Short Bio - Caterina Davinio is computer artist, writer, curator. Born in Foggia (November 25th 1957), living in Rome since 1961. During the 90s she organized festivals and meetings in many Italian cities, creating a bridge between experimental poetry and the circuit of electronic art. Graduated in Italian Literature at Rome University La Sapienza in 1981 (student of Giulio Carlo Argan, Alberto Asor Rosa, and Walter Pedullà), she realized computer animated poetry in Italy, experimenting in this field since1990. Since 1998 her work appeared in the Internet with net-poetry collaborative projects, among them Karenina.it, the first Italian net-poetry project and an international point of reference for the avant-garde. She presented world-wide her work, exhibited for the first time digital poetry in the Venice Biennale (VeneziaPoesia Project, 1997, Nanni Balestrini curator; then again in 1999 in the context of Oreste Project, Italian Pavillion). She lives in Monza and Lecco since 1997, working at international level.
Caterina Davinio è computer artista, scrittrice, curatrice.
festival e convegni
in
Laureata in lettera all'Università La
Lamberto Pignotti, Eugenio Miccini, Mirella Bentivoglio, Tomaso Binga, Philadelpho Menezes,
Luca Patella, Clemente Padin, e molti artisti e teorici dei nuovi media. Con
Karenina.it ha realizzato eventi performativi legati alla poesia
sperimentale
collocati contemporaneamente in più spazi
reali e virtuali. Caterina Davinio ha presentato in molti paesi del
mondo la sua ricerca, portando
per la prima volta la
computer
Progetto Oreste, Padiglione Italia,
Bunker Poetico (Azione Parallela on Line).

Poetry as social structure, E-communication, real/virtual interaction. E-communication as new material of art. How Internet brings in discussion the role of the artist, his identity, and how the concepts of identity, reality, nature, copy, original, presence, performance, space-time, are disintegrated but also reconstructed. First net-poetry project realized
in Italy. International meeting point around new media poetry and avant-garde,
concrete, video, visual, sound poetry, and experimental art. Materials: navigators
contribute with digital images, texts, links, news, communication about the
topics. By Jakobson, phatic is the use of the language which has the finality to
maintain open and operative the communication channel among the interlocutors.
On the limit between art and critic, happening and net performance, Karenina.it
is a virtual meeting place where experiences of international artists, curators,
theorists, converge, in a net of thousands of contacts in the world.

"Paint From Nature" is a representation, made with e-mails, of the
terror attack to the Twin Towers in NYC. The large amount of e-mail arrived from
NYC at the artist's studio on September 11 was forwarded to Giubbe Rosse Cafè
in Florence in the context of a virtual/real performance. This telematic passage
testified and described in a non-iconic - but virtual-realistic - way the
tragedy of the Twin Towers as it appeared in the telemathic flux. This space, as
a landscape, is copied down, or, with a metaphor, photographed. Description:
The event in Florence was realized in collaboration with Massimo
Mori, Fiorenzo Smalzi, and other artists. A performance by Caterina Davinio was
expected during the opening of the visual poetry exhibition "Tribute to
Marinetti" (Tomaso Binga curator). From Davinio's studio, in another town
(Lecco), arrived in Florence a large amount of e-mail, that was printed and put
on a board during the opening. This was at the beginning not perceived as
performance, then became incomprehensible when the papers on the plank grow to
be a grat number. Gradually everybody went to read the printed matter, with a
dramatic impact. In Ajaccio this event was reproduced during a
performance meeting at the Anglican Church (Akenaton curators). Published in the
international avant-garde journal “Doc(k)s” Ajaccio, F.

Collaborative
planetary network event. 150 international artists contributed with performance,
poetry, digital art, video-art, from: Belgium, Morocco, Lebanon, Chile,
Amazzonia, USA, Greece, UK, Brazil, Germany, Spain, and from other countries. Gates
developed the basis idea of the previous project Global Poetry, with some
variations, such as a duration in time of six months. In polemic with net-art as
spectacular electronic environment or game on line, "Gates" increased
the real dimension of the network, with simultaneous installations/performances
decentralized in real places, in far locations of the planet. Artists
participated by realizing, in their countries, a real installation/performance
using the icon of the door. Under and around these doors (very different as
form, realization, creation) happened poetry readings, performances, video
screenings, documented on line, in a circulation of action-communication between
real and cyberspace, visual and word. This project is related to the symbolic
meaning of the gate, with its metaphoric implications, of computer science, and
telematic: "gates" as ways of transit, as dimension of
"open", passages in every direction, at every level, real-virtual,
visual-word, art-poetry, critic-art, moving-still, image-text-performance,
presence-absence, etc. The call was directed to experimental artists, poets, art
critics, theoreticians, "e-post-Fluxus casseurs",
"e-post-post-duchamp-ists"...
