This is the main entrance of Greenmount Cemetery, as seen from inside on the hill. |
The Stowell Steps 14 July 1998 |
From Route 2, these steps are the most distinctive feature of the cemetery. They were carved into this enormous ledge as a memorial to W.A. Stowell and his family. |
The Stowell Steps 14 July 1998 |

A plaque on the right side of the steps reads: LEDGE-WORK COMMENCED JUNE 19, 1897 COMPLETED NOV 3 1898 CUT BY CHARLES P. BAILEY DEC. 18 1840 - SEPT 14, 1911 A VERMONT CRAFTSMAN WHO SERVED HIS TRADE AND HIS NATION WELL GRANITE CUTTER AND UNION ARMY VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1864 GREAT GRANDFATHER OF MARILYN F. Stone 15 July 1998 |
This monument dominates the landscape. When I first saw it, I thought "Who do they think they are?". When I took a closer look, I found out that they are, in fact, pretty impressive. When I find where I left the picture of the closeup, you can expect to find it here. |
Winter Crypt 15 July 1998 |
The old winter crypt is where the dead used to be kept until the ground thawed enough to dig graves. |

1887-1906 This stone is a good representative of the Italian headstones from the turn of the century. |
Stratton 15 July 1998 |
FEB12, 1818 -- OCT. 10, 1833 SUSAN HAWES LEGGE HIS WIFE NOV. 22, 1816 -- OCT. 10, 1906 STRATTON I picked this stone for my collection because it's representative of a popular style of the day. Notice that at the base, the carving suggests that the stonecutter simply didn't finish forming the smooth shape. I feel that this is symbolic of work unfinished. |

This intricate carving is of red sandstone, and the crown is completely hollowed out. I'm not sure why it hasn't crumbled to dust. | |

|
Is was not unusual in this era for the subject of a monument to be depicted with his hand on what appears to be a hitching post. In this case, on closer examination, Joel Foster is leaning on a fire hydrant. |

The delicate drape and elaborate sharp relief patterns on this monument are not carved, but rather cast in metal (perhaps aluminum). The obelisk appears to be cast in one hollow piece and rests on a carved granite base with metal plates affixed.
James J. Wade 15 July 1998 |
WADE SON OF JOSHUA &FANNIE M. WADE BORN DEC. 9, 1859. DIED SEP. 20, 1879. ABSENT, NOT DEAD. This monument is metal cast in two pieces mounted on a granite base. I have not seen many of these metal monuments, and do not know if they were more or less expensive than granite, which is one of this region's major industries even today. They do appear to hold up well agaist the ravages of time and weather, which makes me wonder why they're not more popular. |
LUTHER M.
