Magickal Names

Most Witches choose to bestow upon themselves Magickal names. This is neither requisite or limited to one name. Witches often have at least two names, one they use in public gatherings or circles and one that is known only to the Witch and the gods. It is not absolutely necessary to have a Magickal name, nor would you be limited to one or two. The entire purpose is to identify more closely with the gods and with your new self as a Witch.
I was lucky in that I “found” my Magickal name shortly after my conversion to Wicca (yes, I only have one and it is very public). Shortly after I had dedicated myself to the Goddess and God, the thought of a new name ran through my mind. I didn’t want to think about it though. I wanted it to come naturally, perhaps through meditation. I had bought a set of Druid Animal Cards the year before I found Wicca and I used them frequently and, even before finding the God and Goddess, forged a strong bond with the animals through constant contact with them. One day, as I sat before the cards, in a pseudo-circle, I picked up the book that came with the set and let it fall open. It opend to the page of the Wren, the bird that shows the beauty in all life and all things. I knew as soon as I found that page, that I would take that as a name. In Gaelic, it is drui-en. I added an “a” to make it numerologically compatible with my birthdate, making it Drui Aen. I felt an immediate connection with it, which is what you should feel with any name you choose. Don’t pick something because it simply sounds nice or because you think it sounds “Witchy.” But, please, by all means, if you feel strongly connected to Merlin or Morgain or Morgan or Dragon or whatnot, take it and really make it yours.
My personal feeling is that, as soon as you have found *your* name, bring it before the gods. Sit before them, in Circle, and present yourself to them entirely. Invite the God and Goddess, the guardians of the elements, and if you chose a name after and animal or deity, invite them as well. This is truly a time to become your new self, take on a new life in dedication to the gods. A naming ritual is often performed in conjunction with a dedication ceremony, which makes sense. If you prefer to carry them out separately, do so. I did. As always, it’s whatever floats yer boat. Best of luck, and Blessed Be.

Ok, think I got it. Back to Wicca.
Got this topic covered, let's go home.
