila are seriously considering making
the trip kaya exciting talaga. But wait...
where are we all going to stay? may matitirahan
ba o kanya-kanya itong
portion na ito? i have cousins there though so
if worst comes to worst then
i can ask them to spare me a room if need be.
let me know the other details please - like how much
the miss saigon
tickets, are and what this community ball [Phil. independence
day --> to be
celebrated 5/22] is all about - may bayad ba iyan and
what's the dress
needed to be worn, etc. etc.
i'm sick right now - from too much honeymooning i guess
- but
felt better upon reading your email. thanks.
today is our 37th anniversary
as sweethearts!!! frank greeted me via text messaging
(cell to cell) -
napakasweet naman ng asawa ko talaga. ria is also
down with intestinal flu - sobrang
pagod din kasi and frank is going to take her to the
doctor later. until next
email....love, pat
Ling - salamat sa response.
What's suggested itinerary for the weekend of 5/22 -
in case more people
prefer that schedule? Same as 5/28 - except w/ the ball?
I forwarded you an e-mail from Pat M w/ a couple of questions.
Will you
please respond to that, too? Salamat.
Regards
Potit
p.s. to ana b/pat --> can you please forward to all the
rest? Thanks.

Potit,
how about the week-end of 22 May for the reunion. I suggest
this if you
guys would like to attend the Philippine Independence
Day Ball organized by
the Filipino Community. This will probably be the first
big function I will
be attending as Consul-General.
If not, I suggest the following Friday, 28th May through
the week-
end. That way, I am done with the preparations for and
the Ball itself. We
can probably do Miss Saigon that Saturday, matinee or
evening and have dinner
that day. Sunday can be spent at SoHo and lunch at Chinatown
or even a
circle-line cruise around Manhattan by the Hudson River.
Can you pls. pass this on to
the others. I am still pseudo-literate as far as the
e-mail is concerned.
Ling
Ana B - puwede bang paki-broadcast to the rest of those
who may be coming to
NYC, please? T.Y. again. [ikaw ba makakarating? We're
all hoping you could.]

Hi Potit again,
Ling was inquiring if we really want to watch Miss Saigon
(again) with Lea
playing the role, so she can get a block of tickets.
Edith has indicated
she wants to, so I'm trying to see how many among us
are final about this
decision, so we can advise Ling. I know the Manila
group (i do not exactly
know who) is eager for this, as Ana B had mentioned at
one time in her

okay with this? That is, if you don't mind doing
this. Kami ok na rin.
Thanks. Hope we can keep in touch this often.

Hi Delay,
How nice of you to reply so promptly. Ako'y tuwang
tuwa at mukhang okay ka sa
date. I just received Ling's note last night and
talked to Hermie about it,
mukhang puede kami, and yes, it falls on my golden week
too, kaya exciting at
makikita kita at ang marami nating barkada.
Haay naku, and to think this was
just a thought we had when we visited NY September 1997,
and Ling, Eric, Hermie
and I met briefly for coffee. Ang mga napag-usapan
namin, ang pag-gawa ng
web-page, at ang pag-organize ng reunion sa New York
or anywhere in North
America. And I'm sure we were not alone in thinking
about this -- this was also
a wish and plan of many others. Now that things
seem to perfectly fall into
place, GO na tayo !!! Indeed we of batch 65 are both
dreamers and doers. And
yes, I haven't stopped dreaming these days, and you know
what? the more I do,
the more I find out there is no limit to what we can
indeed dream and do, so
long as they are the will of our minds and our hearts.
Here's hoping you are well.
My warmest regards to you and your family,
Mila
PS hindi nga tayo nagkikita, pero dahil sa balitaan namin
nina Ana B and account
on the Web, buhay ang memories ko sa iyo -- the last
time we met was at Ling's
place, when we had a party by the pool, and you and your

Manila. Looking forward to meeting you both.
