A Musing
by Evil Doug

My muse is a tacky harlot,
Given to bestiality
And very strong drink.
Her keen eyes a shade of scarlet.
Slothfulness is her specialty,
But sleeps ne'er a wink.

She gorges herself upon truth,
Swallowing it whole as a snake.
Her belly bulges,
She belches her doctrine uncouth.
For my creativity's sake,
My skull she purges.

Then come the pains of labor wild.
For timely death she fiercely pines.
A newborn girl cries-
'Tis Truth's illegitimate child.
And though I know she is not mine,
She does have my eyes.

Her tasks now done, the child awake,
My muse then goes back to her part
Time job at Shoney's.

Amputation: A Love Poem
By Evil Doug

In mad prattles do I hear tales
Of ruptured souls spilling entrails
On cold concrete and woman-wails
Immortalized by deaf dumb bards.
Just as my sinful foremothers
Broke their vows of love to others,
I choose now, if given druthers,
To hew my arm in same regards.

My arm has never given strife,
But served with goodness throughout life.
Yet, now I must unloose my knife
And saw sinews with ill intent.
Now I sever a limb my own.
From it had I no malice known.
Hear the grinding, I've cleared the bone!
And on the slab my arm then went.

Though the bleeding was quite profuse,
I purposed now to make excuse
Of why my arm had lost its use.
But my efforts were all in vain.
"I like you arm, as just a friend.
It's time, I think, our ties must end.
Just give it time, I'm sure you'll mend.
After all, I'm the one in pain."

"It's for your good I'm freeing you,
And deep inside, you know it's true,
Although you're dying, pale and blue
With no heart now your blood to pump.
You need not worry about me.
I have another arm, you see.
My memory of you shall be
My bloody reeking shoulder stump."

So now, my dear, do you surmise
My reasons giv'n to be unwise?
Then hearken back to your same lies!
Dear child, you're not very clever.
So just as my severed arm gave
To me before it felt the grave,
I give you the one-fingered wave!
My dear, may you burn forever.

A Child's Loss
by Evil Doug

The Dark Jester
Took my friends
Early. Family, too.
Doors opened-
Graves closed
Classmate and Kin alike,
Eternally Gone.

The Gamesmaster
Plays bitter Sport.
His toy chest is well stocked:
Remorse, Guilt, Sorrow.
He took
Away my
Childhood joy.

What's left for
This broken child?
Scattered plastic
Soldiers-
Crushed by an
Unfeeling boot;
A model plane
Consumed in
The fireplace,
And a rag doll
With a
Machette
Stabbed through
It's head

Not Bitter
by Evil Doug

Not Bitter at all.
I know you're too good for me.
I don't deserve love.

Let's just be friends!
Lord, deliver me
From Fools, Hicks,
And Charmers.
I can't be faded.

Hickory dickory dock;
Your new boyfriend's as dumb as a rock!
He's the rebellious kind
So someday he'll do time.
He'll be popular on his cell block!

Let's just be friends!
Lord, deliver me
From Fools, Hicks,
And Charmers.
I can't be faded.

I would have given
My life for your own.
Sure as the skies are above.
You tore out my soul,
Thrust it on the coals,
Said, "It was all out of love."

Let's just be friends!
Lord, deliver me
From Fools, Hicks,
And Charmers.
I can't be faded.

You lied,
It plunged me
Into the void
No matter. Besides,
I'm just a guy.
What do guys know about
Love?

Loose Tooth - Age 10

by Evil Doug

Bare feet on linoleum
Sun struggling through drapes,
Me at the sink Monday morn
With brush in sleepy hand.

Applying mint paste to white bristles
I wiggle my tooth with my tongue,
Twisting and twirling on its lone
Nerve. I brush.

Minty turns to salty, cool to warm.
I spit red and green on the
Cold white porcelain and
Fish from my frothy mouth
My pallid bicuspid.
A nickel under my pillow tomorrow?

Turn on the tap with water rush.
Bloodpaste expectorate swirls
Counterclockwise down drainwards.
Backwards swirl, backwards swirl…

Backwards - swirl?
I cast open the drapes
And behold the Outback beyond.

"Mom? Did you spirit
us away to Australia
again using your darkmagic?"
She stood now in the doorway.
"Well, did you?"
She shrugs, smiles, and
Rolls her eyes. "Maybe…"

Far off, a solitary
didgeridoo bemoans
My headless pearly white.
