In 1995, Mumia Abu-Jamal was only 10 days away from execution, when a world-wide outcry forced the government to back down and grant a stay of execution.

Only twice in the twentieth century have there been court ordered executions of political dissidents in the United States. The last time was the Rosenbergs over 40 years ago. And the government has not dared to carry out the legal execution of a prominent Black revolutionary since the days of slavery. To let them get away with such an act now would send a chilling message throughout society. It would affect the political climate for years to come.

The case of Mumia Abu-Jamal concentrates the criminalzation of Black men, the suppression of dissent, the expanded death penalty, the gutting of defendants rights, and a whole political atmosphere based on blame and punishment of the most oppressed.

The battle to Stop The Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal is heating up. With the recent full page ad in the N.Y. Times by supporters of Daniel Faulkner (the cop supposedly murdered by Mumia), new and dangerous precedents are being advanced. Never before in American history has the police openly and officially (through the F.O.P.) entered into calling for an execution. Much of the funds for this ad have come through F.O.P. activities.

The battle lines are being sharply drawn and this full page ad is seen by many to represent the beginnings of a new public opinion offensive to create favorable conditions for the powers that be to be able to execute Mumia. On the other side, there are many who see this case as an example of a government gone mad in its attacks on the people and its politics of cruelty.

This is a particularly dangerous time for Mumia. His appeal for a new trial sits before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and Mumia's legal team expects this court to deny his appeals. Governor Thomas Ridge has already stated publicly he will immediately sign a new death warrant for Mumia. This will mark a new stage in this battle. And at the Federal Court level, Mumia's case becomes even more dire due to the new Effective Death Penalty Act (see Clark Kissinger's article, 'Whats Next In The Courts) of 1996.

All of this is an indication that much needs to be done if we are going to stop the execution of Mumia, get a new trial, and finally free Mumia. These pages are devoted to this effort. Inside you will find the why the state wants Mumia executed, what is at stake in this battle and what is it going to take to stop this execution.

As one purpose of these pages is to inform so that we can act... there will be an attempt to update the pages with the current activities and court decisions and what they represent. This will be done as we become aware of them.
