When: Saturday December 5th, 7:00 P.M
Where: THE VENT: Almonte TYPS Youth Center
Who: PSL, Cunt, Split Second, No Shirts and Swingset.
Then came The No Shirts. These guys were amazing, if you get a chance to see them.. GO! When they were warming up, people at the back were betting on what style of music it was, and it came down to: Classic Rock. What ever they were, I was blown away. Mixed with sometimes high pitched vocals, and some wicked guitar playing, I was reminded of Dandy, who had only played at The Vent, only a few weeks before. The No Shirts, had been moved up into the play list because they were playing at Carleton U later that night, which made it only more amusing when they decided to play two encores, much to the objection of the singer. OverRuled they played this amazing song about German planes. It had a little intro at the beginning accompanied with umm *fitting* music. I helped them pack up after, and they were on their way to play at Oliver’s. I just hope that they enjoyed them in Ottawa as much as I did.
Split Second played after No Shirts had gone, and to tell you the truth I went upstairs after they left.
Cunt was on next. It was an all girl punk band that as far as I could tell played a bunch of covers. At first I was expecting them to sound kind of like FacePlant, edgy but loud and harsh. But Cunt although edgy and loud wasn't as harsh as Faceplant is, they sounded pretty good, and could understand the lyrics pretty much, but covers... hmm it’s just not the same as writing your own stuff...
I went back down when The Swing Set came on, playing last at a quarter after 11. It was late but energy still hung in the air. Rumours of them playing “Five Star Girl” filtered through the room, but the gang hadn’t played it in so long that Terris had forgot how to play it. Instead they plugged two of their new songs and played “Climb” in which many of the dedicated fans began to sing along. And of course what Swing Set concert would be complete without Adam breaking a string! Blair tried to fill the silence with anecdotes and Rob’s ‘robot’ mime window washer. Finally someone came up with the awesome idea of having a Jack Says Nothing reunion and dragging JSN bassist, Adam Millar, on-stage. So they played ‘Archie and Jughead’ while Adam S. fixed his string.
I’d have to say that this has to be the best show the Vent has ever put on, and it seems they’re always full of surprises whether they plan them or not!
