My name is Leanne Buckley. I am 21 years of age and a senior at the University of Cincinnati, studying under fine arts. I hope to graduate in the fall of 1998. I work mainly in 2d-media, specifically in printmaking and drawing; although this past quarter I have become interested in the computer as a means of creating art.
When one includes the human figure in their work, narrative is inherent. One cannot help notice a story evolve around the work, around the figure itself; whether it be the given narrative supplied with the piece, or if there is none, one forms the story around the image, creating their own plot or sequences about the contents therein. The viewer may wonder on the temperment of the artist when they made the piece in question, and what processes the artist went through to create the work itself, and in that there exists a narrative. Humanity can be found in any object, living or non, and with this, the language that accompanies it transcends all forms of verbal limitation that might describe what would be happening within the piece. It is this which drives my work. I want my art to contain its own story and for the viewer to derive from that the details which lie within, and thereby add to the piece. My figures exist in solitude, providing a sense of monumentality to their being, a sense of strength in quietude. Even within the pieces devoid of the actual figure, the objects making the work maintain a feeling of humanity and the monumentality associated with it. My work concerns the acceptance of the self, for the good or bad, and feeling of elevation acheived after one realizes their true being.
