"I love you" got stuck in the back of my throat.
I wanted to spit it out, but I tried to swallow,
Knowing that, once it escaped, it had no mark.
Everyone else saw you as they always do,
Eyes, arms and heart wide open,
But I saw your hands over your ears,
Your eyes shut tight to me,
And your heart was nowhere in sight.
So I swallowed,
Tasted the bitterness of emotional reflux,
And washed it down with a big glass of Scotch.
