It Rains Today, June 7, 2003

It rains. It rains. Our summer sky is gray. Il pleut, il pleut. L'orage obscurcit la baie. Il pleut, il pleut, Venus is booed in France. It rains and rains, Sosa don't stand a chance. Il pleut, Il pleut. Hamas desire la guerre. Il pleut. Il pleut, life just isn't fair. La vie est deregle. We are all sad today.

Saturday Drive on Country Roads

Bright spring sunshine on a backroad’s shortcut at mid-morning; slow route past book fairs, rummage sales, a stray tennis ball galloping across the road until it lands safely in a patch of dandelions on a green suburban lawn. The cows are eating breakfast against a country pattern of pastel-colored plants. Mad-cow and foot-and-mouth disease worries scurry across my brow, then fly across the Atlantic. I fill my lungs with American air and smile, as hay-scented wind gently grazes my face.

Adesso means Now

Boarded windows whisper “Open,”
as a tentative push upon the door
unfolds the drama of the new beauty salon.
Adesso means now.

A tired woman with tri-color hair;
Beneath jeweled chandeliers, upon
Victorian stuffed chair,
looks up and smiles encouragingly.

I wonder how much it will cost
for a shampoo and a style, a cut and a frost?
The windows are boarded and it’s not quite done.
But Adesso means now, and my hair’s just not fun.

Fine wooden antique cases house the shampoo,
Rolling Stones and Glamour in the sitting room.
Greek doric columns’ gold leaf trim.
A quick cut and style will do it for him.

Half wall mirrors and leather chairs.
A plate for calling cards?
or is that the receptionist there?
Adesso means now; says the furniture d’or,
“Lighten up and get the style du jour”
Is this place really a metaphor?

The windows are boarded
and it’s not quite done,
but my hair’s a mess and
I’m ready for some fun.

Addesso means now.

Orange pieces of dawn invitations sliced by sun-rays ask what path today? Contemplate day's break. Coffee, birdsong, dew on lawn. Inhale the morning!
