To Mark

The past is not simply the past, but a prism through which the subject filters his own changing self-image.

Doris Kearns Goodwin

to Mark

Past wine and sorrows
and tears and love.
Past you.
Never be equal
only you and the past-
Surround me,
senses filled with reminisce.

I fight regret but I
always look back
to the bull
In the distance
Who eyes my fading red.
and, occasionally,
Still wish I were dead.

Past and you
Hanging on my head.
Without needle I thread
beyond all that,
And find life and joy
In soft
Pink sunsets.
