The Writings of Aune Vahakangas

I am pleased and honored to have the works of Finnish
writer, Aune Vahakangas, on Writers' Corner. Her daughter,
Anna, learned of the web site through a post to the
ABOLISH list by my dear friend, Karen Pecnik, and wrote
me a lovely note, asking if I would like to post some
of her mother's work. *Would* I? I am thrilled and grateful
for the privilege.

I capture the birds of my thoughts
into a cage
but they have taken
the golden key
of imagination
which sets them
easily free
and my birds
fly across the ocean
through the winds
and clouds
those little lively
swallows
and titmice

I love birds
because they have longing in their hearts.
And the longing brings them across the ocean...
I love birds:
they fly through winds, clouds and storms
and nothing can prevent them
from bringing you my touch of love,
from singing with a voice that blesses you
and fills your place
with bright rays of hope and joy.
I love birds,
my small titmice and swallows.
Their longing carries them across the ocean
and nothing can prevent them from reaching you...

The sermon of spring

A frail sprout
pierced the soil
when it no longer could
resist the call
with which
Light
Warmth
and Love
again and again touched it.

Clenched fists
straining at their chains,
eyes flashing defiance:
the doors to tomorrow closed
-or have they ever been opened?

He was not out of the cradle yet
when he went astray
"tough guy":

heart filled with longing for mom

My Lord, don't take this pain away from me:
let my neighbor's agony burn my heart so
that I break down
and cry for his distress,
sharing his anxiety.

Keep me from getting used to my sister's and
         brother's suffering.

The two poems that follow are dedicated to Aune's
pen pal on Death Row in Huntsville, Texas

I want to snatch a piece of the blue sky,
some scent of light fresh snow,
some twitter of the titmice
sitting on the branches.
I want to take
some dawn of the sun in the morning
and some red
of the berries in the mountain ash.
I want to take all this,
to put it in my pocket
and to bring it to you
as greetings of the brightness of the day,
as beams of hope,
as warmth of true love.

Now I hid some of all this
as a sign of our wonderful friendship
in my letter to you,
brother of my soul.

Would I turned into a ray of sun,
which would open a hole
in a heavy grey cloud above you
and give light and hope into your path today.
Would I were a flower,
which would smell of warm thoughts
and the beauty of which would make you happy.
Would I were a gentle rain,
which would wash all your sorrows overboard,
and a wind, which would bring across the ocean
a great deal of joy into your heart.
Would I were a little bird, which would perch
on your shoulder and sing a smile to your face.

Would I built a wall of love around you
to protect you against all evil.

Do you feel my eyes looking at you?
Do you feel my hand in your hand?
Do you feel my prayers blessing you?
