When I visited South Africa I came with certain preconceptions about the political and social conditions there. Upon arriving, I discovered a situation much more complex than I imagined. We talked about the atmosphere of violence and frustration. I also began to feel the incredible beauty of the land. Conflict seemed to be everywhere... Upon leaving I felt that I had come to know less about South Africa the more I learned. This difficult boundary between hope and ignorance seems to be at the root of my artistic investigations. And so my images express my own fixation on a certain state of confusion I felt in South Africa. I interpret "transmigration" as a particularly difficult state of consciousness (perhaps a limbo) between the security of understanding and the danger of misunderstanding....
