Hippies!

All right, I know there are a lot of misconceptions out there about hippies. After all, hippies are just those pot-smoking, acid-dropping rejects that hang around the local head shop listening to the Grateful Dead and mumbling about free love, right? Either that, or they're the flaky, tie-dyed longhairs in the multicolored VW vans that sit around eating tofu and earnestly debating world peace and the cosmic solution.

The two popular myths about hippies tend to involve either (a) the strung-out loser that hasn't bathed in a month or (b) the wide-eyed whitelight flowerchild that couldn't find his or her way out of a wet paper bag.

Can I just say something?

I am not a whitelighter. I am not a new ager. I am not a grunger.

Yes, I listen to 60's music. I believe in peace and love. Sometimes I wear beads or bell-sleeved dresses or long flowy skirts. I don't smoke pot or drop acid. Don't own a pair of bellbottoms (much to my dismay). I think I know part of one Grateful Dead song. Hippyism is all in the attitude, baby, not the external stuff. :) Not every hippie wears bellbottoms or uses drugs or listens to 60's rock. There are some that even – gasp! – don't drive Volkswagons!

The point of this is that, although some hippies do some of those things, not all hippies do all of them. Something to realize when dealing with hippies. Just treat 'em like they're real people, and you should be okay. :)
