Greek Pigeons
2004 11.25 x 15" ~ 28.5 x 38 cm Hand Pulled Serigraph Print (18 Stencils)Edition 60In December of 2002 I took part in a three person Exhibition at the Omma Center for Contemporary art in Greece. It took several months of really intense work to get ready for the show, but getting there was the real adventure…
It was a full days drive by car to get from our home in Timmins to my brothers house near the Toronto airport. Part way down we (my husband Bruce and I), lost our breaks. Luckily we managed to get to a garage 15 minutes before they closed for the night and they kindly agreed to keep working till our car was fixed. The next day we decided to go for a walk in the woods, since we would be sitting on the plane for about 20 hours. When we came to a cross road, I said, “I think this is the way we go.” Bruce said with manly confidence, “No no, this is the way back.” After wandering around lost for almost an hour we finally found someone who pointed us in the right direction. We got to my brother’s house about 20 minutes before we had to leave for the airport. After a long plane ride we arrived in Athens 1 hour and 20 minutes late. Because we were changing international airlines to get to Crete we had to pick up our luggage and go through customs again. Because the plane was late we only had 35 minutes to do this. We literally ran between the terminals. I got through customs and ran up to the line that was already boarding the plane. As I saw myself getting closer and closer to the front of the line I looked around frantically for Bruce. Finally I picked up my bags and ran back to customs counter. “What are you doing?” I said to Bruce nearly hysterical. “Well,” he said remarkably calmly, “The customs agent wants to look through my bag.” I turned to the customs agent. “Do you want to look through his bag?” I said, not calmly. “Yes I do.” He said, although he looked uncertain. “Fine!” I said, and in about 7 seconds I had pulled out the contents of the entire bag out and spread it on the counter. The customs agent blinked at me, shook his head, and said, “Go.”
When I finally had a chance to catch my breath a couple of days later, I noticed pigeons flitting about the amazing ancient ruins, and I thought I could still be in Saint John New Brunswick, (where I grew up), because the pigeons look just the same.
