Archbishop Romero fought on the behalf of the poor, the oppressed, and the decent hard working people of his land. For this, He was killed. He was brutally gunned down in the middle of celebrating his freedom in the eyes of God. He was killed by his government. His government whose purpose is to provide protection and basic necessities of life for all whom it governs. Instead, this government protects the wealthy. Protects them from loosing their ill gotten money to the people who truly earned it. These working people had their money stolen from them, and when they fought to get it back they were murdered. It was this injustice that Romero fought against. It was this injustice that brought his death. In the United States today there are many similar injustices that occur on a day to day basis. Whether it be racial oppression to sexual harassment, the same that is still going on in El Salvador is going on today in America. Many would argue with me and bring up the point that I live a very fortunate life, but apparently I’m not that shallow. I am compassionate enough to realize that many people in this country are suffering because the rich can’t live without their luxuries. 90% of the wealth in this nation is held by 5% of the population. And in case no one has noticed; money is power. Those on top will use all of their power to hold on to their money; hoarding it. Leaving the people who are not "fortunate" enough to be greedy to squabble amongst themselves for the leftovers. The rich invent schemes to keep their money. They pit us against each other with racism and call it "cultural diversity." They make us compete for the basic necessities of life and call it a "free market economy." Well I have come to the realization that privilege rules this nation. The system was set up, and modified, by the ones in power. They deceive us with false hopes that we can individually make a difference by letting us vote. If voting could change anything, it would be illegal. The only way to change things is to unite. Don’t be fooled any longer. Make a stand. Make a difference. Take charge of your life.
