African Soul

In a clear sky
sun spirit creeps up over the edge
for another journey with the earth.

A new day is born.

A painted priest shakes his shaker
and invites a childbearing woman,
three moon cycles deep,
into trance.

Near a cave,
he places his hands on her womb
and chants the sounds
echoed from the ancestors.

Summoning the unborn soul within her, he asks,
"Why are you here and what do you need?"

Using the woman's body and tongue
the soul expresses reveals why it is coming.

A name is then chosen
by the elders of the community
for the soul,
that embodies
it's life mission and gifts
it has to offer.

During the soul's journey with the earth
this name will resonate like sweet music
and remind why it is here each time
that it is called.

And through every trial the soul faces,
it will be carried on the back of the tribe
until it's last day with the earth
to be triumphantly delivered back.

Back into the great unknown,

   ...into a new day.
