Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Being an Area or Group Leader at Epworth But Were Afraid to Ask On Tuesday, January 31st from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Keith Badowski, Assistant to the Pastor, is leading this workshop on the “nuts and bolts” of being a volunteer leader at Epworth UMC. Designed specifically for all the people taking on new positions in 2006, this workshop will be valuable to anyone (new or continuing) who leads groups, classes, or ministries in the church. We will discuss how to keep in contact and on course with God’s leadership, how to plan/organize/lead meetings, how to recruit other volunteers and members, how to publicize activities and events, and how to tap all the resources that are already in place for you. Please RSVP with Keith Badowski by Wednesday, January 25th to guarantee your free binder, full of resource materials. Keith can be contacted by email at keith@epworth-pc.org or by phone at (334) 298-3186 or (334) 448-4715.

This month's thoughts from Reverend C. Michael McKnight, Pastor: Getting The Job Done Eddie Stankey was a hard playing second baseman with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves, and the New York Giants. Most people remember him by his “give it everything” attitude when playing. Branch Rickey, general manager of the Dodgers, once said of Stankey, “he can’t run, he can’t hit, and he can’t throw, but if there is a way to beat you, he’ll find it.” Moses is the Stankey of the Old Testament. He didn’t seem to be especially talented in any particular area but he always got the job done. As he accepted the call to lead the Hebrews out of bondage in Egypt, he went through a list of “why I can’t do it’s.” But God had something else in mind and would never accept Moses excuses. And we know how great Moses went on to be in the history of the Hebrew children. Why am I writing to you about Moses and Stankey? Just to say that as we begin this new year, it would be easy for all of us to find some excuse for not being able to do what God has called us to do as a church. But most of our excuses won’t hold up. We have been equipped to do the work of the church.(2 Timothy 3:17). We have the wonderful opportunity to make a difference for Christ in this congregation, community, and the world. There is no greater call than the call to be a servant for Him. As you make your New Year’s resolutions, make sure that at the very top of the list you place “being a worker in the church.” Remember, it is not about how much talent you have, but about how much God has and will invest in you to do the job to which He has called you. 2006 will be a great year for Epworth as we unite in our desire to be a servant people. That’s the history of this congregation and I know that it will continue through you. Thank you for your commitment to Christ and one another and let us work as never before in 2006 to fulfill God’s purpose for Epworth in Phenix City. I’ll see you on Sunday as we equip ourselves even more to do the work of the church. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with you. There’s nothing I enjoy more!
