washington square

there were skates
and girls in tanks
and butterfly tatoos
and songs played on guitars
and there will be hot dog carts
with green poland springs
and semi-cold knishes
and leashes on collars
and lamp-posts and bikes
and green or blue hair
and fountain water splashing
and kids on trollers
and men in suits
and back-pack travellers
and books being read
and art being made
and at the end of it all
the tall tan arch
that looks over them all.
