Since the beginning, travelers have taken rest and refreshment beside the road. Back in the glory days of Zen, a tea lady would stand in place of MickyDees for pilgrims, sages, and pretenders. Often deeply immersed in the Way, these women served up snacks to not only restore the body, but resuscitate the mind as well.

Even the great Diamond Shu found that roadside vendors like Iron Grindstone Ma did not hesitate "to sort out the sheep from the cud," but that's another story.
