Helen Heukshorst has a B.CS from Acadia University. Her poetry is observational and expresses life around her. Here is one example of serious writing and one limerick.
In Memory of Ice Storm '98
I remember January '98,
It turned into ice with nary a sound
As it grew thicker on wires and trees
The branches fell down onto the lines
Next power poles crumpled under the weight
More power was lost as each pole fell
It forced businesses to close for a while
The homes with no power and no source of heat,
So shelters were formed for those in the cold
Folks worked together as Volunteers
They kept up our spirits and donated food
Helpers came in from far, far away
They brought in their trucks from East and West
They brought back the power, and fixed up the phones
I'm glad the storm's over and fallen trees gone,
- Helen Heukshorst - February 2, 1998
