I have a twin soul. Do you want me to tell you that it is a lover? My best friend? My mother, my brother, my father? It is not. It is my cat. Her name is Allis, and in her eyes, I see the missing pieces of myself. Laugh, if you will, but I tell you the truth as I see it. She’s my everything. I have had other cats in my life (Oh, adorable beings!), but none that I understood as profoundly as I do her. None that I could look at, smile, and nod as if she had spoken to me with her heart. She is my princess, my empress. My mother, my sister, my daughter. When she and I take a walk alone at night, I sneak in her footsteps as if we were two shadows that -belong- together. She lets me see the world through her eyes. How fascinating a leaf can be when the wind stirs it to whispers! When it flutters across the ground, insecurely, we stalk towards it, and sniff the air in curiosity. When the magpies cry out a warning we both flinch, look at them, and then meet each other’s eyes. And we know what we’re thinking - the fools! How can they think they might protect themselves against a master huntress? |
