"He has an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again" -- Nick on Gatsby
Jay Gatsby is the rich man of the novel. He is a World War I veteran and he used to romance Daisy. However, while he was away at war, Daisy got married to
Tom. This, however, doesn't affect Gatsby who continues to romance her and they end up having an affair.
Although it is not really known how he got rich, it is suspected that he got his money through illegal gambling and dealings. [for example, the 1919 World Series in which the players on the Chicago White Sox helped out organized crime by not trying their hardest when it counted]
Gatsby's main goal throughout this whole novel is to get Daisy back from Tom.
