:      modern art

"My grandfather Frank Lloyd Wright wore a red sash on his wedding night.
 That is glamour!"
(Anne Baxter)
"I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just
the length of it. I wanted to have lived the width of it as well."
(Diane Ackerman)

I dragged myself off to the National Modern Art Gallery. (I know, I know.... I hate Modern Art too....) My partner-in-crime was a certain Miss Torn Dream (she had her name legally changed in 1989). She knows Modern Art like a hockey player knows teeth:

This piece is called "Where were you when I needed beer?"
Well isn't that great! That's two things I hate about Modern Art right there: not serious enough and no respect. (I hate clowns.)

Those are undescriptions, ivica: Negative not Bilder.
Speak englisch. There are only about two and a half million Germans in the
Canadas.

You understand
mich well enough! This painting is called "one little person surrounded by many mad machines".
Why can't he just call it what it is: "An apple on an old chair"?

Why not bring in the viewer's images and the viewer's counter-title too? Interactive art! You call it Modern Art. Some call it Contemporary Art. You know there are....
Please...don't tell me there are 27 types of bananas, okay? Sure a lot of parallels are obvious and simple. But a real artist sweats a little over his work. You know the word work? My friend Milly the Waitress looks over a piece of art and if she figures the artist sweated over it (with plenty of talent)...only then does she pronounce it "art". Not just drag a dead cat over some sandpaper! Talent is an easy enough thing to recognize in the Western desert.

Don't tell that to Van Gogh. There are many different Motoren in our Kultur! That beer-one for instance emphasizes drugs in our world and the emptiness inside us somewhere.
I like that, now that you describe it further. I also like the Minimalist approach generally.

Die Minimal Art is a strong principle in Modern Art. Do you prefer Frank Lloyd Wright or Mies Van Der Rohe?
I like 'em both.

Like other arts, the history of modern art is fought over Das Ornament!
Decoration or deception?

In this sculpture the shape is just an "idea" like its colour or its atoms or its weight.... Die Rebellen of yesterday are the Old Masters of today.
Well, some are and some aren't....

Don't you want another Kultur commenting artistically on your Kultur?
Don't be so sure that it's my Kultur.

This one here I really like: pictures and words together in one painting. What is you Kultur?
I can have more than one, no? I can belong to the Italian culture AND to the Punk-Mystery Writers League AND to Al Bundy's No Ma'am Organization AND to The Bikers From Fat City AND to the local Golf Club AND to this pacifist right wing church AND to that Boston Tea Party. This is still a free country....I can carry as many (or as few) cultures as I like.

This wire-sculpture is: "Hey housewife!" Wire coloured like wooden beams with broken pieces of drywall here and there. Some art is not created for me or you to understand in our little world! Art's like a smile...you can take it many different ways (depending on what's in you). I like mine mit Finesse.
You mean: What's deep inside me is described by what kind of nice or weird art I like in the outside world? Hey, what the HELL is that thing?

"Where-and-who in Blue #6".
AND of course a lot of these cultures are in conflict! It's the nature of the beast.

Die Natur. Das System. Die Maschine.
Sounds like a title for your next piece!

A lot of these art-works act as a stimulus but the good ones usually have 2 intentions. An obvious one and the intended one. And the Dragon, der Drache, is the piece of art that is only the next little piece in the puzzle of your life. Add up all your art and there is your life!
A life of improvisation is a difficult art (or vice versa....).

This was done by a friend of mine. He died last year. His artifacts, writings, songs, tables, photos were spread throughout Fat City. He never told anyone...but he told himself. He knew he was an artist.... Who died on the day you were born ivica?
I don't remember.

"Sleep is the best meditation."
(Dalai Lama)
"They didn't want it good, they wanted it Wednesday."
(Robert Heinlein)

Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum (of Modern Art) was a real stinkeroo. Nice simple building idea...but what crap inside. The New York Museum of Modern Art was a poor simple building but the stuff inside was priceless...fantastic....  The National Art Gallery in Fat City is a great looking building (especially if you're in Emerald City with the heartless Tin Man and a nice government contract in your back pocket). But the Modern Art inside is a waste of time.

Just because it's modern, doesn't mean it's art....

"In Hollywood, the women are all peaches.
It makes one long for an apple occasionally."
(
Somerset Maugham)
