This oil painting started life as a small sepia photo about 5 inches by three.
Albert Southwell had already retired from a career in the army when in 1914 he volunteered to join the Royal Defense Corps.
He came from Totton, just West of Southampton and according to records,
"Was detained on important duties with his unit at various stations."
He was demobilised in 1919.
