Cindy sat down with a tired sigh. A cardboard box perched on her knees,
one of many she had carried down from the attic of her grandparents place.
A sad smile played upon her lips, she had so many happy memories
of long summers spent playing in the yard or upon the porch.
And the happy and cozy holidays spent around the big table in Grandma's
dining Room.
As Cindy reached up to brush the loose strand of auburn hair
that had fallen from her ponytail, the back of her hand touched an
object protruding from the box. Grasping the corner,
she pulled a small black and white photo. Gazing at the couple
in the picture, she thought they looked familiar.
A very handsome man, in a dark jacket, his eyes looking deeply
into the eyes of a beautiful woman, made even more beautiful
by the look of adoration she had for the man she gazed upon.
Cindy's heart thumped, for the picture of the woman looked vaguely like her,
yet she knew it was not.
She heard voices calling to load her box in the trailer so they
could get on the road. Standing she stuffed the picture in her
back pocket and clattered down the stairs.
In the flurry of who was riding with who and where everyone
was going to sit and where the first stop would be, she forgot
about the photo.
Riding along with her Mom and Grandma, listening to the talk of
the new house and the better weather, Cindy dozed off.
Stretching, Cindy realized the car had stopped, everyone was getting
out for a meal and a bit of a stretch, before the last leg
of the trip.
As everyone was taking their seats, Cindy watched her grandparents.
Grandpa, always so much the gentleman, and Grandma, so feminine
and such a lady. Grandpa helped Grandma into her seat and looked down
in her eyes, and at that very moment the photograph was remembered.
Cindy saw those same two young people peering at each other
with love and devotion.
Chills ran down Cindy's spine and tears sprung to her eyes and then
a warm smile curved her lips as she thought of a special surprise.
Cindy clung to her thoughts the rest of the journey and the next day as
they unloaded boxes and unpacked her grandparent's things,
she asked for the privilege of making up the bedroom for them.
She made up the bed, and hung the lace curtains, arranged all
the doilies and special knick knacks and family photos on the dresser.
She kissed her grandparents and took herself home; knowing how wonderful
and how long love can now last.
That night, as her grandparents readied themselves for bed, they pulled
down the comforter and lying on the pillows was a black and white photo
and a pink rose. They both smiled and Grandma wept a little
at the photo, then, Grandpa held her and kissed her with the
same passion and love now, as he had then.
