This Queen, as befits her suit, frequently appears to fall into the role of the archetypal caregiver. Sensitive and empathetic, she tends to be very well attuned to the needs of others, frequently through non-verbal cues as much as anything else. As such, there may be a strong psychic component to the make up of this character, which will certainly add to her reputation for possessing mysterious, intuitive capacities. The Queen of Cups tends to be perceptive, meaning that she may quickly pick up on the innate strengths and weaknesses of others. In her most positive manifestation, the Queen of Cups may emerge as a gifted healer or medium, and as a nurturer, the kind of woman who tends to mother everyone; negatively, she may deploy her perceptive skills into manipulation of the deepest vulnerabilities of those closest to her.
The Queen of Cups does tend to live for - and frequently through - others. She may appear to be selfless in her devotion to her loved ones, but this devotion may often be her way of vicariously satisfying her own buried needs. The Chalice pack suggests that this character, more than the other queens, may frequently fall into many of the nurturing traps expressed by certain post-feminist therapies. The Queen of Cups may be prone to patterns of co-dependency within relationships (much depends again on whether or not that cup, as with all cups, is full or empty!). Her own neediness may make her particularly prone to depression in the face of loss - as in, for example, the scenario of the empty nest syndrome. The Queen of Cups can also always benefit from better communication skills, where others do not possess her "mind-reading" talents - this character may otherwise be a formidable sulk or grudgebearer.
While frequently being very talented herself, her powerful emotional depths may, for instance, find release through music and poetry - the Queen of Cups may be expert at drawing on the talents of others. The Queen of Wands - as we shall see - also possesses this capacity to some degree, but this Queen tends to be more gentle about it.
