The Stowell Steps

From Route 2, these steps are the most distinctive feature of the cemetery. They were carved into this enormous ledge as a memorial to W.A. Stowell and his family.

I picked this stone for my collection because it's representative of a popular style of the day. Notice that at the base, the carving suggests that the stonecutter simply didn't finish forming the smooth shape. I feel that this is symbolic of work unfinished.

Is was not unusual in this era for the subject of a monument to be depicted with his hand on what appears to be a hitching post. In this case, on closer examination, Joel Foster is leaning on a fire hydrant.

The delicate drape and elaborate sharp relief patterns on this monument are not carved, but rather cast in metal (perhaps aluminum). The obelisk appears to be cast in one hollow piece and rests on a carved granite base with metal plates affixed.

This monument is metal cast in two pieces mounted on a granite base. I have not seen many of these metal monuments, and do not know if they were more or less expensive than granite, which is one of this region's major industries even today. They do appear to hold up well agaist the ravages of time and weather, which makes me wonder why they're not more popular.
