My Life - as of 24 January 1998

Here I am, wanting to write something brilliant and creative, some sort of wise rumination that scans well and makes everyone think I'm a really cool person. But it doesn’t seem to be the right night for that. I could try getting under a bodhi tree perhaps....
What then, if not some clever piece of wit.. Its 1.11am here, on an empty saturday night/morning/does it really matter. I've been in sydney for 6mths now, and its been easy. Easy in the sense that the weather is gorgeous, they speak english, they have shopping centres and arty, R(a) in s'pore, foreign movies on the SBS channel. Of course they put up an episode of Under One Roof there a week ago and my feelings are still mixed about that. Anyway, it obviously isnt some porno playboy channel or anything, its just an 'ethnic' channel. You know the kind, they have news on in ten different languages in the mornings, which is kinda cool since u can sit there and learn how to say 'a hot and sunny day' in indonesian, greek, italian, maltese, spanish, hungarian, ukranian, polish and mandarin. If u watch a little longer you can get arabic too, but im not so sure coz I have to be at sch by then (and I *wldnt* want to miss sch, wld I).

One thing I learnt here, is that chinese as a language doesn’t necessarily equate the chinese we learnt(?) at school. My hongkong/macau classmates all consider cantonese as their first language, except ive always thought it was just a dialect. I havent said so to them yet since I don’t want to offend anyone, especially since my chinese(i.e mandarin) is nothing to shout about (unless u're my chinese teacher). And as such, in anglo-aussie land, I learnt that chinese isnt just plain old chinese, its 1)mandarin,2)putonghua, 3)hokkien, 3)hakka..etc, 4)cantonese, and not just cantonese, but different kinds of cantonese too. Im trying to learn enough of it to order dimsum in chinatown (i.e. hongkongtown) without fear of getting intestines or other dubious parts of pigs. Oh, and the dimsum(aka yumcha) here is really good, and im talking authentic cantonese cuisine, what with the HK chefs migrating here post 1997. Outside chinese restaurants though, you come across a lot of food places that display these crumpled and oily fried wontons/shrimp rolls/etc. and label them 'Dimsims'. I still want to strangle them.

Dimsum irregardless, I miss the food in singapore. Its not so much the kinds of food, they *do* have asian food here. In fact, around my uni, its not difficult to assume that there are more asian food places than 'western' ones.. I say assume since ive never actually bothered to count them (what do u mean why not). What I miss is the quality. And the chilli crab. But back to the quality. In singapore, when you walk into a food court, restaurant, hawker centre..etc, you can be quite assured the food will be good. Not neccessarily amazing or delectably-scrumptious(and other drool-inducing adjectives), but at the very least, satisfying. However, here in sydney, places with bad food abound. Its so irritating to walk into a place and order something and not want to eat it, and then have that happen to you again somewhere else in the same week. Perhaps that has something to do with the 'greener grass' looking glass, but I still havent yet found a place with good laksa and I miss that. Oh, and the macdonalds here doesn’t have iced-lemon tea, Tragic to an addict. The redeeming factor, however, is that their ice-cream cones are not only fresh and really yummy but also Only 30cents! Someone petition the S'pore McManagement or something. Oh yes, and recently there's this new Triple Cheeseburger thing that's seriously good. I mean, they finally make a cheeseburger big enough to be filling. The ideal staple meal.

  (sorry. cldnt resist it)
Im typing this out on MsWord 8.0 now, and im getting a lot of these red squiggly lines. Anyway, I've just exceeded one page in font 12 for times new roman (I know u really wanted to know that) and I think I probably should stop. If u've read so far, It could mean that this didn’t bore you, Or, u might have been really bored to begin with and decided scrolling up and down was easier than waiting for someone else's webpage to download. In any case, this has been long enough. I still have tons to yabber on about my life here in sydney, and maybe I can make this a regular installment on MangoJam. Send me your comments why don’t you…and..
