And The Fourth Beast Said ... Come and See

1990 33.5 x 53" ~ 84 x 132.5 cm Acrylic Paint on Canvas

The woodblock print, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" created by Albrecht Durer in 1498 is one of those haunting images which remained on some distant shelf of my memory for many years.

As a child my fantasy was to raise horses when I grew up. Well now I am raising three kids. Between my art, my husband, and my kids, there is no time left over for the horse fantasy. However I do think the horse is an exquisite beast and I love to paint it.

The four horsemen of the apocalypse, or in my case the four horses of the apocalypse, are a biblical representation of the worst horrors which can befall man. A white horse represents war, a red horse represents famine, a dark horse represents pestilence and a pale horse represents death. It is interesting to think that from the beginning of recorded history to the present these horrors have not really changed.
