WHO: Sneaky Jack, The Swingset, endgame, Hissy Fit and Polesmoker
WHAT: A Punk show
WHERE: Almonte Arena
WHEN: Friday May 14/1999
The night started out with the pop-punk stylings of Sneaky Jack. Sounding a lot like Blink 182, if Pop punk is your jones then Sneaky Jack is the band for you. They played some of their own stuff including thier controversial song, OH Henry. Plus their famous covers like My Girl that get everyone singing. Members include: Ryan Christie and Dave Charbonneau on vocals and guitar, Joe Shorkey on Drums and Paul Dubas on Bass.
Next came Polesmoker, who I guess you could classify as hardcore.. I don't know if it was the mikes or what but the vocals weren't as strong as one could desire, but what they lacked in vocal intensity they made up in their amazing guitar and bass riffs. Members include: Justin Saunders on drums, Jordan Saborin on guitar and vocals, Derek Mallory on bass and Matt Leach on guitar and vocals.
After Polesmoker came another of Almonte's own, The Swing Set. It was great to see these guys back in town, after all it's been AGES since they've played in Almonte. Most of their set was new stuff and but they squeezed in some oldies for us fans. Blair Yakimovich, back-up vocals and bass, was in his prime that night, moving around the stage and leaping into the air. It seems it's rubbing off on Rob Hopewell, rhythm guitar, as he moved out from his corner by the amps and busted a few moves himself. Adam has really matured in his vocal stylings these past few years, I guess all those shows away from home have really let him explore his extent of talent.. Till next time guys!
Then came all the way from out west.... Hissy Fit!!! These guys were amazing and you could tell they've been in the music scene for awhile. Comparable to the Screeching Weasel, these guys went all out. The vocals, Giselle Grignet brought her own sense of style to covers such as Black Sabbath, and the Ramones. Other members include Scott Wong on drums, Terry Armstrong on guitar and Rich Colwell on bass. The audience which was lacking at that point in the show, caused Grignet to scream into the mike at the people hanging around outside, with some choice phrases that aren't repeatable in this article.
Finally came end game, all the way from Ottawa, this is the first gig these guys have played out here in awhile. These guys have a presence comparable to Green Day with Rob Willbond who plays back-up vocals and bass, hanging onto the mike for dear life, and at such an angle it's amazing. And to think I helped string this guy's bass.. Oooooh. Lyrics were punk to the core baby!! With Andrew Draper keeping it true on drums. The way it should be! Brian Curry, lead vocals and guitar accompanied with Willbond, made EVERYONE come up stage instead of lurking in the corners. Unfortunately these guys played last, we needed somebody to do that at the BEGINNING of the show... Yes these guys were an excellent way to end up the night, not too harsh but enough to keep me awake during the late hour of the show.
