BUSH DISASTER, 1670/100,000, Dead, 2005, 65"h x 2"w x 36"l.
"BUSH DISASTER,1670/100,000" (2005) is my sculpture in remembrance of the 1670 American and 100,000 others dead in the Iraq "War on Terror." The top symbol ( K ) is Chinese for fire, the middle section represents the United States and the lower (K) with dashes above it is the water symbol. Whenever any object or name is placed between fire and water the combination represents disaster. The title, Bush Disaster 1670/100,000 is the time frame when the work was finished, June 2005. At that time, 1670 American troops had died. Although the United States Department of Defense refuses to estimate "War on Terror" deaths in Iraq, the number of 100,000 war related deaths of all types was taken from a British estimate. The work is constructed from found steel objects hand formed and welded together. *$8,000.00 * 90% of the profits from this sale will be donated to organizations which support the families of fallen American service people who died in this conflict in Iraq.
YEAR OF THE TIGER 1998, 72"h x 30"w x 102"l.
"THE YEAR OF THE TIGER" (1998), is my sculpture in celebration of the Chinese Tiger Year,1998. The work is constructed from found steel objects hand formed and welded together. $24,000.00
This is my 33nd. year of making sculpture. My sculptures are three dimensional steel drawings. I began to make sculpture in 1975 in a Cass Corridor studio in Detroit, Michigan. The first works were created from discarded motorcycle parts and salvaged steel. In late 1975, I began to electric weld my pieces together and still do. I choose to recycle metal from roadsides and scrap heaps because bringing new life to waste metal is tangential to my personal economic and social philosophies. I see this material as singularly beautiful and precious.
Out of reverence to the natural world, much of my work describes animal forms created with the mechanical refuse of the 20th century. Mankind has made visual representations of nature since the beginning of human culture as exemplified by cave drawings. It is the ongoing exploration of man's relationship to nature which created him; what he has created from nature; and the resulting impact on both. This is the link, where my work begins: our earliest and closest bond, mother nature and mankind's effect upon her.
In my pieces, my objective is to create an emotional attachment between the viewer and these steel objects through the suggestion of motion. I strive to project some of nature's qualities and cause the viewer to suspend the fact of seeing just abstract steel objects welded together.
