The Ultimate Quarter Mile Run
2008 6 x 18.5" ~ 15.5 x 46.5 cm Hand Pulled Serigraph ~ 22 StencilsEdition 58 ~ Artist Proofs 6These are the 5 fastest land animals in the world over the quarter mile distance, the cheetah, the pronghorn, in a tie for third the wildebeest and the Thompson’s gazelle, and finally, the quarter horse. Of the group however, it is the pronghorn which really blows me away with its abilities. Just a tiny bit behind the cheetah in speed, suddenly at the quarter mile pole, things change dramatically. The cheetah must have caught its prey by this point, or it gives up the chase because it has to catch its breath. The quarter horse, so named for its speed over the ¼ mile distance, can keep running, but not at its top speed. The pronghorn, can maintain the top speed of the quarter horse a four mile distance!
The pronghorn is a North American animal, sometimes mistakenly called an antelope. The pronghorn can easily out run any land animal in the world past the quarter mile pole. It’s vision is also remarkable, to see as well as a pronghorn a human would have to hold up a pair of binoculars with 7 times magnification. This little known super athlete of the animal world, has no living relatives, it absolutely amazes me.
