Helen's Tittle

Helen Heukshorst has a B.CS from Acadia University.
Her poetry is observational and expresses life around her.
Here is one example of serious writing and one limerick.

In Memory of Ice Storm '98

I remember January '98,
the rain came down for many a day.

It turned into ice with nary a sound
On trees and wires and on the ground.

As it grew thicker on wires and trees
It snapped off branches in the breeze.

The branches fell down onto the lines
And roadways got blocked by toppled signs.

Next power poles crumpled under the weight
Of so much ice whose mass was too great.

More power was lost as each pole fell
And many lost the service of Bell.

It forced businesses to close for a while
And schools too, which made children smile.

The homes with no power and no source of heat,
Had no way of making something to eat.

So shelters were formed for those in the cold
Especially for the young and the old.

Folks worked together as Volunteers
And helped us weather this storm of the year.

They kept up our spirits and donated food
Which everyone said was deliciously good.

Helpers came in from far, far away
Working real hard, day after day.

They brought in their trucks from East and West
To deal with the tonne of fix-it requests

They brought back the power, and fixed up the phones
And helped us all return to our homes.

I'm glad the storm's over and fallen trees gone,
But the memory of storm '98 still lives on!

Cow and Pig

There once was a cow and a pig
Who decided to do a jig.
They danced all night long
To a very bad song,
In a barn the biggest of big.
