Terms To Know

DECOCTION: Place one ounce of herb in one pint of water. Make certain that roots are put in to boil before leaves. Once the water has come to a boil, simmer for about 30 minutes covered, then leave to cool completely. Strain and use as directed.

INFUSION: The original form of a potion, an infusion is not unlike a tea in quality. Pour boiling water over the herb in the proportions of one ounce herb to one pint water (although you may need much less for herbs that infuse quickly in water). Steep for fifteen to thirty minutes until a tea is formed. Use as directed.

MACERATE: To steep an herb in fat, such as done with salve and ointments. Best oils to use are almond and sesame. Warm one cup of oil over a low flame and place one-half ounce herbs wrapped in cheesecloth to soak. Continue until the herbs have lost their color and the oil is rich with their scent.

OINTMENT: A fatty substance such as lard to which herbs are added. Choose herbs according to the effect you desire, or enchant them, or both. For healing ointments, choose according to physical ailment. Three teaspoon of herb to one cup of fat, steeped and heated several times should prove very nice. Vegetable shortening will work very well, especially almond and saffron. All ointments should be kept cool and in air tight containers for best results. For magic, ointments work best when applied to pulse points or chakras.

POULTICE: A portion of herbs placed in an equal amount of boiling water to steep. Once herbs have been fully dampened, strain the water and place the herbs in gauze or cheesecloth applied directly to the affected area. This can be a little messy, so have a towel handy. It works fairly well, especially for rashes and other mild skin disorders.

TINCTURE: For ounces of herb steeped in eight ounces of alcohol for about two weeks gives a reasonable tincture. The bottle should be sealed and left in a dark area, and the liquid strained when the tincture is ready.

WASH: A tea or infusion meant only for external use. A mild form of a wash would be 1/4 ounce of herb to one pint of boiling water, steeped until lukewqrm, then applied.

THE SUN

Herbs of the Sun give our inner self a sense of future. They will help us to better realize our goals. In prognostics they are said to heal the sides of the body, the right eye of men, the left eye of women (which may be sexist and needs exploring on a personal level), and the back.

Solar herbs are excellent for those who have trouble with their self-image, and who suffer illness because they are afraid of dealing with the public. Herbs of the Sun will build self-confidence and an ability to complete one's goals. Remedially they also govern the spleen, thyroid, spine and the vital fluids of the body.

For those of us who have trouble understanding our place in the world, these herbs will help us to realize how we are one of many, and know that there is divine work. It helps the individual to see his or her life as being part of a large plan in which each person is essential to the harmony of the universe. These herbs help to strengthen the ego. They are often associated with Christ and other Sun Gods, helping us to be strong in our purpose, and good in our intent. THese are recommended for depression, inferiority complexes, and fear of the world around. They help us to be generous with our love and our energy, and seeing all, even those of whom we disapprove, as part of life, each essential and capable of choice.

For those in need of ambition, independence, and the ability to take charge, solar herbs should be taken with the sunrise. These are the herbs which help us to get in touch with the self, and to find that process joyful. Even though we may be fault-finding when examining the self, we know that growth is a life-long process, and we should see the self compassionately as evolving gradually toward perfection. We may be joyful creatures, if we view ourselves as becoming better and better.

THE MOON

These herbs are for emotions and instincts. They help us to realize our ability to love. Their energy is like divine ecstasy. For the prognostician, these herbs remedially govern the uterus and ovaries, the breasts, the stomach and parts of the brainn, and the esophagus. They are often used to treat coughs and colds.

These herbs work with the subconscious mind, and are of value for those who work to develop their intuition. They may help us to understand our childhood, even those parts which we hated, yet are essential to our health and maturity as adults. Thus, we are better able to understand those feelings which cause fear and inhibit our ability to love and be loved.

They bring a higher degree of sensitivity, and increase the childlike wonder of imagination. They are excellent for diseases caused by fear of change or lack of imagination. They are good for those whose limited vision causes stress and inflexibility.

These herbs help us to flow with the rhythm of life about us, as the ocean and earth flow with the tides of the Moon. They are good for soothing domestic troubles, and for the woman who serves a family and is not appreciated.

MERCURY

These herbs have been associated with the brain, nervous system, respiratory system, throat, nerve sensations, defects of speech, memory, and of the tongue. They are essential for those who have difficulty in thinking or communicating. Some say the Mercurial planets govern the bowels (particularly for Virgos), lungs and hands (particularly for Geminis).

The herbs of Mercury will have an effect upon the intellectual processes, such as those of thinking, logic, reasoning, and conclusion-reaching. Regular use of these herbs makes the process more facile, keeping the mind sharp and alert. This is particularly effective when working on books or a particular project, but not for prolonged use, for then they lose their effectiveness.

For those who pursue spiritual paths, these herbs help one to understand the balance of conscious and subconscious, and should be taken in equal mixtures with solar and lunar herbs. This brings to the person a sense of integration, and an ability to flow with the meaning of life.

For the magickal practitioner, these herbs do well to be balanced with lunar herbs or Uranian herbs, thus enabling the self to bring forth the ideas and answers found through intuition. Usually, one of the stumbling blocks in this process is learning to translate intuitive feelings into conscious words. In ritual use, the power of the word is learned, and also the value of holding true to the words we have given.

VENUS

These herbs are highly recommended for those sullen and unhappy, particularly when those states of distress are caused by a lack of social grace. They will make us feel more attractive, and freer in giving a sense of joy. They are for persons desiring to be more outgoing and social. They give us a sense of self-comfort which leaves us more open (yet safely) to the vibrations of others.

Herbs of Venus are recommended more in healing for young people than for old, but are not recommended for anyone when the ailment is caused by love. In that case herbs of Jupiter are the best, for Venus will only increase the longing, whereas Jupiter will allow us to see other options.

These herbs have remedial associations with the blood, kidneys and urinary system, the tactile nerves, complexion, throat and skin. Many ailments of the reproductive system are connected with Venus.

These herbs work to refine our sensory perception and aesthetics. They often have with them energy which increases our ability to attract those we desire. They are best used in this manner to attract imagery such as sought by artists, musicians, and others involved in the creative arts. They affect our sense of taste and value judgement of beauty.

They also increase psychic perception, opening our awareness to many other senses. They have been used successfully for those who work on the astral planes.

MARS

These herbs are used to heal muscle strain, external sex organs, and for force and vitality. They add a desire for momentum to one's life, and are used to cure lethargy, although the mixture should include other herbs to bring a sense of direction and focus, as well.

These herbs are very basic, as they relate to the sexual organs, and as they affect the inner person, for they contain energy similar to that of survival. They release the instinctive quality of the Moon in order to preserve the self.

If one desires a great tonic, try herbs of the Sun with herbs of Mars. Martial herbs always impart a strong energy, and when combined with those of the Sun, it is more focused and directed. It is easier for the self to manifest the energy to accomplish goals and achieve desires.

Magickally, Martial herbs relate to manifestation, by learning how to be the 'divine' and see magick occur on the physical planes. Hurley tells us that for powerful manifestation, mix herbs of Mars, the Moon, and Mercury.

The herbs of Mars give us more activity, and a sense of being with other active people. They are recommended for those suffering from apathy, a sense of uselessness, boredom, wastefulness, and are most useful for athletes and those whose jobs require physical exertion.

JUPITER

These are the natural benefactors of all the herbs, having an innate sense of bringing into our lives just what we need. (Also needed is the awareness to perceive these opportunityies and benefits.) Remedially, they rule the liver, blood (along with Venus), vitality, attitudes, the manufacture of adrenalin, and fats. Jovian herbs (herbs of Jupiter) are good for those desiring growth.

Taking these herbs as a tonic brings an understanding of how the individual relates to the 'system' and to make use of it for personal advantage without violating ethics. They are excellent for those who pursue the study of ritual, for they provide a conscious link between the microcosm of the Circle and the macrocosm of the Universe, with understanding of how they are both part of the perfect balance.

Herbs of Jupiter are said to give tact, and are excellent for office managers, diplomats, and any professional who must give knowledge and advice to people.

These herbs are recommended for those unable to give of the self, or who go through emotional upheaval on occasions of gift-giving. They allow people to both give and receive with good feelings and an understanding of karma.

For those trained in serious magickal workings, I would highly recommend reading Hurley's 'Herbal Alchemy', in which he gives several planetary formulae for Jovian herb mixtures.

SATURN

These herbs deal with structure. Remedially, this means the skeletal system, ligaments, teeth, and possibly hearing and the gall bladder. Esoterically, their energy proves a source of grounding, or bringing one's feet back to earth. They will settle our attitudes, making us more willing to be stable, and are recommended for those given to excessive daydreams and who get lost in their flights of fancy.

These herbs balance karma, helping us to understand cause and effect, and showing us how to bring discipline into our lives to accomplish goals that will give us increased freedom. They are recommended for those unable to complete projects, and for those who are unable to translate ideas into manifestations and action.

Elixirs made of Saturnian herbs help us to manifest our magick on the earth, and when mixed with Mercurial herbs give us a sense of tradition, as handed down through mysteries, magick, and religion.

Working with Saturn must be done with caution. These herbs can be used to induce change when a person is too caught in a rut, but it will involve letting go of much of the past, until dependency upon the past is alleviated. Only then will the person be free, and able to take both from the future and past to achieve a new and better life.

URANUS

These herbs govern the nervous system, many areas of the brain, and nerve impulses. They are used for those suffering from agitation, a too inflexible attitude, and a need for mental freedom.

Working with these herbs brings inspiration and an ability to follow one's feelings in trying new endeavors. They bring a lighter approach to life, and are useful in alleviating depression.

Magickally, they allow us to trust our impulses, and to follow divine insight. They are good in learning to work with symbols, and to trust initiatory paths. They work with the child within, resurrecting those delightful aspects of one's self.

They may be used when one's thinking is stuck, going round and round in the same old circle, unable to break old mental patterns. They are good for relationships that have become based upon habit and need an injection of new vitality, and work well followed by herbs which will stimulate sexual enjoyment.

NEPTUNE

These herbs should work well with the kidneys and systems which pass fluids within the body. In some ways they work in similar fashion to those of Venus. They also rule the spinal canal and the parathyroid.

For those who have a limited sense of vision, Neptunian herbs open the mind to a greater sense of vision, in which we may find avenues to escape destructive boredom. They bring an ability to dream, both when asleep, and awake. They increase creative imaginative processes, and are the herbs of artists seeking new ideas. They lead to the visions, and other herbs will enable one to put them into manifestation.

Herbs of Neptune have been used to enhance astral travel, but may only do so when reality is held in one's mind at the same time, for they can lead to dependency. They are best used as a key, learning as one flows through the astral realms, but only for brief periods at a time, for that form of psychic travel is only of value when it can be experienced independently of physical assistance, including herbs.

PLUTO

These herbs affect our sexual drive and desire to procreate. They work upon our deepest senses of motivation, based upon childhood training and influences, and can have a real and profound effect upon our lives, although the changes which will manifest do so slowly.

They affect our understanding of the need to preserve life, not self preservation, as with Mars, for herbs of Pluto relate to generations. Thus, they help to understand racial and cultural preservation, and the reaching out to embrace humanity.

They are recommended for those who have lost sexual desire and drive, and for those who feel frustration when working with groups of people. Remedially, they are used to stimulate sexual drive, and to increase procreation.
