WHIMSICAL POETRY

But in the Night
Written for my Aunt Gay
02/2000

My dearest Aunt Gay,

In the sunlight,
I know that you are safe,
Your beautiful spirit is free
Released from the pain of your body,

But in the night, I cry
For the pain in your life, your illness
I mourn your death, our loss
And the loss of those who will not know you

In the sunlight,
I remember you as you were.
I recall your love, all that you did
All that you meant to my life

But in the night I cry
Because I want you here.
The loving presence that is you
And not just the memory

In the sunlight,
I celebrate your existence
Grateful for your life, your wisdom,
your grace; for the time we had with you

But in the night I cry
I contemplate all you should have had;
The time, the joy, the laughter, the love.
Stolen from you, and from all who love you

In the sunlight, life continues on,
But in the night, I cry.
